Does anyone else think the prices for football and cheerleading are insane? I'm not understanding what all the money is for? Can anyone tell me?

It is ridiculous!! I was gonna sign my little girl up until I seen the prices. I figure they make the prices so expensive to keep the less fortunate away. Cause of course the yuppy cheer moms and football moms of the valley wouldn't want a poor ugly fat kid on the cheerleading team or football team.

Total agree! I didn't know anything about the costs till after I signed up my kid up but we've already got so much invested I don't know what to do. We are just a middle class family that wanted to get involved in some sports but geez its breaking our bank.

I played football from midget league through high school for hurricane and it only gets worse even after you pay the sign up fee it seems like they want even more money. Best of luck to your children

Thanks Mike! It seems like they want more money every day. And they have mandatory fundraisers which my kids don't see a dime of that money. Do you know if this a non-profit organization? I have figured up with just the registration fee and roughly 200 kids, that's $14,000. That's just the registration fee! I do realize there are many expenses involved but it just seems like someone is padding their pockets.

Thank you for the info. I do realize all the expenses and I know it's not cheap. I am really not hating just curious where all the money goes. I don't understand how all the other areas are so much cheaper.

I didn't think you were "hating" ... That's just a name I used on another forum and never changed it.

Don't forget that the league probably had to hire additional security after a crazy father beat his kids during a practice not too long ago, because they weren't meeting his expectations. You never know when he will have another IED flare up.

I totally understand your frustration it was a total shock when we got the total for cheerleading it was much higher than we were lead to believe and then we have to pay for cheer camp on top of that. We also have a football player who does not fit the provided equipment so the local sporting good store got a big chunk of change also. Seems like money-money- money. Everyday something else maybe it will get better once the games start.

I hope so:) my kids are enjoying it and I can't stand to tell them that we can't afford to do this so I'll just suck it up to see them happy. I just wish the league had been a little more informative when it came to the prices before we were already signed up.

I am guessing this is the first time your daughter is doing cheer. Your child is getting instruction 4 nights a week....The sign up fee was 70.00 and then 300 which is for sideline uniform, bags, windsuit, bows and trophy fee. It you were to enroll them somewhere for cheer for the year you would be paying about 3000.00. 370.00 is alot of money, but all these things cost money. If you cant afford it, I would cut your losses now. No one is padding there pockets. Everyone is a volunteer. You are probably one of the parents that complain about everything while all these people are giving there time. What a horrible things to say "people padding there pockets" and other places are not cheaper

Michelle I was also shocked at the prices at first. But I see now what all my daughter is getting out of it and it is well worth the money. If you can't deal with the prices then go to one of your cheaper places that you mentioned. The coaches work so hard and dedicate so much of their time to these girls. Why don't you volunteer some of your time before you complain?

The Midget League does pay rent....Hurricane Middle School will get their check fro $2,000 this year for the use of the field, and IF the kids get to play at the High School...on a field that the "community paid for"....it will be several more hundred dollars. The ref's for a home game will be between $400 and $500 ....between the last two seasons, the board has spent around $15,000 on new helmets and shoulder pads alone, not to count mouth pieces and other items. There will be a homecoming bonfire, with FREE food and drinks, along with other blow ups for the kids, the banquet at the end of the year is a full meal...FREE for the kids and their parents. IF you would like, you can see the breakdown of money taken in last year and money spent out, there is nothing for the League to hide! As far as the cheer side, I agree it's steep, that is why they have fund raisers... The cheer folks are wanting new competition uniforms....that will cost approximately $25,000.....so you see, running an organization, such as midget football, baseball or whatever is not cheap. And I agree with Rachel....volunteer some time, that is how you find out what is going on!

Also I want to add, there are several folks who came to the Board and told them they could not afford, and they were given a break on their sign-up costs. It truly upsets me that anyone would think that someone is PADDING their pockets. These VOLUNTEERS work many hours to make the league run smoothly! Ask any of the other franchises in the Kanawha Valley....they will tell you Hurricane has one of the best there is. I have heard it many times! You will see when you go to some of the away games....Good Luck, and if you ever have a concern, please talk to a board member...that is why they are there.

That was a completely rude statement to make. Nobody is padding their pockets. When you consider all the expenses it takes to run this organization, you'll think before you speak. Rent, equipment, uniforms, insurance, referees are just a few of the expenses and they are not cheap. Instead of being so small-minded, get involved and vulunteer so you can see exactly what goes into making this a successful organization.

Look, I was not trying to start an argument, that's childish. I just stated my opinion and last I checked there is nothing wrong with that. I just wanted to know where the money was going. I now see, so just forget it. It's not that big of a deal. Some of you are blowing this way out of proportion. I said before I just wish the league had been more informative when it came to the costs.

Typical of anyone in hurricane to blow things out of proportion

There is nothing wrong with stating your opinion, but you were basically accusing people of stealing money and that is wrong. Please think before you write something like that again. It was very hurtful to those people involved. If you have concerns, ask the league. They will answer any questions you have.

She didn't "basically" accuse anybody by stating that it "seems like". I see comprehension runs low around these parts.

All I meant was that she needs to know the facts before she starts spouting off crap like that. There are a lot of people who have put in hours of their time to help the organization and they don't appreciate comments like that. Those people involved do try to come up with the best cost efficient solutions so the parents don't have to spend a ton of money. It's obvious she's new to this and should really word her words more carefully.
