Can they not get even ONE decent instructor in this place. It's dirty and outdated. What are they doing with our member fees?

I can answer that - your members dues paid for and continues to pay for the new cool pool, new whirlpool, new mens and womens shower rooms, new pool floor, new equip in the pool for handicap access, new mens floor in the men rooms. new unisex and handicap changing and shower room, new fitness equipment, new spin bikes, paint, electricity, water, gas, telephone, cable in both lounge areas for men and women. Soap, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, maintenance equipment for repairs. Night cleaning crew who cleans the buildings every night 10 pm to 6am. New roof to replace old leaky roof. New motor for warm pool. New flat screens for fitness center and lounges. Postage for monthly billing, paper, envelopes. Washer and dryer repairs and detergent for cleaning towels. Floor mats and cleaning costs. Printed material costs. Maintenance for steam rooms and saunas.
Payroll for employees who manage the May building, Phil Cline Building and the Kennedy center. Payroll and maintenance of soccer fields, baseball fields and other youth programs. Fees to the city for renovations. 100,000 dollars in memberships given yearly to all autistic, disabled and families in need. And much much more.
Hope this justifies where your $1.25 a day goes.

This is kinda petty, but general dues shouldn't be paying for detergent and washer/dryer repairs, since that's why they said they raised the price for my "silver star" locker/towel add-on.

Do you realize the Y pays about $60,000 annually in gas bills to heat the building and water? Imagine the electric bills. Imagine the water bills. A facility this size doesn't come cheap.

Also, what's outdated? In the fitness center, nearly all the cardio equipment is new or no older than three years old. The Nautilus equipment is always kept in good condition. Downstairs the equipment is new or fairly new with the exception of some equipment that has been around for years but which happens to be maintained so well it doesn't need replaced. The floors on the basketball courts have been refinished in the last year or so and are periodically refinished.

When folks complain about the Y, I wish they could sit in George's office one day and listen to the petty complaints that come through there and try to put out the fires he and his staff have to deal with. It's pitiful what people think is unacceptable. You're going there to work out- NOT DINE!

If you don't like the YMCA, why have a membership. Buy your own equipment, pools, hot tubs and watch your own kids while you work out at home. Stop getting on topix complaining! Most people are happy with the service they receive and for the few who are not..well figure that one out yourself. I'm sure they will always have enough members to stay open with the few complaining ones gone!

I'm not a fan of giving memberships to families in need. I work hard and pay my fees. I've seen feces in the shower house at the Glenbrier, watched the cheese float off a 400 pounder in the hot tub. The Glenbrier has turned into a darn zoo!!!!! I do wish another choice was available! Until then, I hope they cut back on the families in need or do a better job of giving out memberships! Many YMCA members are not happy, but remain silent. I see a huge drop off in memberships if the current trends continue.

In order for the Y to maintain it's nonprofit status, it must give out a certain number of memberships to those in need.

I'm curious to know how you know the feces and cheese are coming from these members. I've seen paying members urinate in the showers and worse.

Most importantly, get off you high-horse and realize that you're created by the same God as these folks, which means you're no better than they are. Thank God that you have what you have and pray that the needy can become prosperous as well.

Why are YOU in George's office all day? Isn't he busy putting out fires?

Seriously? That's what you took from that? I mean, seriously??? How did you ever come to such a ridiculous conclusion?

I know many people who are switching their membership to the Marshall Rec Center. It's nicer, newer, provides better 'scenery' and you don't have to put up with the riff-raff that the Y allows in.

That's what you said, isn't it? That you sit in George's office all day and listen to complaints? Sure sounds like it, since you know every single one of those complaints.

"Most importantly, get off you high-horse and realize that you're created by the same God as these folks, which means you're no better than they are. Thank God that you have what you have and pray that the needy can become prosperous as well".

Being poor does not excuse them of defecating in the shower or poor hygiene. God may have created us the same, but rewarding failure only lessons the will to succeed.

The membership fee for the Marshall Rec center is $540 a year for alumni. I will be cancelling my YMCA membership at years end.

First, trjnhrs didn't say anything about sitting in George's office. And I didn't say anything at all about knowing every single complaint. I did. But trjnhrs was correct in calling you out asking how you came to your conclusion.

What I said was, "When folks complain about the Y, I wish they could sit in George's office one day and listen to the petty complaints that come through there and try to put out the fires he and his staff have to deal with."

Nowhere did I ever say I sit/sat in George's office all day. I was creating an imaginary scenario in which a complainer would wear George's shoes for just one day and listen to what comes through there and all that he has to deal with.

I manage a business and I've listened to others in the same position. Believe me, people come up with some off-the-wall stuff.
And the Y is no different. That's all I was saying.

"And I didn't say anything at all about knowing every single complaint. I did."

The "I did," should have come before, "And I didn't say...." (Poor editing.)

The biggest problem the Y has is their mostly worthless employees who for the most part do nothing but hang out and text on their cells when they should be working.

Go in the weight room and watch these d-bags sitting there for hours staring into their cells. Somebody could die in there and they would be the last to know.

Plus too many of these lazy arsses use foul language. Just last week I overheard a conversation between a staff and a former employee and their language was horrible. I have heard other staff sit around a swear just in general conversation. And I thought this was the Young Mens Christian Association?

Half the time the staff in there won't even speak to you. You could walk in there and scan your badge and 2-3 of the do less dweebs would be sitting behind the front counter and wouldn't say hi or bye or go jump in a lake.... This has gotten better the last year but in the workout areas ya got mostly 20 sum then employees just walking around trying to look tuff.

The ya got this whole gay video feller about a year ago. WTF ever happened to him? They were supposed to ban cell phones in the mens locker room but they can't/won't enforce it. Just last week I witnessed a male member standing in front of the clear plexiglass shower stall door and he was openly taking pictures!!!! And why in the hel would you design a shower room door that is clear and see thru so that one can see right in there???!!!

Then ya got this female trainer about a year ago who was carryin on with one of her clents on site. She defied all attempts to stop as the administration was too little too late and weak.

Then ya got this riff raff element in there. A perfect place for them to hang out and ruin it for decent, paying people. I mean the thugs that go in there are downright scary especially when the lazy staff have no idea what is going on. And don't bother asking a staff for anything that might require them to get off their butts cause you will usually get little to no help. They hire too many kids then don't expect anything of them.
I am sick of the place.

The YMCA is probably the most efficently operated business in Huntington!!! It is very clean and the staff is always friendly and helpful. The one thing that bothers me, are the spoiled people who care not for anyone, but themselves. I am shocked to read any negative comments about a place that we are so fortunate to have! The YMCA is a state of the art facility and we as a city should be thankful, NOT CRITICAL of it. The staff is far from LAZY, or foul mouthed! YOU SAY YOU ARE SICK--i BELIEVE THAT! Seek help with your vision along with the theray you sooo need Jim! Grow up and quit telling lies!

I couldn't agree more. And most of them are Huntington High students or just graduated from there. They don't care about anything. I would get rid of the little punks and hire some decent help.
