What special needs does your child have? I also have a special needs child and he is ready to start Pre-K services but we live in Wayne Co. but I would more than gladly drive him to any Cabell Co. school that offered pre-k SN classes or transfer him to Cabell Co. schools for better SN services once he got old enough for elementary school. Does anyone know anything about SN services in Cabell or Wayne Co.? Also, is anyone familiar with the Waiver program and what you get or are offered with this program? My son is on the waiting list currently but I still don't really even know what it will make him/us eligible for once he gets off the waiting list. My other question is if anyone is familiar with Developmental Therapies and the services they provide/how knowledgeable they are/what to expect, etc. Thanks!!

Davis creek has a smaller population of SN so more quality one on one there. As far for preschool I believe right High Lawn Elementary is the only one in the County that offers SN. I have heard great things about that program to although I have heard the teacher was leaving and going to a middle school setting. Waiver it just depends on what needs your child requires. Waiver helps with outside services from the school setting I am not real sure what all you can get. I do know physical maybe speech services. You might even be able to get transportation and a person to help at home. Developmental Therapy again it depends on the needs of your child. They work along with Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Until they see what the needs your child may need they do a variety of therapy from writing skills to basic exercises to strengthening exercises. They provide equipment your child may need in school. If your child has a wheelchair they provide some services for repairs. Most of the people who I have meet are very knowledgeable and do care about the quality of care they provide. They also work alongside teachers and classroom Aides to provide services for you child they provide training as well.

Small community there almost everyone knows everyone. Most parents are really involved. Lots of support both ways. What else would you like to know?

Waiver has a lot to offer someone. Just make sure you go with a good agency. Not sure about Wavier with children as much as I am adults. I can say if I had a child with special needs I would absolutely get on the waiting list. They provide a lot of different services to to family as well depending on the amount of help you need.

Developmental services are very good. And they work in the school system too. They care about the kids.
Their serveral new wavier agencies that open up one in Wayne and one in Milton.
Mainstream sucks and will cause you to lose wavier.
SN preschool is about play and too many kids for your child to learn anything. They would do good in a reg. preschool learning from their peers if they have main skills walking down and feeding themselves. Our Sn preschool need change its not early intervention its just child care. The benefit is Ot and Pt. Speech is better its one on one thatn group. But you fight for one one one. And if it at Highlawn dont bother getting it. She saids she sees your child on paper for 30 and its 10 min. my friend timed it.

Even if it is 10 minutes it is 10 minutes they would be getting. If you wait until they are in Middle school a lot of development is lost. All you have to do is know when your child is going and pop in if your child has an IEP then tell them you will talk to your advocate about your concerns. Most of the time it works.

What agencies are available and are best for waiver? I've heard horrible things about Mainstream from more than one person and I hate to hear that because SN children and adults don't need anymore problems to deal or contend with. My son isn't able to walk or feed himself yet; he can't communicate well yet either but he is getting closer. Are there any particular services or places/schools you would recommend because we are pretty lost in what we need to do and who we need to contact or get services through and we've had a lot of trouble finding anyone able or willing to help us. Thanks for your time.

PS. I have a lot of trouble dealing with my son's issues and therefore constantly fight depression and feel isolated because I don't know who to talk to that knows what I am going through. I've heard about a group called Moms in Common but all I've been able to find out about them is they have a Facebook page and I don't have Facebook so I don't know how to contact them. Do you know of any support groups or people/agencies I could contact (and how to contact them) that could help? Thanks so much!

I will try to get you some information. How is old is your child? Does he already attend a school of any type? If not when will he start? I know a few people in support groups. Not being Nosey but do you know what your sons diagnios is? This way I can get the best information I can for you. Start with Autism Services. They may be able to help you get you started in the right direction.

Did your child use birth to 3?

I was going to suggest birth to 3 even though your child is too old for their program, they can point u in the right direction. My son had mild developmental and speech issues. We used birth to 3 then I took him to marshall for continued services until he went to kindergarten. He had a medical card at this time also. He went to highlawn for preschool. He wasn't in the special needs class but his class interacted with the special needs class quite often and highlawn really took good care of those kids. I hope this helps.

To SN Mom: it is a very difficult thing to navigate trying to get assistance for you and your wonderful child. DTC in Huntington does a great job, I work with their therapists daily. Birth to Three is a super help. Pre-k Special needs classes assist with very basic skills. I personally teach moderately mi and autism. I teach K-5 and all areas of learning needs from academics to independent living skills and more:) I don't normally comment on these things but I feel I was led to this one. I am at DC elementary if you would like further assistance:)
