Do you think the Sheriff of Hurley should have to pay back the paper service fees.
Iron County seeks AG's opinion on paper service fees
HURLEY -- Iron County Board of Supervisors Chairman Dennis DeRosso has asked for an Attorney General's opinion on whether sheriff Bob Bruneau should be required to pay back about $39,000 in paper service fees.
On Wednesday, Bruneau declined to answer when finance committee member John Wiita asked if he would pay back the funds, if that's what the county board decides.
The finance committee met in open session Wednesday to discuss the matter.
Following the meeting, DeRosso said he also asked the AG if any salary of an elected official can be adjusted mid-term. DeRosso said he got one opinion from the Wisconsin Counties Association that says fees are considered part of the salary. "They said they felt the adjustment could be made. I was not comfortable with that 'they felt,' and so I requested the AG's opinion."
The finance committee's only action on the matter Wednesday was its recommendation that the full county board back up the committee's March 11 recommendation to immediately stop the 50 percent collection of fees by the sheriff.
DeRosso said the county board will back up the finance committee's recommendation, but it will not take any further action until he receives the AG's opinion.
