Saw a show on tv this morning, I think it was called "Monster Hunters", and they had a couple of different people from WV showing 2 films that were shot here fairly recently, depicting puma-sized black cats in our woods. Experts speculate that the animals might be either black pumas (which I think is reasonable and interesting) or perhaps black jaguars up from South America,(a little far-fetched, but I guess possible).

I remember my mother telling me that she saw one as a child, around 1950, in the woods where she was brought up. We thought it was just a wild tale. But now there are these videos. Maybe my mother wasn't spinning a yarn.

I also saw about a year ago, a show from England that had really amazing footage of these enormous black cats there, one very clear video of one climbing up into a tree and them jumping over a fence on a sheep farm, as well as others. If I remember correctly, experts concluded that there actually WAS a species of large black cat in England, the size of a puma. The footage from WV and England show what appear to be the same type of animal.

Do you think this is possible? Hunters, have you ever come across any big cat tracks? What do you think?

I live in Mason County not far from the Chief Cornstalk Wildlife Preserve and the Greenbottom Wetlands. We once saw some pretty big cat tracks while bringing the cattle in one winter when I was still pretty young. My dad worked with the Governor's Summer Youth Program every summer at Cornstalk around that time. I remember him talking to the guy who ran Cornstalk at that time and him saying that the WV DNR had released all kinds of non-native species at Cornstalk that included Black Panthers (to control the deer population), Rattlesnakes (to control the rat population) several species of wasps (at the time I believe there was a big fear of Africanized "Killer" honey bees and the wasps were supposed to control those if they ever made it this far north) and everyone's favorite house guests, the Lady Bird Beetle look alikes that invade our homes every year by the millions (to feed all of the birds of course). I also heard that the coyote problem we have now was caused by the DNR and that they either already did or are planning to turn some wolves loose. All of this is just hearsay but I have heard there is at least a little bit of truth in every rumor. Hope this helps.

I remember hearing my dad talk about a big cat once. He said he was driving down the road and it ran in front of him. He said it jumped from one side of the road into the middle and then to the other side. I can't remember what color he said it was though.

I turned off a road in Culloden trying to follow directions to get to route 10. I have no clue what road I was on, but I came to the bottom of a little hill and turned right. I went through some pretty small sharp curves and then came to an open area in a large curve with a house or two o the right side and a weeded open area on the left. As I entered that curve, something flew from the house side, crossed the road and landed right close to the tree line in the weeds. I am not joking that this thing was huge and had the shape like a terdactyl. It was daylight and the bird was gray and a large wing span, much larger than a vulture or something like that. When it landed, it was like the weeds (which from the level of the road seemed pretty tall) only came up to what would be its knees, per se. I was still driving in the middle of this curve trying to look at it cause it freaked me out and then I went through the tree line along the road and couldn't see it anymore. I thought about going back because I knew no one would believe me, I didn't believe myself. But I can't get that picture out of my mind. It was real, and it was freaky. It wasn't the distance of 30 or 40 yards from me when it landed. I keep wondering if anyone else had seen this or if my eyes fooled me. I looked at that thing practically the whole way until I passed it. I can't possibly think what else it could have been.

I believe you. I've seen several bears over the years, close to town, and one inside the city limits. I hope I never see a cougar in the wild, tho...lol

I know of many black bears around the area and have even spotted one myself near the east Lynn area. I know stories of the dnr releasing black bears near the east Lynn area so that makes sense. I however haven't heard that cougars have been released. I have seen one though with my own eyes at night time while camping. Mountain lions are very good travelers and can move up to 20 miles a day. It seems likely our fire attracted it from very far off and it came to inspect.

Couldn't agree more but hey, I didn't throw any Mothman references out there and did say they were just rumors. I have no clue if it's true or not but I do know that I saw some big cat prints. Maybe it was just an obese tabby. Who knows? I know one thing though, the possibility of something that big keeps me out of the woods at night lol

I saw the ass of a huge black animal, (probably the size of a large German sheppard but less hair) coming across the bridge in west pea ridge, going from the taco bell side to the jolly pirates side. As soon as I went off the bridge it was on my right and went thru some tall grass down over a hill. I was going at least 35 but it freaked me out for a min.

I'm guessing the "black panther" is more myth than fact in this area. That I know of there has never been a documented black cougar. I believe the closest big cat that can be black is the jaguar from South America. There have been jaguars documented in the southern United States, but never this far north. I would imagine the sightings here are misidentifications and the tendency to perceive the animals color as darker than it is in the dark.

My son and I saw a black cat while driving near Dixie one night. It looked like it weighed about 80/100 pounds. We just stared, then looked at each other with our mouths wide, lol. Truly amazing.

I know what I saw. It was the size of a large dog, with very rounded ears, and it was definitely a cat. I am as astounded as you will be if you ever witness one, it was something never to be forgotten, and no chance of it being a misidentification, we were far to close to the cat.
