I have been on pain meds my entire life. I was classified disabled at the age of 4, from something I was born with. I would rather not describe my issues as they are personal to me.

For the last 32 years, I have worked a meaningful job. I did NOT want to be classified as DISABLED because I am very ABLE to do many other things like computer work. I got a scholarship to Marshall University on the basis of academics (obviously I can't play football).

I have raised my family, etc, but as time has passed I am unable to work now. I'm age 47. My parents were told when I was younger that I lived past my prime. The were told when I was born that I would NOT live past the age of 4 because of my disability. I am not one to let people tell me what I can and cant do. So at age 15 I started working, and I have worked for the last 32 years. I am now on pension with my job, and getting a supplemental of social security disability each month.

My question is this. I have lived out of state for the last 15 years and had a primary physician who prescibed all my meds. Now that I have moved back to WV, I am having a real problem finding a doctor who will prescribe pain meds to me. They want to put me on OXYCONTIN 80mg. I don't want to change what I'm on. I have been on the same meds for over 15 years and haven't had to up my meds at all.

Are there any doctors that will treat me like a human being and not like a drug dealer? If so, names would be great. I'm looking for a NORMAL primary physcian. Either family or internal medicine.

My problem is this. Just because we have a MAJOR EPIDEMIC of people selling, dying, and using pain pills ....THIS SHOULD NOT BE MY PROBLEM! I am NOT a CRIMINAL! I've never been convicted of a crime! I just want the same MEDS i was able to get in Minnesota here in West Virginia.

More information : I also have all my medical documents from my primary physician in Minnesota. I am NOT walking in just telling them this. They have all my medical evidence and medical files but are still not wanting to pick up where I was left off. I went today and was told I would be put on 80mg Oxycontin. This is not what I was on. I don't want to be made to take something new when the old was working just fine.

I understand I will never be PAIN FREE, but I do want to be able to tolerate my pain.

I do not want to be treated like a criminal. The doctor today told me "There isn't one doctor in this state that would give you pain meds for break through pain like your doctor in Minnesota has".. What he was really trying to say was "We don't prescribe that here in West Virginia because it's too easy to sell people like to SNORT them".. THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM!

Thanks,
Chris

Man, I really have nothing to say for that. I hope one day you have no one in your family that you care about who is hit with a one in a 100k disability. I have done my best to be a meaningful person in my life.

I guess everywhere you go, especially on the internet, you will find people like you who care about no one.

You are an insensitive pr**k. I do not want to wish ill on anyone but I do hope sometime in the near future you are faced with the need for pain medication for a very serious disease and then remember STFU! Or of course, you need them now to support your habit/make a living.

First of all, your screen name screams out you're very childish and you can't be taken serious. Its called professionalism. Look it up.
Secondly, physicians around here are victims of the DEA's wrath. They have a hard time prescribing narcotics because of the " EPIDEMIC" that has been going on lately in the tri-state. Most physicians are fearful of being shut down and losing licenses. Why don't you go to a pain specialist and consider a spinal cord stimulator, possible epidural steroid injection or a facet injection? I don't know your exact symptoms or pathology, but from what I understand there are alternative therapies that can be explored instead of popping a pill to get you thru your day. Dr. Ozturk is in Huntington and from what I understand, he is good. If all else fails, try finding a primary care doc that has pain contracts to earn your trust.

PS... get rid of the screen name...

Yeah... I'm 47 years old and can't drive anymore. I know, I hate my life. My mother who is 68 has to drive me around just to get to a doctors appointment. The last time I drove was teaching my 15 year old son how too, and that was not easy for me. I am unable to press the pedals very well.

I never wish my own problems on anyone but I do appreciate you stepping up. Thanks.

about a year ago I was in a major car accident. I have had doctors all over the country look at me about fixing the problem and "the risk to my life" would be too major for any of the things you mentioned. I do appreciate your feedback. Sorry about the name just trying to keep others from getting it.

The contraindications to the "things I mentioned" are minimal such as blood dsycrasias, back rods, infection..etc . I don't believe you are telling us the whole story which is fine. You are arguably displaying what we call in the medical world
"seeking behavior"... Why didn't you mention your car accident in the original post? Good luck in your future endeavors.

Well for one, this is an Internet forum; he probably didn't think he had to give his entire medical history to just ask a few questions.
I have a medical background and I didn't take his post as "seeking behavior". He mentioned that they wanted to put him on OxyContin 80mg and he's turning that down. A true seeker would have jumped on that sh*t!

My question to the original poster is; what med are you trying to get the drs here to put you on that you took back home? You said they want to put you on Oxy 80mg. That's some pretty potent stuff and that's not acceptable?

Get a dr to refer you to the pain clinic at St Mary's hospital. Dr. Caraway is a good Dr. I gaurantee he will look at your prior medical records and consider the same medicine. I know he did that for my grandmother when she moved here from out of state. She had been on very strong pain meds for cancer and the internal medicine docs wanted to start her on some new thing at the time, opana. She got in with Dr. Caraway and was back on the same medicine that same day.

Please by all means, do not divulge a bunch of personal info about your condition or the meds you are prescribed on this web site. There are vultures here just waiting for a vulnerable person to give out info. Next thing you know they've tracked you down and robbed you.

Good luck with everything.

Dr. Feelgood... The OP wrote this...

There isn't one doctor in this state that would give you pain meds for break through pain like your doctor in Minnesota has".. What he was really trying to say was "We don't prescribe that here in West Virginia because it's too easy to sell people like to SNORT them".. THIS IS NOT MY PROBLEM!

Please read the entire story before you post. The OP obviously has break through pain and is not getting what he wants. They offered oxy 80's which is a very potent dose most likely because his regimen back in Minnesota was very potent and the OP is still unsatisfied. That should set alarms off for any practitioner!

Funny how you see junkies all day high as hell from pain pills but then someone in pain is given Motrin 800. A family member of mine is suffering from brain, lung, and skin cancer and is not receiving pain medication unless he is actually hospitalized. When he is at home he is given nothing to take.

If they are offering you Oxycotin those are strong, how would they not help you?

It is unethical to NOT give a cancer patient with metastasis pain medication. They are most likely afraid that if your family member takes narcotics, that they will stop breathing especially with his lung CA. I would be livid!
