Its a shame that their poor planning on the last purchase is rewarded with yet another property purchase. They bought the building for more than they are selling it for. I guess when its not money you worked for a loss is just buisness. lets just see the next announcement on who is buying it for that price. I guess money grows on trees and grant money and tax dollars are always on tap with the local leaders in Luna County. The old theater was a part of the deal and was to be torn down and used for parking for this big station to house everyone. That building was purchased a second time with grant money to be used for a youth center.any one see a youth center there? I hope that this second purchase was not another back door deal. Poor planning and weak leadership.

The location is better for the central and southern part of the county. Five acres and off the main roads for security.... is better.

A sub-station for the area north of town is probably needed in the future. Southern Sub-Station, next to the Border, is a 3 year work-in-progress

Lots of Federal money pouring into the Sheriff's coffers for Border Security....Is it really being used for the Border area..... or 35 miles north in Deming?

We really need a CITIZEN OVERSIGHT PANEL to monitor the Sheriff's Department as it spends all those monies....for the Border.

I agree with "Money Tree", the County has lost so much tax-payers money on projects that they purchase with grant money and then do nothing with them and try to sell them because it was a waste. Look at the person that the County has as their Grant Administrator, this person is over paid and does not know how do her job, and doesn't even have common sense. Why would the County use the CDBG money to buy the building by the Sanchez's Exxon gas station. We DO NOT need another Youth Center, we already have the Star Maxx to keep our youth occupied with activities. Why do we even have public meetings for the CDBG, this person has her mind made up with what she wants to do with this grant money, and many times, it's a bust, nothing comes out of it!

I think the County needs to get rid of the current Grant Administrator and get someone that knows what they are doing. Luna County is wasting grant money, but yet, she sits behind her desk making 65K a year wasting tax-payers money!

Get rid of her and while your at it, get rid of the County Manager, he is clueless to everything going on in this County and is listening to the wrong people.

The Sheriff is totally against a citizen oversight panel. He said just that prior to his election when the citizens asked that question at a public forum. He also stated that he feels he should be in charge of ALL the agencies. So Luna County voted in a dictator who is untouchable and does not have to answer to any one. Not safe, not wise, poor planning and abuse will continue. A smart leader gains more insight by wise council and is open to others suggestions.
This new location is better, however why did they not see the folly in the location they purchased years ago? The tax payers thought it was a terrible choice. But who are we just the people who pay for these bad choices.

Someone else mentioned on the Forum that the county holds around 29-31 properties already. If some of these were properties with good sized buildings on them then I'd like to know why some of those weren't considered before they spent another $170,000 on the K of C building. Although maybe what the county has and what this department wants can't work hand in hand, I don't know. I'm all for having good security, even at each end of town, but it seems that money tree they keep picking from is pretty bountiful for just about everything they have their eye on to purchase.

Was this announced in the newspaper? Was there a written notice given to the adjoining land owners allowing them the option to protest this? I would be interested to see how the County or City followed the rules and regulations for this type of purchase. I would like to hear how the land owners in this area feel about this in their neighborhood. With the added traffic and noise in this area how will that be addressed? Of the land owners in the area how many signatures were needed to move this forward?

Why is the old building being sold for less than the appraisal price? I know the purchase price was more than it is being sold for ,but why below the appraisal price unless the good old boys are adjusting paper work again at the court house? Was it purchased for more than it was worth a few years ago? Tax payers should see better use of their tax dollars recession or not. We work hard for our money and to see it squandered does not set right.

It does seem the Western Furniture/Diamond Furniture building was purchased higher than the appraisal price a few years ago. I don't beleive commercial property values have dropped since the aquisition. Does anyone remember who the owner/seller was of this property? Who was the appraiser?

Here we go again with sweetheart deals, underhanded dealings, unethical/questionable practices, call it what you want, it's suspicious every time I read about things like this. Maybe an internal investigation should be called upon, maybe someone from out of the area that can't be bought off, no connections to this county, don't know the answer but I can't see anything changing around here at all.

The owner was Bill Shattuck a City Council member. The appraiser I think was John Aurthor Smith. He is the one who has done many of the commercial appraisals for the city and County. The County also bought John Smiths office building and put the ''Luna County planning department'' from the court house in his old building. The records in the court house have the purchase price of these purchases and at the very least whom they are financed with and the tax value. This is public information. Shattuck leased the building to the county while the court house was in a remodel and the county moved many of their offices to the building.
The County then purchased the building for the Sheriffs department and the City police and dispatch to be housed under one roof. The City police and the Sheriffs department do NOT work together unless forced. There is no way Cobos is going to be in a building with the City Police. Thus the new five acre location.
At the very least Shattuck got rid of his white elephant and at the price it is set for sale for its a steal if you want a location by the underpass with sparse parking.
