Why would any responsible pet owner not want to have their dog vaccinated? Even if the dog is never allowed outside without being on a leash or in a fenced in yard, there's always the possibility that it could be bitten by a rabid animal. People who dont' use common sense and don't want to take proper care of their pets shouldn't have any.

A senator should be held EQUALLY responsible for vaccinating his dog, and should NOT have had the court ticket reduced from $60. to $30.. It is time to hold our LAWMAKERS accountable for the SAME thing the general public is responsible for.

Equally, the dog, like MOST pets, pay the price of their IRRESPONSIBLE owners. I hope the dog has an excellent home now.

Hurt reported that he had given his dog away. He's an irresponsible individual/pet owner who should not be allowed to have any more pets/animals of any type.

As justifiable punishment, I'd like to see the Senator subjected to the series of rabies shots that the victim had to endure. And then take a rolled up newspaper and bonk him on the nose.

It wasn't the dog's fault. The burden of responsibility for the rabies vaccination and maintaining control of the animal lies with the owner. Incidentally, Mike Vick didn't receive a harsh enough sentence for his crime.

Too late for him to be a responsible dog owner. Why wasn't his dog vaccinated? And what good does it do to give the dog away -was he not attached to his pet? The people of Danville and Pittsylvania County deserve a representative who has more on the ball than this guy! Looks like he's only interested in serving his own interests.

The headline should read "Dog has to have rabies shot after biting Senator"! Poor dog, he will never get that crappy taste out of his mouth:)

If your dog is not vaccinated, and ends up being bitten by a rabid animals, more often than not they have to be put down. The disease progresses quickly, and as a matter of fact, if a human is showing signs of a rabies infection, it is already too late for them as well.

My other question is, why in the world would someone just up and get rid of their dog like that? I would have fought for keeping my dog.

Because they're not a responsible, caring pet owner like you. He should get in trouble for giving a dog away that isn't vaccinated. What happens if he bites someone else. The officials should track that dog down and find out where it is and did it ever get vaccinated. Heck he probably took it out somewhere and dumped it. No wonder I think politicians are a bunch of selfish, lying a holes. May he get what he deserves.

Kaelinda - Rep Hurt should also have been charged with criminal negligence for having let his dog be in a position where it COULD bite someone. Owners should take responsibility for their dogs, and should keep them confined or on leash at all times. If they can't do that, maybe they shouldn't own dogs.

Why didn't the Senator get the full $60 fine? Because he's a senator? Is that "equal justice under the law?" I bet if he were a working class person, he would have gotten the whole $60 fine!

The Senator is entirely at fault here. He broke the law by refusing or failing to get his dog vaccinated. I hope the bitten person sues the Senator for a few thousand dollars - about twice the medical bills - for pain and suffering!

When the dog gets hungry, you should be cognizant of the dog's needs so the dog can be in order. The dog is sending a message that he is hungry by the indicator strategy.
