Pure Innocence, I see you had Margaret Sortet for homeroom at East, she was my aunt. I remember her teaching me how to swim at Riverside over in Ohio. She was quite a lady.
You might not know it but Margaret was married to Wilbur Sortet he was one of the original Pittsburgh Steeler football players, playing from 1933-1940. He went to HHS and WVU, Margaret went to MU. Both Margaret and Wilbur died in the late 1990's.
I grew up in Huntington till my family had to relocate to Va due to a job change. I spent my early school years at Miller and Cammack Jr. Lived on 9th ave, near HHS. Did come back to Huntington when I started college at MU.

Someone mentioned Neirman's Pharmacy on Norway Ave. Does anyone know my cousin Paul Arthur? He made deliveries on his bike and I think his graduating year from HEHS was 65.

Someone else mentioned Morris Brumfield. Did he have a market on 20th St and the corner of 4th Ave?

The produce market at the foot of the 6th street bridge: Do you remember the watermelons floating in a green tubs of ice, and how good and sweet they were? And the half-runner green beans, and the sweet corn grown across the river? My mom (Ruby Walls Clarke) and dad (Elvin Clarke) and I would go there on Friday with our poke baskets and fill them up, and then go home and shuck the corn and string the beans for a big feast on Sunday afternoon. My relatives from Logan would come down and spend the day. What great memories!

I remember Jake Brumfield's meat market and grocery on 20 st and 4 ave. He butchered his owm meat in the back of the store, I mean it was brought in on the hoof. Also the bars, Virginia corner and the Neon grill. also up the street was Mootz' sunbeam bakery and Iva's grill. The fat boy drive inn was across 6th ave.

That's it! it was Jack Brumfield. How about Boney's down on 6th Ave and abt 19th I believe. Back on 20 th st was El Gato later called The Varsity or Big Green maybe.

christmas time at mootz bakery was great with Santa and the Sleigh with Reindeers. My old church 20th st Baptist is gone now. I remember when the Pizza Hut on 5th Ave and 21st st opened. There was one night a week (I can't remember which night) but it was all the pizza you could eat for 50 cents.

I went to 20th st. Baptist church. Melvin Hyers was pastor there. I got married in the education bldg in 1964 by Mr.Hyers. You may have known the Wileys or Mr. Brady Burger who was the best sunday school teacher I ever had.

Yes i remember the Wileys and Mr Burger. I went to school with Mr Burgers daughter Felicia, he had a son too but I can't remember his name. I also remember other families such as The Mannons, Castleberry (he was a fireman at the 20th St station on 3rd Ave) Pattons. Lois Merritt was always a big presence there, I sang in the choir and she was our instructor.

That was such a nice church with so many families coming for every service.

While I was at East Danny Clark was football coach along with Dink Allen. Aldo Paletti was basketball coach. I think Dink came from Barboursville. Gene R unyon probably went to Oley or Enslow, Ensign was an elementary, no football team. I went to school with him probably at oley. Super nice guy but tough. Danny I feel I crossed paths with you somewhere, seems like you know alot living in Huntington and the name sounds so familiar.
Yea, Dink Allen came from Barboursville. I didn't even know he had coached at East. He was the head football coach at B'ville for a long time. I played for him there in 1978. That was my sophmore year. We went 0-10 and that was Dink's last year as coach, but he did go on to teach for a while longer. He is still around and lives in Barboursville. Has to be 200 years old. Good guy.

Gene Runyon is my brother, he played at Enslow, and I think Dink was coach there. Gene than went to HHS 59-61. Allen was coaching at East the one year that I went there (62-63) He recruited me to play there. I broke a finger just before the season and couldn't carry the football, so couldn't play halfback.

Allen was a great guy.

Hi, folks!

I'm Andrea Copley-Smith, online editor of The Herald-Dispatch.

For the past few months, we have been scanning our old archive photos from the 1930s, 40s and 50s and putting them on our website. Below are the links. Feel free to browse through them and see if you could help identify any of the photos.(If you are able to identify any of the photos, please email me rather than just posting here.)

Also, I have started an email group to alert readers when a new historical photo gallery is posted. The emails include a link to the newest gallery.

If you would like to be included in that group, please email me at acopley@herald-dispatch.com.

Thanks!
Andrea

Here you go Old Timer, Another Old Timer and Storyteller you might be able to help her out with the old photos from Herald Dispatch. I looked but couldn't pick any out, but then again I was born in 1953 and most of these I would have been too young.
