I just got my ebt snap card in the mail today, I have never had assistance before, I don't receive welfare or any other benefits, I do not do drugs. I am a young mother in her twenties who quit her job & went back to school so I do not need to be attacked. It came in the mail today, it said the available balance was nearly $1,700. I bought something little at Walmart just to be sure, the receipt said there was $1,690 left. Surely they aren't giving me that much per month. They also sent me a letter saying they need verification that I do not pay the bills in my house so I didn't even think there would be anything available on the card until they received verification. I am just wondering if that is to last me the rest of the year or if I really do get that much per month? Please help.

How long ago did you apply. They back date to the day when you first applied. That could be for more than one month. Just call your worker.

They backdate from the date you applied. It's probably for 2 months, because thats usually how long it takes. But it also means you probabl have a lot if kids. lol

No, that's the thing; I only have one child. The backdating makes sense, thank you for the help.

They sometimes accidentally overpay and then demand repayment. I would call caseworker for breakdown of benefits before I spent a bunch of it. That seems like a crazy amount for someone with one child who does not pay the bills in your household as you stated. To be on the safe side I would call and make sure there wasn't an error.

HA!!! I have worked since I was 14 years old & had two jobs while I was pregnant. I have more than paid into government assistance & am using it for all the right reasons: because I need help to feed my child & because I'm going back to school to get a BETTER job to provide for him. Oh shit, should have mentioned that I worked full time & took prerequisite classes up until now & took care of my son. I have to take a lot more classes now to graduate earlier so I can't really have a job right now. I shouldn't feel like I needed to explain my situation to a loser like you but ya know, I'm a hardworking woman & I'm damn proud of that.

Thank you for mentioning that because I was actually afraid of that so I only spent $50 on necessities this weekend. I called & I got a card a few years ago but never used it & shredded it because I found another job. They backdated the pay all the way from 2011 & are letting me keep it so I guess I'm okay but that's way too much money for my son & I to use anyway.

Sounds like the only hard work you have done is on your back. Probably on your knees too.

As a taxpayer, I do not mind giving a young mother a helping hand if she's trying to better herself. This young lady is in school, so I say more power to her!

Honey, you don't owe anybody an explanation. You're taking care of business, which is more than many who receive assistance do. Best of luck to you in your studies.

Thank you SO much for the kind words. I felt bad even applying for food stamps because of the way people think of you but we need to eat & this time next year, I will be a certified RN so I can provide for him the way he deserves!

Not everyone abuses these benefits. Some people actually need them due to a lay off or going to college you a hole

Then leave the country fool. You don't own this land. We stole it from native Americans. Go back to the caucus mountain region.
