When you are dining out at your favorite restaurant with your family or that special someone, and are given good service, please keep in mind that the appropriate tip should be 15%-20% of your total bill. If you cannot afford to leave 15-20% of your bill, then you cannot afford to eat out where tipping is expected. Thats the perfect time to hit your local Taco Bell. Every server in this area earns 2.13 an hour (every cent is taken for taxes). Your server depends entirely you to make their income. Most restaurants make their servers tip out 2-3% of their total sales to the hosts, bartenders, bussers, etc. What that means is that when you dont leave a tip your server is actually paying to wait on you.
If you are one of those unfortunate souls who frequently dines at the same place and are a poor tipper, rest assured that you have a reputation. You are talked about in unflattering terms, called nasty names, and at some point your food has been tampered with. possibly dropped on the floor intentionally, sometimes sneezed on, you may be eating with silverware that has come from the dirty dishes, or worse...much much worse. Your server will have been warned not to waste time giving you good service because you dont tip. that server will instead spend their time providing good service to the guests that deserve it.
And, I cant stress this enough...Dont be rude or a b!#ch to the person who is handling your food. There are few things that are more stupid. I know of someone who had a rude guest and was forced to go to the employee restroom and dip some water out of the toilet then pour it over the guests food. All of the servers crowded around a neighboring table and watched this horrible woman eat toilet water. There was a smile on every face. She had it coming...And everyone who waits tables has had a guest like that at some point. So please, dont be rude to someone who is handling your food. And tip the appropriate amount for good service, because if you dont, you WILL be remembered. And steps will be taken against you

I'm pretty sure you are informed of your hourly rate when you except the job. So either suck it up or find another Job.

I always tip for excellent service, and that is the only time a tip should be offered. Why does someone deserve extra for just doing their job?

Do you tip the guy at the garage that changes your oil? How about the guy or girl that bags your groceries? Better yet, how do you feel about paying Doctors? Ohhh, bet I hit a nerve there!!

ANYBODY can serve me eggs and bacon on a plate, not many can SAVE MY LIFE!

You only tip for excellent service? They get payed $2 an hour expecting compensation through your tip. They know the hourly rate when they get hired, but they also know you should tip after you have your meal delivered to you. Don't be a prude. Maybe skip on the "free refills" of soda or tea and give that extra $2 on the tip.

Not surprised a bit that you people would do that. Your maturity level is on par with the rest of the 10 year olds and servers in this town. Youre there to serve the customer not the other way around. You obviously dont have the intellect or stress adapting abilities to mentally handle a simple waitressing job,..and you obviously suck at it or you wouldnt be complaining of low tips...Hopefully you havent harmed anyone with your immature toilet water stunt. Intentionally hurting someone is crime. Intentionally hurting someone over a tip is psycho....Perhaps you should check out taco bell yourself, its more suited to your skillset, which is zero.....grow the fuck up and stop expecting rock star money just for bringing me a plate of tater skins.

Oh ignorant ones ( especially you, Ranger Bob): the job IS the tips. The legally truncated hourly wage is there for tax purposes, not actual income. Food and beverage service industries in the USA are unique this way, even to most other countries. So comparing them to " the guy at the garage" or "doctors" who obviously are NOT set up that way, is completely ridiculous.

A top is part of the price of a meal in the US. We pay servers directly. If you don't tip you are not paying the full price of your meal.

Would you short you doctor 15% every visit? If you don't want to tip, eat fast food. I am not a server.

Poor service = poor tips. It keeps the bad servers in check. Do ypur job well and be cimpensated well. Don't like how it works? Go into another line of work. Preferably one that pays you to have a poor work ethic. You're entitlement attitude will get you far in life. Actually, you just may wanna wait tables the rest of your life.

When I come into the restaurant and you are working as a waiter or waitress, please remember an few things. As I am seated and waiting for someone to talk my order, please don't walk by me like I don't exist. If you are busy, at least have the courtesy to tell me so and tell me you will be with me shortly. And don't ignore me simply because you are not working my table.

Please take the time to learn the menu, so when I ask a question about an item, you have the ability to explain it.

Tell me you have run out of an item before I take the time to order it.

Please leave your I phone at home or in your pocket. It is amazing to see the number of bartenders and wait staff with their noses buried in their phones, completely oblivious to what is going on around them.

Tell me your name if you like, but please leave your snarky, too cool for school attitude for your hipster friends.

Don't make me chase you down to get my check.

Earn your tip, do not believe that you are entitled to it because you are gracing me with your presence.

If I come into your establishment and get bad service, I will give you one more chance. If it happens again, I will exercise my right to vote with my wallet and never enter your establishment again. Enough people feel this way, because bad service seems to be the downfall of most of our local restaurants.

I tip for good service. and if my service is shitty because you spend your time talking on the phone, posting on topix, facebooking or whatever, it deserves a bad tip. if you fail to deliver, I will fail to tip.

And your 'you WILL be remembered' comment; who cares. If the service is that bad where I dont tip, I wont be back for more shitty service or extra sauce or whatever you plan to do in retribution for not getting a tip previously.

Threats are always a good way to make money. Idiot. If you don't like the pay structure, then don't work in foodservice.

You get $5 no matter how good you are, how bad you are and no matter the cost of the final bill. More than likely servers get food stamps every month which is coming out of my $83,245 gross income for the year or they live at home with parents.

I know Applebee's downtown has went to crap. Most of the waiters/waitresses are awful. They have certainly lost my business and I used to go there 3x a week. I don't know what is going on there, but the last time I went in there at 6pm there wasn't even a wait. I think its slowly on the downfall. Im sure Im not the only one who thinks over the last year this place has gone to crap.

Also wanted to mention that a rule of thumb is to tip anyone who personally serves you. For example:
Cleans your room
Carries your stuff ( luggage, groceries , golf clubs....)
Grooms you (barber, nails ...)
Serves you food
Parks your car
Shines your shoes

You get the idea
