West Virginia sports fans are equal-opportunity offenders – they will hurl insults at anyone while attending any sport. As such, 34.9% of opposing fans in a 2009 Sports Illustrated survey peg those in Morgantown as the Big East’s rudest. Athletic director Oliver Luck has received complaints about the atmosphere at football games, and basketball coach Bob Huggins – a WVU alum – has been on the public address system more than once in recent years to tell fans to stop throwing objects on the court. In fact, a Pittsburgh assistant was once hit in the face with a quarter.

But Mountaineers fans don’t just treat their “backyard” neighbors poorly. They’ve been known to hurl obscenities at any opponent, referee or opposing fan. WVU fans have been scolded by Morgantown’s mayor for being so profane at basketball games that their blue language can be heard during national television broadcasts.

But that’s all child’s play compared to what the Mountaineer faithful are best at – setting things on fire. According to GQ – which described West Virginia football fans as “Mad Arsonists” and ranked them the third worst sports fans in America behind only Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies fans – WVU fans set 1,120 blazes from 1997-2003. The magazine said there were 120 ignited to celebrate a football win over Virginia Tech in 2003 and 60 more in 2005 after an NCAA tournament win. They even torched couches after the death of Osama bin Laden. Imagine if they actually win a national championship.

Well, we know what will happen. There will be fire and beer in abundance. WVU allows used to allow reentry to football games when fans left the stadium to continue tailgating at halftime. Why? There were no beer sales inside the stadium. Luck is planning to change that, reportedly saying that allowing beer sales in the stadium will curb binge drinking since they now have alcohol on demand.

The collective reaction of those who know what the Mountaineer faithful are capable of with more alcohol? A groan, sigh and then pang of fear.

Only in West Virginia.

They're going to get worse as their football team starts to become a doormat in the big 12. Who wants to play for a school when all your away games are thousands of miles away.

Holy hell, man. At least try to find an article more recent THAN TWO YEARS AGO.

I don't know why the Marshall faithful should even care about this since the "Friends of Coal" series has ended.

How many did you win? Zero.

Oh, now I see why you're digging up old articles slamming on WVU. I'd be hateful too, if I was 0-12.

Isn't it interesting that as WVU's cycle goes up and Marshall's goes down they play, but when Marshall is up and WVU is down they do not. Coincidence?

A mediocre (7-5) WVU beat Marshall when they had Moss and Pennington. That was in 1997. I guess you forgot that one. And do you really think that when this series was conceived, back in 2005, that anyone knew how either team was going to perform, eight years later?

Actually, I did not copy & paste this post this for the reason of reliving score history. WVU has a better athletic program than MU, so what? Doesn't give them carte blanche to be assholes, of which SI claims they are, and what my post is about. I dont care about the rivalry between 2 schools I never attended.Marshall was not mentioned in my post.

Being a Mountaineer fan, I can say that they have their fair share of idiots, but so does every other D1 football program. This usually occurs with the students, and it's unfortunate. However, you bring this 2-year old article into the discussion like it's a newfound discovery.

So, I suppose that because of students' drunken behavior, I'm supposed to not be a fan of the program? Or because SI wrote a side-tracked article on the subject should make me like them any less? The fact is, regardless of whether you favor them or not, WVU is the flagship university of the state and represents us all.

Your slamming of WVU because of drunken students would be the same as me bringing up the fact that Marshall football won the Fulmer could a few years ago.

But, you probably wouldn't want to discuss that.

Actually, it's the students AND older people who act like nut cases. I've been to a few WVU games, one I went to actually root for WVU and the others were against Marshall. Even at the game where I was there to see WVU play, I was no where near the student section. I sat where the friends and family of the players sit. The things that came out of their mouths were awful. I couldn't believe it. That was my first experience in Morgantown. Next up was against MU. I had on my Marshall shirt and got screamed at by WVU fans of all ages. Even old men who had to be in their 70s! I can't leave out the fact that a group of WVU students AND other older men ran up to us, as we were simply walking, and they threw their glass beer bottles at us. A group of ladies doing absolutely nothing.

Please don't blame all of the idiotic behavior on the students because it definitely isn't just them! Just realize its a HUGE majority of the fans that don't know how to act like they have any sort of class.

I'm not going to call you a liar, but I haven't witnessed behavior like that at any of the games that I have attended. And I'll still stick to my original statement that it's a minority of the fans how engage in that sort of behavior.

But my point is, this whole article (and original poster) is nothing new. To those of us who enjoy Mountaineer sports, the overlying message of bad fan behavior does nothing to influence support.

And that same behavior does nothing to change what has happened in the MU/WVU series.....

So, my question is, what's the point? The series has ended and there are no talks for renewal.
Tis a Fact

Ha! Call me what you want, but a liar I'm not. It happened right as we were walking to meet more friends. There were porta potties right around where it happened, I know because we had to go into them to dry ourselves off.

If you must know, they didn't just throw the bottles at us, some of them (including females) ran over to us and poured the beer on our heads. It made for a great start of the day! Not.

Again, what does this have anything to do with Marshall? As stated previously, some people actually talk about this subject simply because it makes our state look bad.

It has EVERTHING to do with Marshall when their starting QB was wrapped up in an assault on a female (with a beer bottle).

Frankly, I'd like to know why Savage comes to this board an regularly bashes Marshall? I don't waste my time going to a Who board or MoHole Topix (Do they have one?)and bash the Eers. You must be one insecure little dude.
Get over the rage and chill out. If MU means nothing to you, leave and move on.

BTW, The 97 game was MU's first in D1 football. We had 65 scholarships as opposed to 85 for a full D1 team. If you really knew sports, you'd know that.

WVU fans are the worst. Burn couches, beat up pregnant women, etc. They are hicks, New Jersey kids who couldnt get into Rutgers, PA kids who couldnt get into PSU or Pitt, so they come to MoHole.
MoHole turns coeds into drunken whores and frat boys into drunken idiots who give the state a bad name. Bye!

I've already explained why I come here, multiple times. And this thread completely reflects my reasons for being here. Marshall has never been able to beat WVU on the field. Quite frankly, other than maybe a couple of games, they weren't able to even be competitive.

You guys came onto the D1 scene as a pretty good program, and started beating the war drum calling for a game with WVU. You got your chance in '97 (65 scholarships is an excuse), and lost with Pennington and Moss. Pruett continued to call out WVU for several years until it culminated in the "Friends of Coal" series, using lines such as "if yer' skeered, git a dog". All the while, he allowed the program to commit multiple NCAA infractions.

So you got the series you all wanted and prodded WVU for years over, and you lost in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The series has ended, and yet you guys are still prodding.

And you wonder why you get visitors like me?

The rest of your post is nothing but personal opinion and negativities. I could put together a much longer list of what ails Huntington, but I don't think I have enough time.

Um, so, how does a topic of WVU being the worst fans have anything to do with Marshall? Weirdo.

Uh, yeah, please explain. WVU and MU are two different schools. This thread is talking about WVU fans. Where do Marshall fans come into this discussion? It's totally off subject.
