THE DEMING HEADLIGHT LUNA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO, JUNE 12, 1914
TWO DAYS OF CELEBRATION July 3 and 4 One day will not be enough to hold all the celebrations that Deming will stage on July 4th, according to the views of the committee in charge of the arrangements, so the excitement will start on Friday, July 3d, and for two days the fun will be fast and furious The prizes offered for the relay races, the cow pony races, the steeplechases and other events of the kind will bring in the boys from the ranches, the cow camps and the ranges, eager to show what they can do, and every man jack of them ready to ride for the fun and the glory of it and "jist a-rairin' to go." The races for the boys and girls will also bring forth many of the ambitious youngsters who regard themselves as champions at their respective weights and distances. But a weighty matter still remains to be settled. That is the choice of a Goddess of Liberty. From now until July 4th the visitors to the moving picture shows will be given the opportunity to name their candidates for this high honor, and the votes for each candidate will be counted twice a week, and the results will be announced after each count. The only trouble is that there are so many pretty young ladies in Deming who could worthily fill the bill that there is going to be a hard time to pick one who is more suitable than all the rest, if such a thing were possible. But whatever the final result, there is no doubt that Deming's Goddess of Liberty will make Saint Gaudens' statue take a back seat, as far as style and appearance are concerned. Uncle Sam will be represented by at least four troops and a machine gun platoon from one of the finest--pardon us, absolutely the finest, cavalry regiment in the service. These will be our old friends of the 13th Cavalry. There may be more of them, but that many will certainly be here, not to mention the band of the regiment, which is admitted to be the best aggregation of its kind in the service of the U. S. Government. And when we tell you that trimmings will be provided, so that no one need leave the celebrations and go hunt up lunch, but they can stay right there and take in everything that is happening. After the oratory, and this will be of the best, and the barbecue and parade, the scene of action will be shifted to the race track, where the real excitement will begin, and where horse races, goat and burro roping will furnish enjoyment to everybody except the goats and SPECIAL TRAIN TO SAN DIEGO burros, Each evening dancing at the Deming Tennis court and this is the only time that any charge will be made throughout the whole two days' celebration. There will be lots of other events, which will be announced between now and July 4th. The committee is busily engaged in getting the program into shape and it is safe to say that Deming will attract visitors from all over the southern part of New Mexico, and whether they come as spectators or participants they will find the latch string out and everything waiting for them to whirl in and have the time of their lives. The marshal of the parade on July 4th will be none other than that gallant cavalryman, Captain Harry N. Cootes In the parade will be soldiers, National Guardsmen, cowboys, cowgirls, citizens, merry villagers, and strangers within our gates. One of the big features of the Saturday celebration will be the barbecue at the Grammar School Clean-Up for July 4th The committee on arrangements for the July 4th celebration ask the citizens of Deming to clean up their yards, alleys and lots, so that the city may present as attractive an appearance as possible when the visitors come here from all over the state on that day. A message to the mayor or the city marshal will bring a garbage collector to haul away the rubbish free of charge to the householders who will clean up their property, and it is advisable to have the work done as soon as possible before the fourth of July.
And that's the way it was 100 years ago.
