What is the Goth culture?
Goth, as a modern movement, started as one component of the punk rock scene. As the latter faded, Goth survived by creating its own subculture.
The first use of the term Goth in its present meaning is believed to have been on a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) TV program. Anthony H. Wilson, manager of Joy Division described the band as Gothic compared with the pop mainstream. The name stuck.
Their use of black clothing was originally "something of a backlash to the colorful disco music of the seventies." It also stuck.
The movement first became established in the Batcave, a nightclub in London, England, in the early 1980's.
Spreading to the U.S., it first became popular in California.

Religion:

Many Goths reflect popular culture and are probably nominal or devout Christians. Atheism, Agnosticism, the New Age, Gnosticism, Shamanism, Wicca, other Neopagan traditions, and other minority faith groups are represented more frequently than in the general population.
Goths often wear Christian crosses or Christian crucifixes, which many regard as a pre-Christian religious symbol. Others wear New Age/ancient Egyptian Ankh symbols. Some do this as expression of their religious beliefs, some for satire, and others because they like their appearance.
From the Satanic connection, the perception has grown that Goths are frequently linked to Satanism. There are a few Satanists who are also Goths,but all Goths are not satanists and all satanists are not Goths.

Stereotypes:

People have accused or described Goths as being:

* Depressed,
* Unusually bigoted,
* Violent,
* Suicidal,
* Involved in illegal drugs,
* Vampires or believe themselves to be vampires,
* Sado-masochists,
* Satanists,
* Musicians, painters, and other artists,
* Computer programmers
* Wearers of black (some wear white and gunmetal)
* Dyers of their hair,
* Users of white makeup.

Some of the above probably apply to some Goths, but definitely not to all.

Gothic Culture
according to the book "the goth bible":

defining goth is like defining god. to call goth merely a subculture does not do it justice... Nobody knows what modern goth is about, but the simplest truth is this: Goth is a state of mind. and while most people who define themselves as goth or gothic dress the part, a lot of people who do not wear fishnet and velvet are goth inside. goth is a way of being that embraces what the normal world shuns, a lean toward and obsession with all subjects dark and grim, a view of life that incorperates the world of the night and the world of the day. the gothically inclined make room for the noir in a global culture that favors white and prefers its darkness sanitized... Goths have always existed. they just call themselves "goth" these days because its amusing.

gothicsubcuture.com says:

"But what does gothic mean in regards to the group of people? Here's where it gets confusing. There are things that many Gothics like that are not gothic (Industrial or Classical music). There are things that are gothic that many Gothics dislike (vampires, interest in death). There are things that some people think are gothic that are not gothic (bands like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails), and there are things that do not call themselves gothic even if they are considered gothic by most people (bands like Sisters of Mercy and Dead Can Dance). However, there's no Grand Gothic Judge to decree what is truly Goth and what is not, although there are plenty of people who claim to be it. IT'S AN AMBIGUOUS LABEL with many people using it that don't understand what it means. The people who do understand it often have many different definitions."

goth.net says : a subculture that evolved from a musical scene to encompass art, literature, fashion and a shared 'dark aesthetic .

Goth or Gothic is a style NOT a person!!! The style originated in 15th century Germany and was called "Middle Gothic." The Gothic movement was a response to the repression of Christianity and the movement had to develop as underground: a pagan revival of sorts. Many members of this Middle Gothic movement were, then as now, Artists, Poets, Musicians and Thinkers who questioned the paradigm that created their society.

They tended to use Paganism as "a Sword of Illumination" to light the path through the world that is dark, asleep and blind. The Goth style of dress, the darkening of the eyes, as well as the Gothic symbols where meant to represent a sense of self empowerment and solidarity within the movement.

The colors red and purple and the shade black were chosen to represent this movement as a way to mock the church and the royal courts (Kings & Queens) who saw fit to force religion on the people. The people who made up this Middle Gothic movement were not violent nor were they drawn to the ways of evil (as it is with the Goth way of today) but were only concerned with being afforded the right to express their creativity and ideals through their arts without the fear of oppression.

Are a bunch of sideshow freaks who cut theirselves and 90% ugly. They are the original Emo's, their genetics have mostly progressed the Emo movement. They like to cut theirselves, masterbate, have sex with other ugly people. They reject Christianity and Catholicism because they just arent right in the head, are losers, and like to paint their bodies black. They reject all things mainstream, because mainstream has rejected them. Thats why they act like they do. Thats there only way of getting attention, its a crying out of their inner pain they feel. They live in their own little freak world, playing Magic the gathering, watching the Matrix, deciding whether to take the blue or red pill(kind of similar to people around here:)). How do I know these things you may ask? I infiltrated them at college and done a Thesis on their behavior. I bought black clothes, painted my fingernails black, and bought a couple Coal Chamber and Slipknot T shirts. We sat around smoking pot and playing video games. We went out rarely, My friends thought I was crazy. One night we took acid and had a sexual orgy, there was 6 of us,it kind of was cool, that one girl tripped hard though, that was probably the best time I may have had in my life, but I was almost brainwashed into their behavior, I had to detach myself, I was depressed all the time, and started cutting myself, finally I had a Goth Intervention. Thank God I was saved, their evil spell almost had me sucked in, I'm just glad this was Pre-Eclipse and Pre-My Chemical Romance, or I may have been in the darkside forever. Once I got out, I feared for my life, they kept coming around my dorm Window chanting and following me around, they made references to chopping me up and drinking my blood and doing some type of Wiccan ritual that was in one of their notebooks. Well I got a A for my Thesis, the Professor was so impressed that I would immerse myself in such a different type of lifestyle, it made him change the way he grades things like that. I wish i could apologize to those Goths, but 2 of them killed theirselves, and the others dissappeared, I just hope they grew out of that stage. If you really want to piss a Goth off, Just call them EMO!!

I'm not pissed off, why should you exposing your ignorance piss
me off ?
I can tell by your spelling and grammar that you never wrote a thesis.
Emo is not Goth. Just like satanism some Goths are satanists but all satanists are not Goths.
All Goths are not satanists but some Goths are satanists. Many Goths are Christians.
Some Emo are Goths but not all Goths are Emo.
Many Goths including me, are also models,dancers, etc. so there goes your ugly theory.
Most Goths are very happy people who love to party and have fun. They enjoy art, music, dancing, etc.
I'm an atheist so f**k magic and role playing games. Again only some Goths are into that. So what if they are ? Christians believe a dead guy came back alive and flew off into space. LMFAO
Please come out of the 80s it is the 2010 soon it will be 2011.
Goth like everything else has changed since you were last misinformed.
BTW, I'm in a dressing room at a Goth club right now awaiting my curtain call at 9;00 PM.
It's really nice here and everyone is having a great time from the sound of things. I can't wait to get out there and dance and live life.
Have fun do whatever it is you do ? Make up lies about something you don't understand ? Have fun with that.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but you don't know what you're talking about. I doubt if you've ever met a Goth. You need to read my posts and forget your lies. You should have left out the part of how you wrote a thesis. Yea, sure you did. I doubt if you graduated high school.
