A 29-year-old mom, vanished Without A Trace

This year, Andrea Hayslette went back to Coastal Carolina to finish her degree and was making straight A's when she disappeared during final exams. Larry Hayslette traveled to West Virginia on May 24 to visit his sick father. Two weeks later, he removed his belongings from the Surfside Beach apartment and has not been in contact with the Reburns, Selma Reburn said.
Larry Hayslette could not be reached for comment. In previous interviews with The Sun News of Myrtle Beach, he said he had no idea what happened to his wife.''We called and talked to everybody we know,'' Larry Hayslette said in May.''We don't even have a clue. I wish we had a clue.''
During an interview, Selma Reburn spoke of her daughter's bubbly personality and how she loved to take her kids to the library.
''She was just real friendly and outgoing,'' she said.''She always had to keep busy. I continue to pray to find out what happened to her.
The toughest part is what to tell the children about their mother.
Katie sees her mother's photograph and says,''I miss Mommy.''
Ryan is more inquisitive, and he tells people,''My mommy's lost.''
''We tell him,'You know she loves you,''' Selma Reburn said,'''and if she could come home, she would.'''

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. Katie Hayslette jumped into her grandmother's lap and hugged her neck in a tight grasp. The 2-year-old did not want to let go.
In the next room, Unsolved Mysteries was on television. Selma Reburn, Katie's grandmother, fought back tears as she spoke of the unsolved mystery of her daughter's disappearance.
Andrea Lynn Hayslette, 29, has been missing since April, and after four months without a word, Selma and Bill Reburn hold no hope of ever seeing her alive again.
''At first, there was always that chance she was pushed into a car or something and was still alive, but now ...,'' Selma Reburn said.''If you had ever seen her with the kids, you would just know she hadn't left them.''
A Family Court judge has given permanent custody of Andrea's two children, Ryan, 5, and Katie, to Andrea's parents. The children's father, Larry, has moved to Huntington, W.Va., where he has relatives.
In the beginning, Horry County homicide detectives investigating the disappearance maintained they did not know whether foul play was involved.
As time has passed without a trace of Hayslette, a student at Coastal Carolina University, police have put less faith in the theory that she voluntarily left the area.
''We're going to deal with it as if there is foul play until we can determine with some degree of certainty that she left on her own,'' said Russell Jordan, the lead homicide detective on the case.''How many people would walk away and leave it all behind? That's what concerns us.''
If she left on her own, Andrea Hayslette didn't take a cent with her, police said. She left behind her Dodge van and Chevrolet truck, her jewelry and, according to her mother, every piece of clothing except what she had on the day of her disappearance.
''We still feel, as in the very beginning, that for her to leave her children and not make any contact with her family or friends is not like her,'' Jordan said.
Paula Mitchell, a friend of Andrea Hayslette's and a bridesmaid in her wedding, said she fears the worst.
''I don't think Andrea's alive,'' Mitchell said.''She loved those kids to death and would never have left them.''
For much of the past six years, Andrea worked as a waitress at D'Antoni's restaurant, which is now under a different name. She married Larry Hayslette, who was a bartender at D'Antoni's, about four years ago. The couple lived in Myrtle Beach before moving to Surfside Beach about three years ago.

Could you give a description and age of this Larry Hayslette?

Larry Hayslette at the time was around 40-42 which would make him around 60. He was about 6 feet tall, slender build, blondish brown hair. He resided in Huntington West VA until moving to Myrtle Beach I'm guessing around 1980-83. Larry Hayslette spent time in a VA prison in 1994. The family of Andrea Hayslette considers him the only suspect in her disappearance. The family would like any current info. on Larry Hayslette's whereabouts.

I worked with her mom during this time although I moved and lost touch with her...I think of her often and pray for closure for them and have continually followed the case which has had little information online or in papers in quite some time.I am glad to see you re-posted the articles. Is he still able to be prosecuted if he is found to be guilty or they have more evidence? Praying for all of them.

"Is he still able to be prosecuted if he is found to be guilty or they have more evidence?"

There is no statute of limitations on murder.

Larry Hayslettte spent time in a WV prison- sorry for the mistype. After leaving Myrtle Beach SHORTLY after Andrea's disappearance, Larry returned to WV with a vehicle registered to Andrea. He forged her signature at the DMV. He was sentenced for this, and from what I heard, had an altercation in prison which extended his time.
There is no new evidence in the case but are curious about this new posting in the Huntington paper.
Was LArry Hayslette hired for odd jobs in New York or WV? He did get married in Myrtle Beach but his wife disappeared- there was NO divorce.
There was no trial because there was no body and very little evidence.

We've never heard of any Prison time. Its just hard to believe that this Larry Hayslette would commit such a crime. He is a pretty easy going person but, does like things done his way when working. He lives alone and pretty much stays to himself. He was a pretty heavy drinker but, quit for a short time then started again. We do live in Huntington,WV. I do know he had a birthday at the end of June and turned 61. If this information is helpful, I would really like not being mentioned, Please. He not only knows me but, some of my family as well.I would like for the information to be kept confidential and helpful in finding not only Andrea but, her family find justice. We are pretty sure this is the same man,in a town this small 57000 people with the University. We are not going to mention this to him,we happened on to this by chance. We hope find closure, God Bless.

