I agree this woman is vile. But I also wonder that the family didn't know that their father was living in filth? Didn't they ever visit him?

This is happening all over the united states. The elderly are abandoned by their family and are prime pickings for crooks who take their money and possessions and let them die a horriable death. There are many villins in this sad case. The family who ultimately wanted his money, and never came to check on him, the woman who was taking his money and let him die in a filthy condition and the justice system who really slapped her hands and sent her back on the street to find another old person. Where was the social services people surely someone else knew about his condition. what a horriable way to die, alone, in filth, being robbed. The bad person gets away because she has kin folk in local law enforcement.

If this is the same man we met on one of our trips back home, he was a very nice and pleasant man. I believe he lived in our old home at 309 D Street. His so called care provider/friend should not be allowed to walk the streets as a free woman, a life was lost and she lives on, where is the justice in this case. May he rest in peace and she not have any.

I couldn't agree with you more. However, with regard to social services, it is likely that no one else knew. He didn't report it and having no family or what seems like other friends in the area, the heinous wench who stole from him obviously wasn't going to ruin her scheme and report herself. Elderly abuse is a tragic situation. Above all, his family is the most culpable IMHO. This was their dad for crying out loud. You have an obligation to take care of your parents when they get older and if you aren't able to at a minimum you should ensure that the person/people who are caring for them are decent. It's no different than having someone look after your children, it's just on the opposite end of the spectrum. With regard to the undersheriff he shouldn't be morally prosecuted for the actions of his mother. Suffice it to say however, we should all hope that the apple falls very far from the tree. His mother is a criminal and I can assure you this isn't the first person she's done this too. To withdraw the amount of money she was shows that she's perfected her act for quite some time now.

What a horrible person. Vallie Phillips should have gone to jail for such an unspeakable crime. She got of easy if you ask me.

"Phillips is the mother-in-law of Kevin Flamm, who works for the Grant County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Raul Villanuava has said if he is elected to office in November, Flamm would be his undersheriff."

First off...Thank you, Terrence for reporting this.

Second...shame on our so called judicial system and the D.A.'s office for allowing this evil bitch to "walk". My stomach is in knots for this man and his family.

Thirdly...when is a statement from our sheriff going to come out regarding his pick for under sheriff if he is elected?

Fourth...is (was) this evil woman an officer or member of the "Hurley Pride Committee"?

This will be talked about on The Morning Show Live this coming Wednesday.

Every part of this article disgusts me.

Vallie Phillips bilked thousands of dollars off of her students when she had the beauty school years ago, This is no surprise but it is disgusting, disgusting, disgusting. And all she gets is five years probation. One day she will need a caregiver....maybe that's the greatest justice of all.

How can anyone be proud of this woman???? Did I say woman, I meant DEVIL. Too bad I can't vote there or that sheriff wouldn't get my vote.

That lady that's doing time in prison for stealing money and care-giving a few years ago didn't get probation....she got sent up. Is it because Vallie the Pig had the cash to make restitution right away ??? HOW DISGRACEFUL.

I get what you are saying but the family lived a good distance away. In another state altogether. This woman duped them into believing he was fine. She is pure EVIL!

First of all his family has to ask themselves could they have prevented what happened? Of course they could have. How many times in the last 10 years did they visit their father? Why not? How can they have trusted a complete stranger? I'm not saying that is woman doesn't deserve to be in prison, without question she does, but the his family shares culpability. Sad, sad, sad!

Fully understandable that they lived faraway but this occurred a period of 2-3 years which means that they never bothered to physically check on their father because if they had they would have seen the conditions he was living in. Secondly, what sticks out to me like a sore thumb is the amount of money she was able to steal. Houses in Hurley are cheap, why would this man need to finance a house if he had the money to buy it outright?? The family erred in not looking out for their father. It's just that simple.
