Why is it the shelters place to support someone or a family, that chooses not to work? Their choices for not working can be many, but is their truly a valid reason for not working? I personally think not. The mission also needs to charge these folks, because if not they would never learn to help themselves. As for not feeding these folks very big portions, whats their complaints, if they want better then they need to buckle down and do better themselves. I have driven past where this Mission is and you see these homeless folks around town, and I have yet to see one look like the ethiopians with ribbs sticking out, as the ones you see on TV. Also, if you don't like the potion sizes served at the mission, maybe you could take them into your home and feed them better. See how well that $200 per month pays all the utilities, their rent and their grocery bills, then come back here and tell us the results of your experiment.
You are a moron, you think all of us that stay at that place just 'don't want to work'?!?! You're one of the biggest fools I have ever had the displeasure to discover in my life. I am a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I was in military intelligence in the US Army, I had a top secret security clearance from the US government and I opted out of the military. When I get home, I can't even find a freaking job at a McDonald's!!! The problem isn't the people staying at the mission you brainless, self righteous fool! The problem is that nobody in the Huntington area will give a job to a person when they see 624 10th ST on the address line during the application process! You own a business? Would you hire a homeless person?! Because none of the places around here are willing to do that! I have been trying every day for over a year to find a job that I can actually keep working at, not a place that just wants people for seasonal work, so that I wind up right on the street after christmas is over, and I haven't found a single stable job opportunity! Nobody will give us a chance to work for them, I know, I've been trying! And when people staying at the mission get in trouble because they went to church instead of being present for a RANDOM drug test that they had no clue was coming, and the person in charge looks at that person and says "I don't care about your relationship with god, because in the mission, I'M GOD!" Who are you to say that these people are offering us real help and hope?!

If someone who works at this place happens to make a post, please keep in mind the fact that THEY WORK THERE. Of course they're going to be biased, I have stayed there, I don't do drugs, I don't drink aclohol, I don't fight with people, I don't run the streets asking people for their own hard earned money. I am NOT a bum, I won't even get food stamps because I don't want to take that, because I find other places where I can get enough food so I don't starve to death, I spend every waking moment on my feet looking for a job. I can't find anything. Nobody will hire me, and you want to know the number one reason I have been turned down? "It says here on your application that your address is 624 10th Street, isn't that the city mission? Well, right now, we're not able to hire you, our store is over employed, we'll call you when we have need of you" How am I supposed to find a job and get out of this place when nobody wants to hire a homeless person? I'm not even dirty, I wear nice clothes, I shower everyday. I'm not incompetent, I actually happen to be fairly intelligent. I was kicked out of the city mission when my college schedule conflicted with the schedule that the mission had for me to do what they wanted. I WAS IN SCHOOL!!! That doesn't matter to these workers and these 'men of god' Who cares if you're going to college if you can't sweep the floor in the dining room because you have to be at your psychology class? How about the fact that I have to be in school instead of going to the welfare office to get on food stamps the way the mission wants me to? I don't need food stamps, that's not important, my college classes are important. Did this matter to them? Not in the least! I have seen more drug addicts and alcoholics have a place to stay at the mission in the past year than I care to admit, but on the other hand, someone who does NONE of these things and is trying to better themselves by getting a COLLEGE DEGREE are the people with whom they have they biggest problem! It's a scam, plain and simple, they take the people who get disability checks and don't care AT ALL about what they do, cocaine, heroin, weed, drink. It doesn't matter, because they still get that $200 a month from these people, but they allow them to stay there because they know they'll spend the rest on drugs and NEVER get out of the mission, which means, for as long as that person has to stay there, they're getting paid by them. Then you have someone like me, who spends NO money on drugs or alcohol and I'm going to college, I am the kind of person that gets kicked out of the mission, because I have a chance to become stable and they don't want that!

