Actually, there were 3 different types of blackbirds identified. One live bird was found disoriented and walking around, repeatedly, in circles. In another, similar incident, misuse of Avitrol was discerned to be the culprit.

What I don't understand is how officials could immediately rule out mass poisoning because so many died - before any necropsies were performed (due to be done today with test results due out this week).

I also don't understand how city council could insist to the media that "there is no problem" since they hired a private firm to clean up the mess. The mess is NOT the problem!

I hope this doesn't end up being another Beebe issue swept under the rug and put to bed. Citizens cannot depend on the local paper for any real news because if the mayor doesn't like what's said, nothing more is printed.

Would also love to know whether any Avitrol or other product was purchased recently. Another post points to the birds being a huge nuisance at Tire Town in Beebe along with the mayor's failed plan to shoot off cannons to scare them all away - Tire Town is only one mile or less from the site in which they fell from the sky. The use of Avitrol and other pesticides by municipalities small and large is an issue currently under the microscope and often a plan that is thwarted due to public outcry in lieu of more humane tactics, such as sound repellent devices. Hope this isn't just another good old boy play now / deny later decision made by the city council. Suspicious that city council is publicly denying the existence of a problem before any testing has been done.

These are all birds that travel and feed in a flock except for the dove. Poisoned grain still makes the most sense. My guess either the town or a farmer put it out. The fish kill could be their attempt to get rid of the evidence by dumping it in the river away from their hometown. If it is poison in the river then the people drinking the water downstream could start dying emasse also.

They killed Starlings in my area a few months back. Hundreds of birds fell from the sky and NOT ONE person was informed that they would be killing htese birds. The residents were left to clean up the mess with no reason or warning. Starling happen to be an extremely invasive species. They smell really bad and multiply like theres no tomorrow. Killing them is supposed to balance out the eco system but there is something fishy about it. The public is not being informed.

This makes no sense, first of all blackbirds are not nocturnal birds (like owls), although they do migrate in flocks of up to 5 million- they roost for the night when darkness falls.
The workers who cleaned them up wore bio-hazard suits.
