Child Hit on Mt. Vernon Road

A child on her bike was hit on Mt Vernon Road tonight and the driver was allowed to drive off and go home. Seriously??? The screech marks that her car tires left on the road were 35 feet long and the child is in the hospital. People are now allowed to plow down our children and go home??

Of course kids shouldn't play in the roads but we all know they sometimes dart out without thinking - that's why we should be careful. The 35 foot long screech marks that were left behind tells me that the driver wasn't within the 25 mph limit for that road.

shut the f*ck up and get a life outside of topix troy. if this person was driving according to the law then there wouldn't be 35 feet of skidmarks. the car in question was a 4 door white vehicle with a licence plate that says Hollywood, not sure of the spelling. and as far as i know and accident with a motor vehicle reqires an exchange of information and insurance between all parties.

Exchange of insurance information? Did the child have bicycle insurance? I think not. That's what pisses me off! People have to insure their cars, buy plates and pay personal property taxes but we have to share the road with bicyclist and they don't have to do any of those things. If anything is going to be on a road it should be insured.

The bicycle should not have been on the road. No matter how fast the car was going (the expert has not announced the speed yet) if the parent would have kept the child out of the street then the child would not have got hit. Mount Vernon traffic is terrible, NO place for a child on a bike. Speeding is terrible and rarely monitored. Even if this driver was obeying the speed limit, anyone who is familiar with this road would have to be crazy to let a kid near it on a bike!

And to WTF, there is insurance. Bicyclist could either: subro against the at fault party (driver of the car) who we hope has insurance, use the med pay off of their home owner's policy (if they have such coverage) use their health insurance coverage (again if they have such coverage).

Well lets put it this way... Someone gave the child access to the bike therefore allowing the child to ride on that busy road - or said parent or parents had no clue where there child was - or they left the child in care of someone who allowed it. Just as bad in any scenario.
