you can probably contact your local county department of human resource and they can help you with what you need to do to be eligible to provide foster care. Its so needed and there are many children in the system who needs a home and for someone to treat them as their own and provide a secure home! Good Luck with your search!!!!

There are 2 types of foster care. One is regular county foster care. That means you would only get kids from your county. Reimbursement is less with county foster care than with the therapuetic foster care which is through an agency. The therapuetic foster care agency gets kids from all over the state rather than just from the county the foster parent lives in. Kids through this type agency have more behavior issues to work on, or health or emotional issues, etc. Agencies have training classes the would be foster parent has to take. You will have to have a home study done. That means someone would come to your home to make sure you have running water etc. You will have to have references from family and friends. You will also have to be finger printed and a back ground check done. They take care of the fees to have those things done. It sounds more complicated than it really is so dont let all that scare you. Sometimes when a sibling group comes in to foster care, there may not be a county foster home who can accept as many as there may be. In that case, DCS meaning the Dept of Childrens Services, may call the therapuetic agency to see if they have any foster homes available to take how ever many siblings there are. Sometimes they are put in that type foster care not because of behavior problems but just simply because the county doesnt have a home that could accept that many siblings. DCS always tries to keep the siblings together in one home. Therapuetic foster care has 3 levels- level 1, level 2 and level 3. The higher the level, the more complicated the issues are with the child. The higher the level, the higher your reimbursement will be. Foster care is not about how much money you will be paid, but reality is-the more complicated the issues, the more you will be spending in gas to take the child to counseling. Foster care is very much needed in every state. A lot of the times a foster parent may feel unappreciated by the child but the important thing to remember is: The child may not act like they appreciate what you are doing but you never know~some little thing you do may come to the childs mind later, maybe even years later and that little seed you planted may make a difference in their life on down the road. I hope I have helped you.

Do you know if you are able to just choose what kids to foster? I would like to foster newborns and infants on a temporary basis, like less than a year at a time. Would there be a place for me?

Cindy, infants and toddlers would be my first pick but I am not sure it works that way. I need a number to talk to someone about it. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Also, does anyone know if it matters if you have a job? If I choose to become a foster parent I would have to do daycare. Is that an option?

There are definatly children out there that need good loving homes. Just don't do it for a job! They do pay you but it's not a lot and if you care for the children like your supposed to, it would take what you got to care for children. It has to be in your heart. If you want a daycare, go to link and get certified and just set your own hours and take what children you feel confident about.
hope your good
