Employees at the cabell wayne animal shelter have been in and out of the hospital since Thursday due to being exposed to hydrochloric acid without protective gear or respirators. New director Jim Cumm made employees scrub down all cages and floors with the dangerous chemical while he stood idley wearing his own respirator. Employees were not given their own protective gear nor told whatt they were cleaning with until after the fact. At least 4 employees have been affected and treated not knowing any long term damages and given time off work. Also at risk are all the countless animals left inside to breathe in the fumes, which can cause major respiratory problems. Iam letting this truth be known because its being attempted to be covered up, and that's not right just to save the New Director and County Commision from having to go through the process of workers compensation. I feel for those people who were at risk and not given proper safety gear or training, and now are sick, and also all those innocent animals who were left 3 to a cage in the garage for the remainder of the weekend. Please remember these people in your thoughts and prayers.

The new directer is a idiot and the fact that he let this happen and didn't even get everyone out shows he don't care instead everyone had to walk around still in the building. The place is a mess and I've heard about animals setting in cages without water food and covered in crap and maggots cause he has everyone busy with his agenda that the animals are getting negleted. He will probaly get by with it.

So...wait a sec. New director, right? Heavy duty cleaning ( finally) of kennels, right? With such caustic chemicals, rust couldnt survive. Right? Then...this same person lets maggots thrive?

Check.

Your own body produces hydrochloric acid, and it is in household cleaners as well. As a frequent visitor to the shelter, the plain fact is, it needed a cleaning that, no matter what one used, would have created reactions that could easily cause respiratory irritation...because urine and feces DO THAT.

Still, depending on exactly what was used...and no one is providing the name of the cleaner for some readon...proper ventilation would be necessary. I am glad, though, that someone apparently saw to it that an industrial strength cleaning was done ( if this really happened). Now if the sanitation is maintained, there will be a lot less complaints about sick animals.

Frankly, having read the news in recent months, these complaints sound as though they have more to do with a vendetta of some kind, because again, as a frequent visitor, the cleanliness has improved greatly recently. It is sad that so many people in Cabell and Wayne dump their dogs, and a shelter will never be a happy place, but for the first time in a long time I see improvement.

He only worries about the front being perfect where people walk through the back is full of animals and people isn't allowed there so he don't care what it looks like that's where the maggots were. As far as cleaner no I was down there a few days ago and the outside runs were full of shit. And no one has a vendetta people actully went to the hospital.

A few days ago, you were there. Was this before or after the incident in the opening post?

Akw it was both it has been that way since the vet has come and jim cumm he needs to leave. He does not care about the animals or the people that was there before he came they always did a great job and the 6 that were left are wonderful people. They need all of us to go to the court house and complain and hit the news and paper and don't forget facebook. We need to tell what we know.

Not only have the employees been dissappointed with their new director, but new director Jim Cumm said an employee was to unfit to work with public and gave her a makeover gift card in front of everyone and told her to get fixed. He is very dirty and vulgar and anyone who works at the shelter can verify both of these stories on here. He is very rude and disrespectful but yet claims to be a christian. He also hired his work release buddy Matt there to keep him out of jail for child neglect, when a great worker was let go a couple months ago because they said there was no longer going to be an animal attendant pposition there. Now was that true or did he just want to get his worthless buddy away from jail? Good job Director, Mr Dumbass

I personally was there thursday while they were cleaning to look for a friend's lost pet. I was impressed that the shelter was actually being given such a thorough cleaning because it really needed it. i've been there several times in the past few weeks and met the new director and he seems like a really nice guy who cares about the animals. i've also noticed that some of the really rude and uncaring people who used to work there no longer work there. On thursday when i was there the dogs seemed lively and just fine. it didnt have that stagnate urine and feces smell that it used to have. the cats were moved to another room in the back and they seemed like they had been receiving a lot more attention since they weren't so attention starved when i showed up. I think Mr. Cumm is doing a good job and making good improvements.

Agreed, it desperately needed it, and really there is no way to thoroughly clean accumulated urine and feces without producing some unpleasant and yes even irritating odors. Your post goes more along with what I have noticed.

According to these people, though if you were there Thursday, you should have passed out from the fumes or been attacked by maggots!

Yeah, i didn't see any maggots, nor did i need hospitalization from the "harsh fumes"...

the ammonia in animal urine causes much more harsh fumes than cleaning supplies.

Have you ever had first degree burns on your arms or in your throat from acid? If no, then shut your mouth!

Well good then, I don't have to "shut my mouth". I suppose minor irritations weren't worth giving animals clean, sanitary kennels. At least, to some people...presumably some of the same people that preferred having animals live in filth...

Hopefully, conditions don't return to being so bad, but if they do, I can assure you there are plenty of us in the community wiling to endure a little discomfort to help the director create healthier living conditions for the animals.

Yes, this is quite obviously a personal vendetta.

I've used industrial strength cleaning supplies before, and I've cleaned many an animal mess. Never have i had first degree burns from it anywhere on my body, let alone my throat. Maybe you should stop drinking it..

Personal vendetta all the way. Someone is mad because they had to actually do some work at the shelter instead of letting the animals live in the squalor and filth they've had to deal with in the past.
