If your kids are into sports at all, HHS is the way to go, in the last 5 years the school has produced 2 pro basketball players, numerous AAA and AA baseball players, a few soccers stars etc... But good luck either way
Don't go to Huntington High. The whole atmosphere is completely different than Cabell Midland. Many have said they don't feel safe going to that school. Also, give me a break about sports. 2 pro athletes? I'm sorry but Huntington High sports are a joke. They are destroyed by midland in baseball, football, soccer, track, cross country, and wrestling. The only reason midland lost in Basketball to Huntington high is due to he low black population at midland. If we had two 6"11 star athletes on our team, we would have won then as well. Also, other than those years, midland now wins the basketball games. Academically, midland is also superior on their test averages and overall gpa. So if you want an athletic child, a future scholar, and overall safety with top of the line door locking mechanisms and cameras, go to Cabell Midland High School
Wow, so now you are being racist? Thanks, that will make them want to go to midland. 2 baseball players from class of 07 are now in minor league ball working their way up, a few soccer players still play competitively, more than 2 good athletes came out of that class. And OJ is no where near 6'11" try again
Yes, race matters in sports. Look at the NBA, what is the white to black ratio? Basketball is a black dominated sport. Not being racist, just common sense. Also, I will go ahead and say that we should agree to disagree on sports....(no matter if Midland has won more state championships or not)...and say that the main reason to choose a high school is safety and academics. I grew up in Huntington, I go to Marshall, and every year the safety issue gets worse. Do I still walk around at night, yes. However, I am constantly watching my back, and I'm a big guy at 6"3 240lbs. Huntington is not what it used to be, and anyone will tell you the high school is just as bad. There are no drug, violence, or behavior issues that go on at cabell midland. There's the occasional fight, but never once did I not feel safe their. I also received an amazing education receiving almost a full ride to Marshall with the Promise and Presidential Scholarship. Basically everything except housing. I'm In Premed as well and just made a 3.7 gpa this semester. All I'm saying is that, when it comes to your child's education, safety, and overall well being, why risk it?
As a side note, I have many friends from Huntington High. Although there once was a rivalry for me between our two high schools. I now feel like Huntington high and Cabell Midland share a common enemy...WVU
so you picked the one sport that blacks dominate the ratio. You failed to mention the ratio for hockey, golf, tennis, and even baseball. Bottom line, all schools are going to have trouble makers, it all depends what kind of crowd your child falls in with. If you don't feel comfortable with either school you might want to look into st. joe

Huntington High hasn't produced anything. Look at the yearly graduation rates in the Herald-Dispatch. CM usually grads between 90-95% of the seniors. Huntington usually gets 78-82% out of HS (most drop-out).

CM has better everything. Best sports (track, cross country, baseball, football, best academics (numerous ivy league students and 1 student who made a perfect 1600 on the SAT), and best arts (show choir, band, orchestra, etc).

Both schools are under the Cabell County BOE, but Midland produces smarter students. Just look at grad. rate and the star students (and where they go to college).

CM wins.

All three of my children went to HHS and all graduated from that school. I hate it with a passion. I have no inside knowledge regarding Cabell Midland, but I would send my children anywhere BUT HHS if I could do it over again. It's a horrible environment from the moment you walk in the door. The secretary that greets you in the main office is one of the rudest people on the planet (and btw we've gone through at least two different secretaries in that office as my children went through there and BOTH were equally as rude...it must be part of the job description).

There are a FEW decent teachers but most are horrible...mean and hateful to both students and parents. My husband and I are highly educacted professional people. We didn't enter the school or contact the teachers in a negative manner, but we did want to be involved. The teachers just saw any question or concern we had as an intrusive. It was impossible to have any working relationship with them.

The academic standards are pathetic...even the Honors classes. In fact, some of the Honors class are the worst because the teachers are so arrogant about the fact that their class is "HONORS" and confuse quality with quantity. They just give a ridiculous amount of assignments that are meaningless because it's an "HONORS" class.

And then there is the student body...good heavens! I don't know what type of young adults make up Cabell Midland's student body, but my children went to school with hard core violent thieves and drug dealers who carry guns and shoot police officers, women, each other, etc. They destroyed my children's academic classes and made. They control the school. The principal acts as if he controls it, but he was the most ridiculous of all...strutting around the school like he owns the place.

Yes, there is a small population who are successful at overcoming all the obstacles they face as a student at HHS, but if I had it to over again, I would never send my children to that school. I think there are very few people in that building who even like kids much less know how to teach them. Run, don't walk, out of that district.

I went to both n had the most problems out of Midland. Too easy to sneak out of, skip classes n smoke. Never tried at HHS so it's probably easy too. Wouldn't put my child in either one of them to be honest.
