Allen you are right the child was not chasing candy but did fall from the float. The saddest part is that her father was driving the vehicle pulling the float.

I will have to agree with this. I don't know if you can find carnival people that don't fit that mold though. It seems as if they have always looked and acted that way even when I was a kid. The rides are as old as they get and when I see those kids get on some I have to wonder if they will be alive when they come off. Surely there is another company that has a little bit newer of rides and maybe a little cleaner looking people.
I was just wondering if anyone attended the fair at the south county mall ? That is the company that Arnold needs for there Arnold Days , new rides and a bunch of them, clean looking workers with matching uniforms.and an all around clean atmosphere ,they had kiddy rides and rides for big kids, All that said I have never had to hire a carnival for a town fair so I am completely ignorant on the subject, but Im sure that someone out there must work or have access to someone in city hall , maybe to let them know that there are other companys out there , because with the companys they have been hiring ,I would think that they dont have a clue, now Im not trying to slam anybody ,but Arnold has spent years trying to rid themselves of this image ,and now that it is basically gone ,why does city hall continually try to bring it back ,think about all that has been done here with the commons ,all the improvements ,were probably lucky that some of these new businesses havent been to the park During Arnold days with there kids, they would probably run and find a town that thought a little bit more of there people,

I know of that family and the child fromKirkwood. I think someone was suppose to put a hand rail of some sort up around the float and they ran out of time or just didn't, very sad . the child I believe fell from the float and was ran over, just so you know she wasn't from the crowd chasing candy.
Allen,

I knew the kid was not chasing candy but if I can remember right that is when all the new parade rules started coming out. That was a very tragic thing that happened to that child and a freak accident at that but I think people need to stop and think before they create a bunch of new rules. I think parade people felt that kids would be running out in the street to get the candy and may would get to close to the floats and get ran over.

I don't think getting one of those darlings hit in the head by flying candy was the issue. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time in my life to be wrong. ha I hate to admit that.:) I say let the candy fly and let the parents be the ones to judge if their child can chase it.

sbt,

What you are talking about is "common sense". It is not a very common thing down here in Arnold. It was taught in school to a certain extent until the book knowledge approach took over. Some people are just too old or too naive to remember it. Others were asleep in class that day.

In other words, well put and I whole-heartedly agree with you.:)

Well put... I couldn't agree more...parade candy is as american as apple pie. Kids don't go there just to catch a glimpse of the grand marshall lol

Hey, Sherry, imagine if Amato or Powell were the grand marshall. You think that would give the kids nightmares for years to come?

It happened at Webster Groves...child fell off a float and was run over.
For safety of the children...please no throwing of candy......IF the parents would contrl their children, then maybe it be ok!

As far as the rides go......each of you would be shocked at the cost to get the carney's in here....the one's in south county you spoke of were contacted but Arnold Days was not big enough of an event. Actually last year there WERE new rides; the carney's have to wear khakis and nice shirts; they can no longer bathe in the lake (HA!) and the search continues.
IF a worker is learing at someone let the police know....

Again I have to say I think it was a freak accident and you should not punish everything in life based on a one time thing. I mean seriously kids get hit by cars every day. Do we tell kids not to walk outside anymore? Some people get struck by lighting do we stay inside every time it storms? Leave it up to the parents to decide. I personally am sick of seeing politicians being the main character in all the parades. Spend some time and get some real attractions.

As far as the rides go. I was there last year and noticed nothing clean about those folks. Did you happen to see the little cars for the little kids?
They had to have been around since the 1960's. Sooo very old they were rusty. What if my little darling would have got cut on one of those rusty junker cars and had to go to the hospital. Should the carnival rides be ban then also?

It has nothing to do with Arnold Days and the committee. I was just stating my opinion vs yours. Is there a problem with that? I really could careless what you and your committees do for Arnold days. My opinion is let the candy fly for the kids. Yours is let the little ones sit on the side and watch the politicians walk by. No need to get your underwear or panties in a wad dude or dudette.

While your on your planning team you might want to consider telling the chopper cops to slow down a bit. If one of those darlings would happen to dart away from their parents they would smash them like a bug. Then what no cops for the parade I suppose.

sad but true your right it was a freak accident. Could a hand rail have prevented it? Who knows.
All the rest of the kids in america should not be punished because of one accident. Let it fly

I would have no problem with volunteering , but Im sure that there are people that I am already paying to do the work, but if they are incapable of doing the work or just plain dont care, I will gladly come in and volunteer, and Im sure many others would too, some of us are tired of catching the after effects of our town leaders taking a giant dump on us,because of sheer laziness

Don't forget the police department riding around in golf carts....booths are manned by their respective exhibitors, carny games/rides manned by carny people. Wildcat, people are allowed to speak their mind. You may call it crap, if you like, but others will not stop. You'll be better off if you grow thicker skin and get used to it.

I have seen MANY City officials acting in control of some areas along the parade route myself. What about good little Mr. Crisler telling the police to track down the fellow putting hand outs on cars? Was he there to enjoy the day or throw his power around. What about Mr. Cooley driving his cart in the parade and God forbid breaking the rules and throwing candy. What would have happened if he would have hit a precious little angel in the head with that candy? Oh, lets not forget Mr. Amato and Ms. Dieckman walking around the fair grounds with their head's held high in the air like their shit didn't stink during those days. They were all there for a reason Wildcat. As Mr. Sweeney once said to someone you can leave your head in the sand I suppose and the City would be better off but if you pull it out you'll see the City is heavily involved. Again just stating my opinion. You don't have to agree.

All that was said was that the parade rules are on the city website and that throwing candy was not allowed. Nobody was blaming the city.

Nobody bashed the city. Re iterating no candy throwing so the "officials" don't do it again, like last year. Just letting people know the parade rules are on the website, what the h-e-double hockey sticks is wrong with that? Do you have a little persecution complex? By the way that info is on the Parks and Rec page not on the City of Arnold main page.
