LGBT Freind Ted Kennedy Dead at 77

Aug 26, 2009 Full story: lezgetreal.com 30

Senator Edward Kennedy, the liberal lion of US politics and long time friend to the LGBT community, died this morning at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts after a long struggle with brain cancer.

K

ennedy is one of only a handful of senators to originally proclaim their support for same-sex marriage rights when he voted against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996.

He was also a leader in expanding hate crimes and employment legislation to include sexual orientation and gender and was one of the lead sponsors of the Inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the Senate earlier this month.

“The promise of America will never be fulfilled as long as justice is denied to even one among us,” Sen. Kennedy said when speaking about ENDA. “The Employment Non-Discrimination Act brings us closer to fulfilling that promise for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens.

The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund said in a statement Kennedy was a fighter for LGBT rights.

“Good men serve others but great men take care to serve the least fortunate,” Victory Fund President and CEO Chuck Wolfe said. “Senator Kennedy was a great man. He made a career of fighting for the poor, for women, for racial minorities, and for basic human rights for LGBT Americans. Senator Kennedy’s life was marked by generosity and a legendary tenacity that earned him the respect of his colleagues and the affection of the public he served… But he will always occupy a special place in the hearts of LGBT Americans, who saw in him a fierce champion for their full equality.”

Daniel... I usually let you just go on, but not this time....

I am deaf, and it was Kennedy who pushed the Americans with Disabilities Act and made it happen... he made it so I could work and live on a level playing field...

He was a lot of things... but to me is the man that gave me the life I have today.

I did not agree with 100% of Kennedy's views but did agree with about 95%. Despite his somewhat execrable personal life, including still-unresolved suspicions of a covered up murder, he was a great advocate for the left wing of the Democratic Party. Not as great as his two brothers would have been had they lived longer, but still great.

He will certainly be missed.

The guy was a bum and should've gone to prison.

And The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by President Bush. He gets no credit ?!

(I have a cousin who was born deaf, and I have been very interested in deaf culture for a long time).

Bush gets credit only for signing a bill he knew he had to sign. Kennedy is the person who made it happen, and gets far more credit. Calling him a "bum" shows that you're not interested in credit where credit is due, only in bashing liberals, even mere hours after their tragic death.

Disagree strongly on two points...first the "covered up murder" wasn't covered up and calling it "still unresolved" after more than 45 years and more books and blather than any event in history, which singlehandedly prevented Senator Kennedy from becoming president...why on EARTH is it neccessary to even bring it up now?
And Edward Kennedy was a GREATER liberal leader than the President, whose legacy includes not only great accomplishments but also terrible ones, including his sick attitude towards Communism which we're still paying for and which caused massive death and destruction in Vietnam and pointless suffering in our still inhumane and idiotic policies towards Cuba. He also helped bring the tax rates on the wealthiest Americans ridiculously low, and was far too tolerant towards the corruption in the FBI and from Hoover. A good president, yes, but when you look at the overall legacy Edward Kennedy may well have been the greatest of them all. Sadly we'll never know what either JFK or RFK could have accomplished with a lifetime of service to our nation. Thankfully we did get a lifetime of selfless service to our nation from Edward, and the nation has benefitted greatly as a result.

That act also let worthless drunks and fat slobs keep their jobs. In a free country, if you can't perform the skill required or are the most qualified, then you don't get the job. Only fascists cry to government to "level the playing field" by the barrel of a gun.

No, only facists think a free country means "you're free to take advantage of those less fortunate than yourself and to allow them to starve while you get yourself obscenely wealthy." There is nothing "fascist" about equal opportunity.

Please explain where the ADA applies to "worthless drunks and fat slobs."

I do more for charity in one month than you have done your life time. I support charity 100%. I don't support stealing wealth from others and then call it taxation, emanate domain, or asset forfeiture. There have been numerous cases when employers were forced to rehire people because the ADA thinks obesity and alcoholism are disabilities. Not to mention people with foul odors.

Sorry, but I still have suspicions about the whole Kopechne (spelling?) affair and I feel the other two were sharper, especially Robert.

Greed: insatiable desire to obtain wealth/property belonging to other people.

Self interest: the natural desire to obtain and keep the product of one's own labor or property morally and legally obtained through trade or inheritance.

Greed: insatiable desire of Democrats to obtain wealth/property from people who actually work for a living, and give to the welfare queens who drive around town in Cadillacs attending Al Sharpton-organized events.

First of all, unless one is into fisting, anal sex does not involve the colon, only the rectum, just as vaginal sex does not involve the fallopian tubes!

Second, lots of gays don't do anal sex and lots of straights do.

Third, why do you use it so much as a taunt for gays? Most likely, you are really afraid of something going up your butt. Did your father or uncle rape you as a child? Or do you secretly fantasize about having sex with men in the passive role and it gets you upset. If the latter and you don't plan to get therapy, please choose suicide as we don't need you in the population. We already have enough pimply-faced teenage homophobes from the bottom of the gene pool.