To the op (original poster) PLEASE KEEP US UPDATED ON THIS. let us know if the above poster is talking about the same guy, and if so, that he's caught. I'll be praying for you, hoping this family will finally get some closure. Oh and I'm NOT.saying the above poster is talking about the same guy, but alot of coincidences...? You say you couldn't see him commuting this type of crime (that's what most neighbors say when a killer is found too) and you say he keeps really to himself.

You've got alot of peoples respect, because to help a family heal and put a killer behind bars, like you said in this small town too..most people would've kept their mouth shut, thinking it's not their problem, or they don't wanna get involved. Thank you for being a decent human being with a heart! I really hope the info you gave helps find him.

Thank you so much for the information. I, as well, just happened upon this newest November posting and was puzzled as how it was brought forward after this many years. Larry Hayslette is very personable! He has a good personality, a good work ethic, and is a people person. Many people in Myrtle Beach were friendly with him, BUT he is dangerous! He is a drinker, and he is a different person when he drinks. He was an abusive husband to Andrea. When he was being investigated, there were women in his past that were contacted and told some stories of his abuse.
I, too, do not want Larry in my life ever again, so I was concerned about putting this info. on the internet. The family has suffered greatly because of him, and we want to keep tabs on him to be sure he doesn't hurt anyone else.
Again, thank you for responding! Please post anything new you may have in the future

Am pretty sure we are all talking about the same person. Larry also worked as a handyman and had a side business in Myrtle Beach that did residential painting.
I think movies and television have a distorted the image of spousal abuse. We are not looking for a monster. We are looking for answers from an everyday guy who made a big mistake. He has a history of drinking and he hurt a previous girlfriend before being involved in Andrea's disappearance. Ultimately, this post was started because I believe that people can change, soften and decide to do the right thing. There is no time better than today for Larry to come clean, tell the whole story and help this family find Andrea.
Thank you all for your interest and support.

I attended elementary school with Andrea. Like many of us have done, I recently took to the Internet to search for my old friend. I was devastated to read of her fate. My heart is heavy.

I pray for her every night... the girl who shared my love of David Cassidy... the girl who bought me a 45 of "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" for my birthday in 3rd grade... the girl who taught me to do a cartwheel and that there is a true method to blowing bigger bubble gum bubbles.

Love and peace to Andrea's children, the Reburns, and her family and friends. God bless you.

Mr. Sparkman,
Thanks for your post. It is very hard to get publicity for a case this old. Seems that someone, somewhere knows something- maybe Larry talked to someone, etc. I agree that people can change, but Larry has not changed, especially if he is still drinking. I am fearful for other women in his area. Because he is so personable, women would not think there is any danger. The biggest relief would be to know the truth and to be able to place Andrea's remains where her family can remember her. Larry, however, functions without a conscience. Without a serious consequence, I do not feel he will ever reveal what happened!

William Sparkman,
I'm one of Andrea's children and I would like to sincerely thank you for posting this article about my mother's case which has haunted our family since she vanished in 1993. I first saw this piece at the end of last year before anyone had posted anything and have just now returned to see others have posted comments. I am very appreciative of anyone trying to help with the solving of my mother's case and for any new information that could be uncovered. This horrible crime has forever changed my family and to have closure would mean a lot to everyone. More importantly though than simple closure is the fact that my mother was a kind and respectable human being and deserves better than to have her legacy be a open or closed cold case file. It seems obvious exactly what happened to her and it makes it that much more frustrating not to be able to bring the responsible to justice. There really isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about what happened to her in May 1993 and about the situations she was put in. Now that it has been nearly two decades since she disappeared the probability of achieving the justice we seek seems to decrease with each passing day. That is why it is important to gain any new information that could be valuable in the solving of the case ASAP. May and June are busy times at the beach so it seems to me that someone somewhere could have possibly seen something abnormal that day or night that could be helpful information. I also don't believe that only ONE person knows what really happened that day. Again, I thank everyone who is concerned and willing to help solve this case and I know my mother would feel the same...
Thanks

maybe it would help if someone could post the original story from the sun beach times, or what ever news ran the original story. Also maybe possible to track his route back to wv and check every town to see if they have any unidenfied females around her age, there are topix bords in every town, maybe we could line up voulnnteers to check each county we live in and see if that would help. but would need a discription, and something about her, did she have any birthmarks, tatoos or any identifyable marks, broken bones when she was a child, ect. if someone could make a post like that we would know what we we're looking for. and could help check the towns of the route he took comming back to wv. Most people traveling will take a route that is familier to them,

STR and RCR...there is a new show called Missing Peace that uses psychics and police officers to try and solve cold cases. Would it be ok to send them the link to this page and just see if they would look at it for a future show...see if anything new might come of it? It is in its early stages but they've had some success.

I promised I would never stop trying to help find her. I moved away but every time I hear a body has been found there, I pray for closure for you. I found this link because I google him ever so often to try and find out what has become of the case. I think of her mom and daughter often though I moved and lost touch. I feel he is going to slip up. It is just a matter of time. Nothing would make me happier than to see this case be solved or at least have her remains back to give her family some closure.
