Yes, it is legal - maybe not right, but still legal. They could very possibly be answering a call and they do not have to have their lights or siren on. By the way, I didn't think anybody went 55 on 5S.

i normally go about 60-62 on 5 and 5s and never got pulled over for it, and i've driven by cops who are def looking for speeders...just use your judgement, if your going way faster then everyone else you'll be the first to get pulled over, they could technically pull you over for 56, because that is 1 mile and hour over the speed limit which is against the law.

Uh I drive like a granny. I do go 55 on rte. 5s. Lol thought i'd add that. They usually don't bother you until about 10 miles over the speed limit. So stick to 63-64 you'll be all set.

I usually stay around 65 to 67 and have passed troopers with their radar on and never been stopped. I've been driving for over 45 years and, knock on wood (as I knock on my head-LOL), I've never gotten a ticket.

You've heard of the citizen's arrest, right? Next time it happens, chase down the offender and exercise your rights to execute a citizen's arrest.

yeahh wrote: <quoted text> and wheres your radar gun to prove he was speeding huh? Speed, position and direction at any given point in time are recorded on the patrol car's GPS unit. State police cruisers are all equipped with GPS units (as are the vast majority of municipal police vehicles in the U.S.) In the case of the NYS state police data from the GPS units is downloaded onto a central state police server once a week (minimum per NYSP regulations), and it is stored for years. So, when you pull over a state police cruiser at 4:03 p.m. the vehicle's speed will be recorded and readily introduced as evidence when the cop is in court to answer speeding charges from your citizen's arrest. The police know they are vulnerable to citizen's arrest, and the GPS data will damn them if they are speeding as they always do. That's why they discourage citizen's arrest. Don't fall for it. You as a citizen have every right and legal protection to arrest any police officer on suspicion or wrongdoing by the powers statutorily accorded to you under citizens arrest statutes.

As was stated earlier, troopers/cops do not have to have their lights or siren on when they are responding to a call. When they whiz by you, there is a very good chance that they are on their way to a legitimate call. If you tried to charge them with a citizen's arrest, they'd laugh in your face.

Pay Back Is A Bitch

My story A few years ago I was up here.I stopped in a store for cigs. There was a cop in the store. He pissed me off because he kept following me around the store.Checking out at the counter.I asked the clerk in ear shot of the cop.How long the cop had been in the store and made a comment. That he should be on te street catching bad guys.I left the store, went down the street.Stopped in a vacant parking lot.To light up a cigarette and take a drink from a soda I had also bought. The cop that was in the store had followed me to this parking lot.Came up behind me and blew his horn. For me to move out of the way.The parking lot was huge and had plenty of room for this cop to go around me.But he made me move because he was mad at me for saying what I did in the store.I moved my car and he passed me and sat in his car on the other side of this parking lot.I went up to him.Asked him why he had me move, when he could have gone around me.Before I knew it,he was out of the car.Had me up against his patrol car.And by the time it was all said and done.Several of his buddy cops were there. They charged me with being in the state longer than 30 days, and not having a NYS tag.(This wasnt true)I fought it in court.I paid a lawyer $250.00.So the moral isbefore you stop a officer of the law for speeding. You best have a video camera,a witness, and all your ducks in order.Because these cops will pay you back

I do believe that the cops are allowed to cruise at a higher rate of speed than the rest of us. I do not know what this speed is. But does it really matter? As long as they are not crashing or doing something dumb, they are there to protect and should be treated as such. Morons on here really need to find something better to witch about than this.
oh, and "payback" if you walk around a store enough times because you don't know what you want, you draw attention to yourself. The officer probably was concerned and wanted to make sure you weren't in there to steal anything. You are the one to run your mouth over something so tedial and get yourself in trouble, rather than keeping it shut and leaving without getting arrested. It's logic, use your head.

Yes it matters, if we let a officer of the court break a law and don't hold them accountable then we are just as bad as the law breaker. I respect the law and expect it's custodians to do the same. I heard a cop say one time, "I am the law". No you aren't you work for it idiot. Some go off on an ego trip and need to be stripped of their duties. This is how comunist parties take control. An officer has his lights and sirens to get him to an incident, excessive speed is not allowed. You can not break a law to uphold a law.

I'm a very elderly person, and I try to never exceed 20 mph....even on the interstate...A police officer pulled me over the other day and wrote me a ticket for doing 5 mph in the fast lane on the interstate..when I tried to tell him that half my brain was shot out on Omaha Beach..he laughed at me then he raped my dog....go figure
