Eastern Kentucky has had a coal based economy for a long time. But now we seem to be losing that industry. There are places low sulphur "clean coal" can be extracted, and the industry is moving that direction. Natural gas will continue to replace coal, and in the future wind and solar will slowly replace all fossil fuels.

Eastern Kentucky desperately needs to find new industries to keep us afloat.

I propose that we encourage our legislators to follow the Washington and Colorado example and legalize marijuana.

Marijuana should be legalized and REGULATED, just as alcohol is regulated and taxed. BUT, in order to obtain a license to grow for medicinal purposes, which would be passed 1st and is very close to legalizing, you CANNOT have ANY TYPE OF CRIMINAL record at all. The cost in obtaining a license runs about $25,000-$30,000 according to the information that has been distributed thus far. How many citizens of this county would be able to either obtain a permit to grow and then how many would be able to afford the permits, and control the environmental area, security around their home/business to grow medicinal marijuana? It is possible, but it would require a lot of change and investment. Are the people of this county willing to "change" or "invest" to improve their way of life? That along with the ACTUAL number of people in this county it would benefit from this business.

if my vote is what would make it legal then it would never be legal. damn pot heads have killed too many brain cells and should not even be allowed to vote. drugs are drugs and pot should be for cancer patients only.

What did the post say? "Medicinal Use" and you state "cancer patients only"... What do you think Medicinal Use is? Educate yourself. People have to have a license to "grow" "MEDICINAL MARIJUANA" TO GROW and marijuana be regulated. You really need to be EDUCATED to PARTICIPATE in this topic. It isn't about DRUGS and BRAINS CELLS. Patients with severe head trauma, cancer, aneurysms, Hep C, Chronic pain, ALL benefit from Medicinal Marijuana. I would much rather see prescriptions of CONTROLLED MARIJUANA being prescribed than a PILL! Are you aware that the majority of the prescription pills are shipped from China? Are you aware that the FDA DOES NOT TEST THE CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS of prescription pills, even blood pressure, anti-psychotic, anti-depression, ALL of the anti-seizure medication, DIABETIC medication, cholesterol medication, not to mention ALMOST EVERY SINGLE PAIN PILL but once (1 time) ever 7 years? Have you not read the reports of all the recalls regarding China? Think of the products the United States has had to pull off our shelves due to levels of lead in the products we utilize everyday! Would you NOT rather see our state prosper off of a plant God put on this earth rather than a "PRODUCT" manufactured? Look at the synthetic drugs that are killing young adults and kids. If we regulate marijuana for "MEDICINAL USE" AND ALLOW GOOD, HONEST, HARD WORKING CITIZENS TO GROW... MAYBE, JUST MAYBE... THIS COUNTY WILL PULL ITSELF OUT OF THE RUT WE ARE IN WITH PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND METH AND ACTUALLY HAVE SOME "TRUE PRIDE" IN OURSELVES! THE POSSIBILITIES of THE PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE MADE FROM MEDICINAL MARIJUANA ARE UNLIMITED... You do NOT have to JUST SMOKE WEED! You can ingest marijuana in food (brownies, cupcakes, health food bars, cakes, etc...) People have to STOP being so "NARROW MINDED"! You have to be able to "maintain" your life! This is no different than any other aspect of life you control. Your diet, your social life, WORK... Everything in moderation... It takes WILL POWER to control your diet, the same with an addiction and drugs. This county has been a "dry" county because we cannot or do not think we can "maintain" or control our alcohol consumption, so we continue to vote "NO". At some point dear readers, we all have to take responsibility for our own actions and our own lives. We all have to be able to maintain a balance. Medicinal marijuana is a POSITIVE choice, not just from a physical stand point but an economical stand point as well.

because some of these brain dead nuts want to make it legal so they can smoke it to get high not medical use. and i do know alot about it. i smoked it when i was young and still have friends who smoke it now and yes they have lost vital brain cells. and yes some of them have moved on to stronger stuff. its sad to see people let their lives go to hell over drugs. and if it was raised for commercial use they would have to put high voltage fence around it and still some of the brain dead pot heads would try to get in and get fried on the fence.....but it will never be voted to be legal in kentucky, so no sense in arguing over it.

IT IS CLOSE TO BEING PASSED NOW. I AM NOT A LIBERAL BY FAR, I AM VERY CONSERVATIVE. We are not talking about "brain dead nuts wanting to make it legal". We are talking about HONEST, HARD WORKING CITIZENS WHO DO NOT HAVE CRIMINAL RECORDS, WHO CAN AFFORD TO GET PERMITS TO LEGALLY GROW A REGULATED CROP OF MEDICINAL MARIJUANA. Marijuana is NO different than Nicotine, Caffeine, BUTTER, LARD, FRIED TATERS, BACON, or ANY OTHER ADDICTION YOU MAY HAVE! IT IS A MATTER OF SELF CONTROL AND MODERATION. FOR THIS PURPOSE IT IS FOR MEDICINAL USE ONLY! The discussion is HOW TO RECOVER FROM THE LOSS OF MINING! Utilize WHAT YOU KNOW HOW TO DO AND REGULATE IT SO YOU DON'T HAVE ALL THE "DRUG DEALERS" ON THE STREETS! It is called "CHANGE"! Sometimes you have to be a little more open minded to PROGRESS and not so NARROW MINDED AND BLIND IN POVERTY

This is NOT an argument, it will continue to be voted on and it will be passed. There are doctors in Lexington and Louisville already participating in trial studies of the program. People are already applying for permits and seeking the PROPER AUTHORIZATION IN LEGAL GROW OPERATIONS. THIS WILL BE PASSED, LIKE IT OR NOT. Please EDUCATE yourself on the benefits of Marijuana, Medicinal and economical along with the long term affects it would have on the counties and the Commonwealth. I for one do not enjoy our poverty stricken area, nor the prescription drug affect this community suffers from. This is not to mention the affects the Meth, "Needle Junkies" aka people who are addicted to a "rig", Heroine, Synthetic Drugs, and other drugs that have consumed this community and others like ours. Don't you think it is time to stand up against the big drug companies? The foreign companies that push prescription drugs into the United States? Are you "CONTENT" with what you observe NOW?

i know many that i went to school with and they have smoked it for over 20 years and are so brain dead they can not hold down a job. and do you really think these pot heads will not find a way af stealing the crops. and when they are smoking it and can not react fast enough while driving a car that they kill some family. get real, if it comes up for a vote the churches will fight it hard and the working people who do not do drugs will fight it. not to mention the ones who are already raising it and making big money on it will fight it passing. then the ones who fight everything from tobacco to alcohol. second hand smoke and such, there will always be more against it than for it.

May i quote something from the bible genesis 1-9 "I give all seed bearing plants to you". So dont bring up churches fighting the legalization of marijuana when you are to damn stubborn to even read the bible all the way through you know nothing of God or Jesus.

I'm all for it. Our climate is perfect for growing weed. We are sub-tropical. It should be legal for anyone over the age of 21. But if the patient is dying at a younger age or very bad off with something else, then by all means go ahead. If they had left weed alone in the first place half the population wouldn't be on the crap they are now. They did test with adults at the age of 21 and up over a span of time. It didn't kill any brain cells. Under 18 was a different story. The brain was still developing.
