Although a bit farther away, has anyone been to Johnson Beach. It is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. There is an effort to establish a legal or at least tolerated area of that beach for Nude use.

I talked with the ranger on the phone about thongs and nudity at johnson beach. according to him Thongs for both sex are legal. Nudty in Florida is not, although he did not say it was possible at johnson it was infered that if you not up strutin you stuff if would most likely be ignored

With all due respect to this negative kind of thinking about true naturists is very inaccurate. Do a little research. The only legal clothing optional beach in the state of Florida has the lowest crime rate of the entire surrounding area. Haulover uses beach ambassadors to patrol the beach to protect everyone there. There will always be people that disobey the law and naturists want reasonable laws enforced. The major problems that face the developing areas is that there have been traditional nude use areas, beaches, hiking trails, lakes and the like. With cities and towns expanding into areas that were once unpopulated the remote areas to so skinny dipping or sunbathing are now under attack. I am not in any way referring to public sexual activity, any true naturist will tell you that is not what we are about and we don't condone such activity anywhere in public. We have families with morals too. Simple nudity is not immoral. Naturists have rights too, public beaches are just that "Public". In general naturists will go out of their way not to offend anyone, we also will go out of our way to educate everyone. I understand why people have the viewpoint of the last poster, they are misinformed. The NEF, Naturist Education Foundation seeks to provide truthful information about Naturists. The NEF is part of TNS, The Naturist Society, a world wide organization that promotes "Body Acceptance thru Nude Recreation" might be a good place for anyone to educate themselves.

Need To Be Nude, Thank you for your post, what you have said is pretty much what I have heard also. I haven't been all the way to the traditional use area but hope to do so this year. Johnson Beach is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and as I have said before there is an ongoing effort to get an area that will be acceptable. Other similar efforts have succeeded at other National Parks.

You are right there are too closed minded people that do not research any topic, just spout off. Us nudists have as much rights as anyone, and are ignored. I have been to Appolo Beach, by NASA, north east coast side, seems to be tolerated better in Valosa County than breverad county, Playlinda Beach South of NASA. It was a long time ago but no issues with Rangers, just stay out of the Dunes. Resorts are fine, the ocean beaches are more relaxing in my opion. In appropriate settings doesn't mean just anywhere. My two cents worth.

Thanks Mr. Fred, excellent two cents. Anyone that has never been skinny dipping has missed a great experience in an American tradition, or is lying. We pay taxes like everyone else, federal and state land is set aside for many purposes, naturists are just asking for their fare share. Nothing more and we aren't trying to force our views on anyone, but we will stand up for our rights as everyone should.

Hey Rob,
Thanks for the information. I, the Mrs. hope to check out the beaches, while the Mr. is in meetings when we travel to your neighborhood. Can you check out Thads.com and let me know if there is anything like this in the area. We were able to experience it on one of our other travels and had a good time, but I haven't had any luck locating something similar in the area. Thank you!
Hello. Will be in Destin the end of the month. Love to Travel, will you?

What side of the Hilton gives you the beach access from the parking lot?

UPDATE 9/5/12
Based on this post my wife and I went to check it out. We took a short cut to the nude beach, it can be reached more quickly if you simply park your car at the Sandestin Hilton, walk out to the beach, turn left, and walk at least 1 mile and you're safely in the preserve area of the beach. You'll know where 1 mile is by looking to your left (towards Hwy 98) and when you're parallel to the large microwave tower located at the Sacred Heart hospital on Hwy 98, you're there. If you want to walk farther, have at it, but this area of the beach is remote and secluded enough to go topless/nude.
We spent two hours there (I recommend bringing some light folding chairs and a beach umbrella)and we only had about a half-dozen folks walk by, each time we saw them coming well in advance and covered up. I'd say we spent half the time naked, and it's also possible to have some discreet fun :-0. WARNING: When we were leaving and getting dressed, I spotted a white pickup truck driving on the beach directly toward us. Sure enough, it was the Walton County sheriff dept, doing their sworn duty to protect the world from dangerous nudists (so much harder to do than solving less serious crimes like murder, drug abuse, wife beating, etc.). Fortunately for us we had already gotten dressed and he passed by without stopping. If he had arrived 5 minutes earlier though we would have been caught. I thought we were being very diligent in watching for interlopers but that white truck blends in too well with the dunes. So be forewarned, the cops patrol the beach, and our tricky dick continued to head down the beach towards Tops'l Preserve, obviously looking for more penises and breasts. I suggest the Sandestin Hilton approach because it's shorter and quicker, with no need to wait for a tram. Also you're car is safer to park at the Hilton and there's a great beach bar waiting for you when you return with your all-over tan. Enjoy!

Where exactly do you park at and which side of the building at the Hilton has beach access without being hassled?

I just returned from the Johnson Beach area of the National Seashore where I spent about a week camping on the beach. Once you get to the end of the road, you have to walk another half mile to the camping area. It was awesome!!! The beach was beautiful, secluded and very welcoming to my bare butt. There was a couple (2 females) relatively close to me who spent some time topless. There was also another younger couple (2 guys) who were nude about the whole time. Everyone was especially friendly. I never looked at it as a "sexual encounter" opportunity. It was just a great place to be naked and get some sun while meeting fun people. I was told the rule was be naked until you approached someone clothed or a Ranger approached you. Then you should cover but not necessarily get dressed. Every time I saw a Ranger approaching, I put a towel over my lap but they never even looked up. I was nude the entire time except when I returned to my car to go get ice or adult beverages. I can't wait to return next week for a few days!

Sounds like you had a good time at Johnsons, my lady friend and I hope to make it out that way this summer. The Gulf Islands National Seashore has been officially approached about a Clothing Optional area, although no official response has been received, as far as I know, things seemed to have calmed down in the last two years.

I don't know exactly where the parking lot is at the Hilton, I have been in that area a number of times. I just can't remember that area clearly. I have been asking some of my friends that live in that area but I haven't heard back from them just yet. The only thing I can remember is the antenna tower there at the hospital.

It doesn't sound as if the nudist part is as important as the random encounter.I don't want to go to the beach and see you or anyone else nude or encounter the trist you desire. These are public beaches not sexual encounter areas. Why can't you do this in your backyard inside a fence ,there are to many rapes and child molesters that will take advantagage of these areas.Sexual crimes are common with tourist who believe they are somehow protected in this tourist area and become victims.Buy some land and develope your personal nudist colony and leave the beauty and enjoyment of the public beaches alone, you can invite as many like minded people as you want without infringing on others rights not to have to see your nude body.
Get real. There are enough wide open spaces for everyone to have a place to feel comfortable without infringing on anyone's right. This would require nothing more than a few signs. However, as always, the rights of the few are sacrificed for the many ... All for a lack of creativity in solving the problem which ensures that problems do arise. Get off your puritanical high horse and make something happen instead of bitching about someone who is simply different than you.

Thank You Tourist, It really is as simple as a few signs but with antagonists and closed minded people it is an up hill battle. The one beach in Florida that has been a remarkable success is Haulover. If the people here in the panhandle only realized the economic value of such a beach. It drives me nuts sometimes. I have officially with a large naturist organization been working with part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore to get a clothing optional beach in this area. The excuses they come up with are silly to an open minded person. Wish me luck, it is already used as naturist beach with little problems. We would just like the signage and the full legallity to make it a great place.

JB will never be a "legal" spot until the local county laws are changed.
Or until the courts reprimand the NPS for issuing frivolous citations.
i.e. can't get a conviction for simple nudity so they give you citations for disturbing the peace or disorderly conduct even if there is no one else within 1/2 a mile of you.
