Inbreeding is really the wrong thing to focus on in this situation. The history of the coal miners in West Virginia is much more interesting.

The Battle of Blair Mountain was one of the largest civil uprisings in United States history and the largest armed rebellion since the American Civil War.[1] For five days in late August and early September 1921, in Logan County, West Virginia, some 10,000 armed coal miners confronted 3,000 lawmen and strikebreakers, called the Logan Defenders,[2]who were backed by coal mine operators during an attempt by the miners to unionize the southwestern West Virginia coalfields. The battle ended after approximately one million rounds were fired,[3] and the United States Army intervened by presidential order.

If I am not mistaken the US government actually bombed their own citizens for the first time during the Battle of Blair Mountain.

Researched family tree (parents both born WV -Pine Grove/Alum Bridge,,,Ruble/Alfred) Found missing branches on Ruble-side directly with mother(Ella Sue).Wonder if I look similar to Gary Nolan,as I remember how odd he seemed to me when 1st & only met at Bert Rubles'(papaw) death...didn't say as much as "boo" to my younger brother Mark, Disenfranchised myself from Ken Alfred family well before the research result.Shame of family sucks, but must be dealt with squarely!

One time when we were teenagers i walked into the bathroom to pee one morning and my sister was naked getting in the shower. She welcomed me to join her and i did her in the butt. She was afraid of pregnancy. It would have been hard to explain.

I have been doing my Granny Zella Mills'(b.Loup Creek ,Fayette County, WV in 1897) genealogy and for her family, there is significant inbreeding. She has the same great great grandparents 4x over.
One of her grandmothers is descended from first cousins on one side and the aunt of the first cousins on the other side, Toneys all. They are from Boone and Fayette County in Southern WV first coming to WV before it was a state from Franklin VA.

It would seem that most of the inbreeding in the hills took place mostly in the 1800's when families were very large with lots of cousins living in an isolated area. To perpetuate the stereotype at this time is just to put people down, a cheap shot.

I have 3 second cousins ( all siblings ) in another county in WV who are inbred. Their parents are second cousins. 2 of them actually turned out alright. One is a nurse and one is a coal miner. The other one was on drugs really bad though and living with his grandma the last time that I heard about him. Inbreeding is not good for many reasons but it happens in many places.

I have always heard this also from older family members who grew up there in the old coal mining days. It wasnt like it is now.

I would also like to know if there is any truth to it that can be backed up with historical evidence or first person testimonies..

There's no more inbreeding here. The GOP voted to have all of incest outbreeded.

Hi, I have ancestors from West Virginia and I want to do an essay about the state for my history class. I have always heard that West Virginia was bad for inbreeding but I can't find many articles about it on the internet, at least not ones with the kind of info about it that I need. If anybody can provide some links or info about this, please do. I would really appreciate it. I also need info about the history of coal mining and country music in West Virginia too. Thanks.
States like West Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama, and Mississippi have been hit the hardest by this sort of accusation.
Inbreeding of some sort does occur in isolated communities due to the fact that the pickin's are slim.
It's mostly just cousin marriages.... usually more distant than 2nd or 3rd cousins. This sort of thing isn't uncommon in any isolated community anywhere else in the world.
Hell! Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin - both highly regarded scientists - both married their first cousins and no one gave them any shit for it.
It's just fun to bash the southern states in the media.
It's the price we've been paying since the end of the Civil War.
It doesn't help that the education in the state is dismal. Just look at some of the posts in this forum. If it isn't slut shaming some poor uneducated girl or making broad-sweeping generalizations about blacks or some other minority or some long-winded blow-hard religious type bitching about the sins of homosexuality, then it's right-wing, get us nowhere politics.

I seriously do NOT thing inbreeding is any sort of issue except with the Mormons and illegal incest which happens unfortunately to girls sometimes. The inbreeding in only ONE branch of my family in WV happened over two generations in the early 1800's. I think any discussion to the contrary is all about sex perverts on the site who are trying to get titillated or people that are isolated and unaware of reality.
