Politician first, christian second.Manchin won't support a constitutional ammendment for 2 reason's. 1)He doesn't have the balls to alienate a LARGE number of West Virginian Voters. And 2) He doesn't want his name associated with the republican party anymore than neccesary.

From article:

"The Family Policy Council told Manchin last week that he had until Wednesday to issue an order calling a special session of the legislature or it would actively work to defeat him at the polls next month. "

Is this not a 501(C)3 corporation? If it is then it should loose it's tax exempt status immediately for meddling in politics. Sorry, but that is against the Constitution!

Oh, I forgot, they're republicans so, if they want to do it, then it's legal!

501(c)3's can engage in politics, and even support political causes, the only limitation on them is endorsing or working against specific candidates. If the Family Policy Council actively worked to defeat Manchin or endorsed one of his opponents there might be a question of what they were allowed to do. It's a really fine line between what they can and can't do, but they really have pretty broad latitude in the kinds of activities that they can engage in. What keeps them active in anti-gay politics is that there are no federal protections for gays so they are free to discriminate all they want.

Glad the guv has some courage. He's a man. Treats all of the people of WV the same, even making sure a small group doesn't get picked on for political purposes, too.

I used to live in Huntington in 1979 & 1980. There were 3 gay bars in Huntington when I lived there. Are there any gay bars left in Huntington ?

Yep.The Stonewall is the only one making any money, the others are just getting by. Too bad the Christian right has chocked the life out of this city. It's so bad there is only one jewish temple and one muslim mosk. 125 churches, however.

That Gov. Manchin would reject the religious right that wishes to infringe on ANYONE's right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" makes me that much more happy that I voted for him. I for one am glad that the Governor rejected this group.

I seriously doubt that Governor Manchin's actions are in any way aimed at promoting the cause of homosexuals in this state. WV is protected from homosexual unions, marriages, or whatever you choose to call them. AND, although the state code currenlty defines marrage between 1 man and 1 woman, we are in the process of gathering signatures and working extra hard to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2 years at the next election. We have the presumed support of Senator Byrd, Senator Rockefeller, Congressman Rahall & Congresswoman Capito. Records show that all have supported a constitutional amendment on the federal level. Together, we will protect WV families and send a clear message to homosexuals that their behavior will not be welcomed in our state. This is so important, now more than ever before as the homosexuals have taken to the streets across this great nation. The next thing you know, they'll be teaching their ways to our children if we don't get a handle on this situation.
