That place is a joke...the city should put a new crew in there or shut that place down....only a fool would take donations there....the employees take what they want from the donations .... the staff is two faced and do what they want...they we're audited this year because of missing money....and if they were that desperate for money then they should have taken the $2300 for the horse they have that the director refuses to adopt out ....and before its lied about no the horse is not a part of a pending case like they tell everyone!!!
If you actually knew what you were talking about you would know that since they are not only funded by the city of Huntington but also Cabell & Wayne county they are required to be audited every year, and have always been right on the money, otherwise they would lose their funding, you can call your county commission office or City of Huntington and they will tell you the same thing! Also if you think you could do a better job then go after the job yourself, just go to a council meeting & let them know how you feel instead of just putting false statements on topix which in no way helps or hurt the ones that really matter...the ANIMALS!!!!!

I didn't make false statements ... that place is a joke... and it's not helping the animals was my point... there's no reason for Daisy the horse to be there when 4-5 people has offered high adoption fee's that would greatly help the other animals that are in that place...I know she was in bad shape when they received her...but they have done their job of getting her healthy and well for her to be able to be placed in a forever home...and I applause them for their time effort and love that went into her care....but she needs to move on and not allowing her to be adopted isn't going to help her....?

The media needs to do some investigating at this place. They have a new director that isn't taking advice from people that know what they are doing. He was the director of waves of Fun before this and has no animal experience. He is kicking out volunteers calling them trespassers. I think he's intimidated and trying to get used to his new job, which I get, but he has a mess to clean up and needs to take advice. The vet they have advising is taking all the spay/nueter business for herself. She and the new director are in there due to political affiliations. Not that they aren't good people, but it's fishy. I've heard the shelter is dirtier that its ever been. On a positive, they are treating sick animals better.

I volunteer there when I can. If you hear that it is dirty, and care so much as to comment on the place, then you should come down and help clean in your spare time.

Treating sick animals better that's funny the sick ones pile up in the back in feces and get infections from being spayed/neutered and thrown back into a dirty cage. Its not humane to throw a cat in a small cage with no litter box food or water. As far as political yea there trying to cover everything up which is why no volunteers are allowed. They have like 10 animal attendents now all of which are scum of the earth smoke weed in the shelter and are all jims friends. Though the place didn't smell great before at least it got cleaned and that was with only a few animal attendents. Nor is it humane to throw a dog and puppies in a cage and don't clean it till it has maggots crawling all over them. You all are worthless scum. And shouldn't be there

Look, the answer to every complaint can't be "if you dont like it, then go volunteer!"

There are a set of standards that the shelter is supposed to adhere to, and they are not being met. There's a ridiculously unacceptable number of young dogs being diagnosed with distemper after leaving the shelter, resulting in the pup being put to sleep. There's some serious things going on there, and no one will step up for them.

I have no idea what qualitfies Cumm in the first place, but he does not need to be in charge of that shelter. How can you give propper care to X number of animals if you can't even keep your own paperwork organized?

Every cat or dog I've ever had has been a stray. Some have come from the Shelter. I recommend it every time someone is looking for a pet. But things need to change in a bad way, and it goes way beyond volunteer work.

Its about time you all see what jim cumm is. And all his pot smoking nasty mouth jail bird friend is. And how a lady brought in a baby bird and he said he would take care of it. Well he did he throw it in the trash can out front and let it die. So dont take anything to him he will kill it and i do have the pics of it. I want all of u to know he is not what he says he is but he loves to get feathers tucked in his hat.he said that himself well they need plucked out fast. He doesnt care about the animals. The news has pics of all and chose to help cover it up. Right dave benton. Nancy and cris have seen them and once again covered it up. So where do ee go now.

They told me that the $60 adoption fee goes towards reimbursing the costs of keeping their animals healthy. That's weird since the puppy I adopted had kennel cough. Kennel cough is preventable, it comes as a nasal spray. Sooo, what care was he given while at the shelter that cost $60? That place constantly has something going around.

Saw a dog catcher throw a Boston terrier into the cage so hard it got hurt n screamed n the bang was super loud when it hit. Was at the vet last year and there was a boy beside me crying because the dog catcher came to his house yanked his dog out of its kennel and beat it so bad it broke a bunch of bones n I'm pretty sure they had to put it down and they had to pay 50 bucks to the pound to get the dog back out. The dog catcher didn't even get the right dog. The boy had 2 German shepards n dog catcher got the one that hadn't even done anything. All the dog did in the first place was get out in the yard off the leash. Pretty sure the pound is closed for now due to some kind of outbreak. Also every single do I've gotten from there has had kennel cough and fleas

You are such a liar. That story isn't even believable.
We don't have a dog catcher running around at random. The only way the will pick up an animal is if you call and report it as a stray or vicious. Even then half the time they don't show up.
If you think the shelter is doing so poorly get off your hide and head down there. I am sure they need volunteers, they always do.

Things I know due to 5+ years working at shelter before I left to make better money elsewhere.

Anita was a great person to work for,did not always agree with her and some of her decisions. If a violation of law was seen then we warned owner,if repeated then animal picked up or ticket issued. If complaint was something legal then not much could be done. Nothing can be done if no law is broken or was not seen.Just because you think you know what is illegal does not make it illegal. Cleaning was done in morning between 8-10 and as needed during day. Euth was done by a shot into vein and usually quick and painless. Euth was done as needed, the was weeks when euth was not done at all, then sometimes we had to do it everyday. I know one year the number of animals euthed was over 10,000. They do get audits every year. Anita was going to retire, had been wanting to for many years due to a health concern. The shelter gets very little support from community or those in office. When cases went to court nobody ever wanted to testify. I have seen cases thrown out because judge "know that guy and he cares for his animals." even with video evidence and vet report of abuse. The pay sucks. I would average 500.00 every two weeks after five years of working there.

I can not speak of the current staff never met most of them. I have heard some bad things from a employee used to work there and still does.

Any questions ask and I will be truthfull if I know answer,if I don't I will say so.

I worked at that shelter for over six years, under Pat Thomas. The shelter was run right. Now it makes me sick to go there and see the horrible shape that the shelter is in.

They threw a live puppy away in a plastic trash bag. They thought it was dead. their excuse was Euthanasia Doesn't always work. I helped with thousands of them they always worked. That poor little puppy would have been thrown in the garbage truck and smashed to death if the city worker would not have found it.

How many dogs were still alive and thrown into the garbage truck.

I know for a fact Greg Iseli and Jim Cumm are both liars. They run around pretending to be police officers. and then get on TV, saying how could you treat an animal like that.

There are several lawsuits being filed against the shelter and at least three of the employees.

If people would take care of their animals and be responsible then this place wouldn't be needed. I've heard people dump their dogs at the dog park at night bc it's checked every morning and they are taken to the shelter. These people should be charged and fined. They would fine you if you dumped a bag of trash somewhere though.

I heard that too, but then I heard they take animals and ship them off other places that do euthanize, just so they can say that they don't euthanize anymore. So I'm not sure.
They may have been banned. The director Jim Cumm tried to kill a puppy and put him in a trash bag, when the city worker went to put the bag in the garbage truck to smash it he found the poor little puppy still alive in the plastic bag