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Are you able to go back to school? There are alot of programs that can help with furthering your education. There are also classes that you can take that only last a few months that will at least get you a job. Cabell Co EMS gives EMT classes. KDMC gives EMT classes for free. No it's not a dream job, but it's a steady job that pays the bills. Once you get a steady job then you can get into college and get a degree and a career. Good Luck!

Sorry, I just saw this post. I'm sorry that they treat people this way that are trying to better themselves. Wishing you luck in whatever you are majoring in. Maybe you can use your experiences to help others once you finish your education.

I know your pain! All they want is their money! All homeless shelters are greedy!

I lived there for 9 months. Went from desperate and hopeless to thriving and blessed. I paid to live there, that's the rules. Taught me what I needed to live on my own when I left there. Guess what, my landlord wants paid every month too!! Only he wants about $500 more than they did! I know that the staff there is compassionate and helpful but it's a hand up, not a hand out. It always blew my mind to hear people complain while I was there, knowing that their next step down was the streets! I was grateful for a warm place for me and my kids while I started the rebuilding process. The staff at the mission are overworked and under appreciated. They go above and beyond for those that want to help themselves.

I read your last 2 or 3 posts. I believe you and I agree with you. I know you're angry, and I hope your situation improves soon. I want to say thank you for your service.

That being said...I have a small piece of advice that I think will help you. You mentioned Army Intelligence and Top Secret. Please don't ever mention that in Huntington again, at least not publicly. If you mentioned it during any job interviews, it probably hurt you. Here's why...

Huntington is bursting at the seams with ex-Navy Seals, Black Ops, Seal Team 6, Special Forces, Kung-Fu expert G.I. Joe Sgt. Rock bullshitters of the highest caliber. Per capita we have the highest percentage of men who have been specially trained to kill in secret government bunkers in the nation. I believe here in Huntington there are three currently claiming to have personally put a bullet in Bin Laden's eye. If all of this were true, you'd think this dump would appear more squared away.:)

I believe you did what you say. You're too literate to be full of crap. But I suspect in a first-contact interview, if you've said this, an incorrect assumption may have been made about you. I'm sorry that a bunch of liars are out there smearing the sacrifice of our servicemen, but that's the situation here. Best of luck to you, and Semper Fi!

Nah, I am way too intelligent to metnion that on a first contact interview, not only does it not seem impressive in this area, but it also seems like boasting to an employer, and ego tends not to go over too well during a first impression.

First off, I want to personally thank you for your service to our country.
Secondly, and I don't mean any disrespect by this, but your claim that you have tried to find a job for over a year now and no one will hire you because of having the city mission address on your application is a crock of crap. I don't buy that.

If you honestly went out every day from 8am-3-4pm and start putting in applications, you would have a job in a matter of days if not hours.

Im sorry, but your post is full of excuses.
When you sign up to stay there you are agreeing to their rules of random drug testing, so the only real reason to get pissed off about that would be, not because they are interfering with your God, but more than likely because you have dirty urine.

As I said, I honestly appreciate your service, but you have to do more than put in one application. As bad as this economy is, when I've lost a job due to layoffs or cutbacks, Ive went to work SOMEWHERE doing something within a matter of days.
It may not be what I want to do, but by God, it buys me a loaf of bread and keeps my kids fed until something better comes along.

I truly hope you find something soon. Get off the "I am ex military, the world owes me attitude" and you'll find something, IF you're honestly looking.

Again, good luck.

You can find the info on the Cabell Co Ems web page. I think the next class starts in January. It is $600, but you can make payments. When I took my Emt class it was $75. But that's been a long time ago.

Huntington City Missiom is very good compaired to other missions in the country. Huntington gets alot out of the people who come to Huntington just because of its mission. Those who stay must sign up for H.U.D. and food stamps, ect.

If these people at the mission had to do Just a litttle bit of work on the out side it would be empty. But then it wouldn't be free anymore, Grip about a drug test, 200 a month if u have a little job, That doesn't even pay for your stay for the month get real people, get a job, get off your A@@, and get a life !!!!!!
