I have always thought that pawn shops are shady businesses, loan sharks that prey on the ignorant, poor and misfortunate of society. I think they also increase crime rates - burglaries and thefts because a thief will steal an item and take it to a pawn shop and obtain quick cash. I say, get rid of pawn shops and we'll have an improved society with less crime.

Well, if you feel that way, it must be true.

It's just how I feel, but that doesn't make it true. This forum is for people to voice their opinions and that's what I'm doing. Anyone has the right to disagree with me.

Most thieves don't take stolen items to pawn ships cause they are traceable there. In reality they are more likely tibeithervtrade them to their drug dealer or sell them on the streets or friends.

That may be true, but there will always be some theives that will take things to a pawn shop. Some people don't find out until much later that a ring or other item has been stolen. By the time they find out, the item is long gone. Some people don't make police reports either because they know the police aren't going to do any investigating.

So we should outlaw stores? Thats a silly approach. Sounds to liberal to me. We should really put some teeth into it and outlaw stealing as well.. That'll show em'.

Pawn shop are the only business that reports what they take in.. Jewelry stores antique dealers drug dealers second hand dealers don't. Shutting them down would fix everything?

No, shutting them down will not fix everything, but it WILL help. Pawn shops are the only businesses that reports what they take in because THEY ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO REPORT ALL ITEMS TAKEN IN. Pawn Shops don't report items of their own good measure and accord. They are required to report items because they are businesses that are MORE LIKELY to be utilized by criminals. Therefore, they are more likely to have stolen merchandise than other businesses. Maybe you can do something to get the laws changed so that antique shops, jewelry shops and second hand stores will have to have all items they purchase checked by the police as well. Then, we can all pay out MORE TAX DOLLARS to utilize police services for these businesses as well. I think the pawn shops should have to pay for the time the police spends checking for stolen items because they are shady businesses that draws the thugs to their businesses. If the same is believed to be true of antique shops, jewelry shops and second hand shops, then they should pay out for the police time for checking to see if the items they buy are stolen. These businesses aren't thought of as shady businesses that attract criminals or their merchandise would be checked out too.

You are probably one of those burglars or thieves that rob and steal from people and then go to the pawn shop and because they know your mechandise is stolen, pay you the cash without putting the information into the data system. Some pawn shops are in "cahoots" with the thieves and know how to get by without having record of the pawn. Pawn shops are crooks - period, anyway.

Think I'm silly? What do you call someone that poses a question like the one you posed above?

I don't like to hurl insults at people, but Zaphod deserves some thrown his way - calling people silly and stupid and then making some remark that doesn't make sense. Who does Zaphod think he is anyway?- sounds like a real jerk to me. Excuse me - I don't usually call someone jerk, but it seems fitting for Zaphod.

I have worked in a pawn shop for 10 years. We work closely with the police to get crime off the street. Anyone who really knows what’s going on will not come into a pawn shop with stolen goods because they know the likely hood of getting caught is very high. Current ID and video surveillance deters thieves. There are countless good honest individuals that enjoy using pawnshops for short term loans to get them by. Diamond Ring, you need to stop blaming problems on anything and everybody thinking it will make the world a better place. You need to look deeper in the material before you start to judge.

So you want legit businesses banned because you think this and you think that. What else should we do away with because you think sonething?
