About a month ago the Herald Dispatch runs a story where plant officials said layoffs are coming. I've seen nothing else. Did they change their minds?

They laid off 27....then brought 10-15 back. Yep they're that good at planning ahead.

Must be all those new smart managers that PCC brought in this year. I bet they have sales orders going thru the roof.

Yes, the new front office managers at special metals have come in and corrected all the manufacturing problems and the sales are going up like never before

Now if they can just spend some money on duct tape and hose clamps to keep the equipment running to get material out the door.
Maybe dabber will start listening to some of the real problems instead of walking the line daily with his blinders on so he doesn't see the $hitty equipment that makes $hitty product!
Yeah right!
We don't make product anymore, we create earned standard hours so we can hire more bean counters!

I would imagine top mgmt. walking the lines is much more useful than spending their time actually trying to get new orders...especially seeing how huntington's order books are so full right now

Unless you work there, you really have no idea what you're talking about. It's not that the employees aren't happy to have a job, it's that the inept management is running that place into the ground. The hourly workers have more experience with the day to day workings of the plant, but management thinks they "know better" and will try to get by on making metal with duct tape and chicken wire. It's hurting the quality of the products and the management refuses to listen.

So, if you say things are being done wrong, then you're not thankful for your job?
No, actually, I would like to see this job last a few more years!
It's not going to last much longer the way that it is being ran these days!
You must not work there or you are living in the fantasy land of the front office where every thing is good if you are told that all is good.
There are lists made every day, but we have to run the equipment to get pieces out that day. We'll wait until we can schedule down time. Never happens. Eventually, production has to stop because the machine can no longer operate to specs. Then, we ship the material somewhere else to be processed.
But, that is a good plan you have there, have you suggested it to the Dabber?

Now the tie wire has to be approved by the president himself before they buy it!
All supervisors do any more is add charts to the informational boards and pray that they are not yelled or ridiculed in in front of everyone else.
Lower management is not allowed to make decisions but get chewed out for making them when it has to be done.

Exactly right. The PCC management style often is to belittle subordinates. PCC managers seem to worry most about impressing other members of management.

You guys are a bunch of whiners. Why not take your wonderful work ethic elsewhere?

Sempron, it does sound like whining but it really isn't. It is coming from workers who care about the future of the place and currently feel it is not managed well.

The old hourly guys who've been there for 30+ years need to retire. The numerous guys on 8 hour restrictions and that's been on it for years need to find another job or retire. That place is managed by a bunch of morons. Then they bring in these military guys to be supervisors and they have no clue what's going on. The union is horrible and don't care what happens as long as they get their dues.

They need to fire all the deadbeat managers and promote from the ranks, like the way we use to. That's when we were the leaders in our market. Our quality stinks now and our production numbers prove this. You have to spend money to make money, it's not that hard. Desert the union and send them packing, promote from the men that understand how this plant needs to be operated. We have guys that lose more knowledge when they take a dump, then all these bean counter managers will ever know !!

Be interesting to see if special metals is still around in 2 years. Lack of booked sales has to be getting the negative attention of PCC managers at home office. Plus, I hear the best sales rep they had left to go to competition.

And the sales they do get are often late and/or poor quality. The death spiral continues. PCC management needs to get rid of carpet bagger managers who add very little value. Oh, yes they have degrees from fancy schools, but are mostly empty suits.

I think they just come through to make sure all the bulletin boards are being maintained.
1. Get group of highest paid local management together.
2. Walk to bulletin board display area.
3. Take turns saying "flex" and "toc" and "esh" and "fixed" and "Q1" and "Q2" and other acronyms we learned at the University of Poor Management while working on our Masters in BS!
4. Pick one guy in the group and yell, scream and belittle him to the point that they don't remember what we were mad about!
5. Say, "we want to see these numbers turned around in 2 (days, weeks, months) depending on their anger level at the time.
6. Go to the front office and decide to cut man hours by 10 percent and increase production by 20 percent
