I used to have a great time there during skin to win. Oh the memories. Bar scene is nothing like it used to be. I see that building on my way to work and I always think that I would love to buy it, fix it up and live in it, but its such a wreck now :(
Love it

I'm too young to have gone there when it was open, but a couple years back a friend and I squatted there. We stayed there throughout the winter and summer of '06. They had all kinds of record players, albums and strobe lights still there. We brought heaters and everything. At that point, the electricity was still turned on and it was actually kind of comfortable. We slept on the pool tables and cooked meals on hot plates.

I'd love to have been able to see what it was like when it was open.

I use to LOVE the 1896 club..it was a great place to hang out back in the day..skin to win..lol..it's been ages since I have even thought of it..ahhh the memories..we use to get games of quarter bounce going also..dance the night away..had great times there..my bff got so tore up that she fell and broke her ankle..and wouldn't even leave until it closed..alcohol deadens the pain for a while, I suppose..lol..thanks for bringing this topic up!

I went to that club all the time because they would sell beer to anybody. Our mayor from the 90's (Jean Dean) had to property shut down permanently because of all the complaints of underage drinking and because the Marshall Univ cops were always busting up fights out front. Those were the good old days when we still had "cruise avenue" which is now Pullman Square. I miss the old Huntington. Now its just full of drug dealers, prostitutes, and pot holes.

Yes It was a real bar
If you wanted to relax and have peace you went upstairs (third floor) thats were I mostly stayed. I would play the juke box and shoot pool and enjoy the 10 cents a beer nights.
the main floor usually had crappy live bands, like the really really crappy Aaron Miller band (god I wanted that band to have a horrible car crash) so the main floor I just got my stamp and moved on or used the mens room.
The Basement had a big dance floor and a dj and was were you had to fill your 10 cents a beer cups
this was a great place to find a nice slim drunk girl after you were done relaxing upstairs.

Does anyone remember the mirrors on the ceiling in the basement over the dance floor? It would get so hot in there that condensation (sweat) would start to drip from them. I never thought much about it at the time but it was pretty gross. Lol

That block looks terrible since the building is in ruins and you have that Hillbilly hotdog junk yard heap across the street. Makes huntington look worse than ever.
