I honestly didn't know there was an actual legal age. If anyone knows what it is, please share!

I don't think there's a "legal" age. I think it depends on is the child responsible and mature. Just make sure the child has a phone and knows the rules of the house or set some such as do not cook on the stove, or answer the door, stay inside, etc. My son is only 4 so we can't do this, but I see nothing wrong with it if the child is mature and responsible. And I'd keep it to myself as well lol

There is no legal age on the books. It`s completely situational.
Most feel 12 or 13.
There have been child endargement type charges for children as old as 14 left home alone.
It depends on how safe your child is at home, how responsible, and how resourcefull your child is alone.
In the event something would happen, an investigation would determine if you are in the wrong.

You have plenty of time to educate your 12 yr old if you plan on leaving them at home next summer. A great time for building character thru responsibilities and adopting a positive rewarding system.

The way the world is now days I'd never even consider it. No child should be left alone I know its hard but I would look into other options.

Most parents around here feel like 3 years is old enough while they snort their pills and pass out.

If you call your local DHHR they will tell you how old they can be. I am pretty sure they have to be sixteen.

Daycare's stop taking kids at 12 years old....so I'm pretty sure that's the age they consider it ok. But like others have said...it depends on the maturity of your child, and you need to have a trial period where you give them short amounts of alone time at home to see if they can follow the rules and be responsible. Good luck! I would say 13 is plenty old enough!

Is the house well-stocked with firecrackers, guns, alcohol and lighter fluid?

Have you checked to make sure your internet has no firewalls or parental limits set? Also, be sure to leave credit card info in an accessible place. In case she wants "pizza".

Have you notified the teens down the road that she'll be by herself for 5 hours at a time? You know, those dirty lookin' kids with the bow and arrows, dirt bike and nose rings. They'll be glad to keep her company.

Oh, yeah...have you checked that sex predator map for the state? For convenience, you can be sure there's one near you!

Exactly how OLD is great-grandma? Who will be watching whom, exactly? Is she "hip" or more in danger of breaking one?

Don't get mad, I'm sure you have a lovely home. Just a little teasing to help you think. Seriously, there's no way I'd do it. ESPECIALLY on a private road. Too isolated.

I know that there isn't a "legal age". 13 is fine as long as your child is capable of not catching the house on fire
