<quoted text>Yes but as people say you generally have more than one table ; so that would equal PR exceed minimum wage. Hopefully your chosen career at MU Will afford you access to a better job and better pay. You are just handing some food and drinks...nit exactly a toughie! If so, reevaluate who has the problem
Have you ever been a server? I was for many years before I went to nursing school and I can say that it is a very tough job. You are on your feet constantly. It's not just taking food to someone's table. If that's what you think then you obviously haven't ever waited tables.

I was a server, and then an RN for over 20 yrs...(serving meds, bedpans,), I was good at both. But in this generation of young people who feel so very entitled, many think half assed attention deserves a tip to make up their wage, that is not true. You may be on your feet, but it is a skill: knowing when to be attentive, knowing when to allow for privacy, etc., just like a 'good' nurse---anticipate a persons needs. They should not have to always ask!!
You need to be willing to really put yourself out there to expect tips in a struggling economy.

The total cost of a meal at a restaurant does not (and should not) directly correlate with the tip. The cost of your food rarely reflects: effort, work, and hospitality a server puts forth. Percentage based tips and the employer minimum wage loophole are archaic.

Here's a simple example. Take a server at a local cheaper place where a meal might only cost $6 - 10. A generous 25% tip is $1.50 - 2.50.

Move to a more expensive restaurant where a meal costs $20 -$30, now we're up to a $5 - 7.50 tip at 25%.

Did the person at the more expensive location really work harder, provide more hospitality, or require more expertise? I rarely, if ever, see this happen. Instead, you wind up paying more for less service and shaft servers who work hard. Smart servers that like to work the already broken system will gravitate to high tipping locations.

Look at a local chinese buffet as an example. These servers work their behinds off. My plates disappear almost instantly as I finish. My drinks are refilled before I'm half way down. What do I see people tip at these locations?$1 - 2 usually. That makes a lot of sense doesn't it? On the other hand, most places I pay $30+ a meal, I end up waiting 15 minutes for a drink refill, yet they're entitled to a greater tip ($8)!? Feel free to explain why this makes any sense.

Furthermore, I'd like to point out that without enough people tipping, generosity of your customers doesn't help you, all it helps is the business. Servers may be paid $2 - 3 hourly and required to report their tips as part of their wage. If their base rate, say $3/hr, plus their tips are less than minimum wage, the employer is required (by law) to pay the difference. What this means is that the employer pays AT MOST $7.25/hr. Most of the time they get off scot-free and pay the employee nothing over their base rate ($2/hr - 3/hr) since customers pickup the tab.

In another case, let's say after tips an employee earned an average of $6/hr. The employee will only make $7.25/hr total. The tips do not add to the money they made. The business will only pay the employee an additional $1.25/hr, costing them only $4.25/hr (using a base $3/hr rate) while customers pickup the additional $3/hr to meet minimum wage. Your tip was essentially a donation to the business, you might has well handed it to the owner instead.

Who always wins in this situation? The business. Who (generally) loses? The customer and sometimes, the server.

Here's an idea, require employers to pay their employees minimum wage like most businesses do ($7.25/hr), translate the additional costs to reducing expenses/overhead or adjusting food prices, make all the customers pay their fair share (let's not be greedy and wait for someone else to pickup the server's tab), and THEN allow customers to tip their servers based on their performance.

I went to Roosters ONCE and ONLY once!! It was absolutely terrible worse I've ever had service, wait time, staff and worse of all the food!!! Just Terrible I will never go back I complained so they gave me some coupon cards, through them away. Staff was way to worried about mingling with each other and the groups of youngs guys there to take care of two career people and their kids, much less than 10% was given that day.

My family and I go out to eat about once per month. By the time we pay $50 or more for our food we CANNOT afford to tip 20%. We usually give at least $5. I do not feel obligated to tip much more than that considering how expensive everything is. I do more home cooking and packing snacks with us when we go somewhere. We are going to the beach and yes we will take groceries with us and may only eat out a couple of times while we are there. Just to expensive these days. I am sure a lot of families that are on a tight budget will agree with me. As far as Josh Do you think he should tip more just because he is on TV? They have to make a living as well.
Well, here's a tip for ya. If you can't afford to pay for your meal or tip appropriately, stay home and don't eat out. It's just that simple. Yes, food is expensive, but the employees aren't setting the prices. How about instead of shorting servers, speak to the managers about the prices of the food? Don't take it out on the servers simply because you're so cheap.

so I waited table for years while in college. Stupid job, but paid the bills... guess what I took what I could get. Some days are good others suck. Get over it. If you depend on someone to tip you then you take what you can get... if you hate the idea that people don't tip well then get a job that provides a steady income... OR if servers demanded higher pay then maybe things would change... I mean seriously the owners are the ones making money not the server. Don't complain... if you do then maybe you get out! be happy you have a job.

servers generally make a little over 2$ an hour and are lucky to see $50 on their 2 week paycheck due to taxes taken out. I was one who chose to work my way through college waiting tables. Josh from wsaz isn't the only news person who is a crappy tipper, I think bill Murray took cake on this matter. A colleague of mine waited on him one evening, excellent service was given, and he told her he had to go to his car to get cash for a tip. Needless to say, he never returned. If you choose a profession that's in the public eye and set a bad etiquette example, you deserve to be called out on it...just saying

The very fact that a server came on a public forum to personally chastise a customer BY NAME over a tip should tell u something about the entitlement attitude of our local servers....That in itself speaks volumes...

Here's a tip.... If you tip bad I wouldn't go back to that restaurant. We all talk about it once you leave and you will be remembered. Not saying something bad will happen, but do you really want to take that risk??? I sure don't. I tip way over every time I go out to eat. If I don't have the $$$ then I don't go out to eat. It's simple!!!!

A good tip is15% not 20. Despite what waiters say it is and always will be 15%.
10% used to be the standard back in the 80s. Maybe his beau is an older gentleman and left the tip without knowing the latest on tipping.

Good service is now 15%, excellent is 20%.

The truth of the matter is that servers are not exactly performing brain surgery. They're not even preparing the food, for cripes sake.

So restaurants should just pay the servers minimum wage or close to it, like any other employee, and do away with tips altogether.

I do not see your point.

Do brain surgeons also expect tips?

The purpose of the practice is to give servers an incentive to smile, get quick refills, etc. Why would they go the extra effort if they got paid the same whether the service was good or bad?

Too many of you wrongly view it as a way for the restaurant owners to pay the servers less. That was not the intent of the practice.

Apparently this is a foreign concept to you, but they should make the effort because it is their job to make the effort.

The word tips is an acronym for To Insure Prompt Service, which has absolutely nothing to do with whether they smile or give drink refills.

Given that we live in the technological age, wherein meals are prepared very quickly, there is no excuse for a meal not being served promptly; ergo, there is no longer any reason to pay extra to the waitstaff, just to get them to do their jobs.

So now the speed at which the kitchen sends out food is up to servers? Makes complete sense. If your food is late getting to your table, it is probably the kitchen's fault and not the server's.

You base your assumptions at how one should service you and what tips really mean on a false assumption. "Tips" is not an acronym, it is a backcronym.

Check out Snopes for the etymology and its synopsis of why you are wrong:

Why do people have to get on topix just to lie? You trying to tell us the servers take home peanuts because most of their check goes to taxes? You must've been fired from "serving" and probably failed college for being dumb enough to even suggest the servers paycheck mostly goes to taxes. Please don't breed, we don't need anymore morons 'round here.
