Does anyone else care that a simple thing like the siren going off at noon has become such an impossible job for the City? Because of the views of one of the Council members on it disrupting his sermon on Sundays, they do not follow the requests of Citizens of Huntington. In my opinion this shows just how much they don't understand the Citizens they are supposed to represent. Timers make the job as simple as setting it and leaving it. So what did they do take a hammer to it?

Really? Now the siren being off is someone's fault too? I noticed it wasn't going off at noon every day, and I for one, am glad. It was a little useless unless there is a storm. And I honestly haven't seen the people of Huntington very upset over losing the siren. Most people have more important things in their lives other than that.

That's my point, it's just a simple request from people in the area who were raised here and do understand that it means home. I can guess you do not know what tradition means nor do you care about anything that holds some History for this town. Just little things but they are all slipping away because no one cares as you put it. It's not that they don't care, it's they are tired of being told their requests are useless.

It amazes me how they say it interferes with church, yet their lying cheating and scandalous ways don't? How do you sit all week and lie manipulate and scheme your way through life and sit in church on Sunday . Makes me sick

How do you jump from a siren conversation to scandals and lying? Back to the actual topic.....I was raised here, I understand tradition and history. I have been involved in the history of this town as much as some of you. But do you expect to get every 'simple request' that you ask for? You are not children, you should understand that just because you stomp your foot does not mean you get your way.

"Stomp my foot" please........give me a break. The siren is supposed to operational due to the "Early Emergency Broadcast System" for the town. And they had it on a timer, there is no reason they can't let it sound at noon is there? Maybe spite because they know it does irritate many for their choice of not letting it sound. Acting childish? Yes, I think you called it except it's not the Citizens acting that way.

From what I hear some of the pastor's members are not too happy with him being on the Council and of course the ones that thinks he walks on water don't want him to feel uncomfortable by them being at the Council meetings.
And since this council member has a personal interest in the Siren sounding or not, he should have excused himself from the discussion over the siren. Maybe the church members should get past the Preacher and see the Councilman and what his votes have cost the Citizens of Huntington.

Since no one cares about the City Siren sounding at noon, I'd like to know if there are people who care. If you know me and where I live or you pass by City Hall, HONK YOUR HORN! I want to know the siren does matter to the Citizens. And if you travel by a Council member's house honk for them too. Since they troll this site, they will get the message.

I placed a Poll up on the Siren question. Please let me know how you feel.

The siren in question is a landmark for the city. It was originally used to alert the members of the fire department that they had a call to go to. As time went by and the use of radios increased, the siren became less of a needed item. A few years back, the city spend several thousand dollars repairing that old siren for use as an early warning device to alert for storms. I to became so use to it going off every day that I didn't even know that it had ceased. If anything, the siren should be sounded once a month for testing purposes. If it is sounded every day, everyone becomes accustomed to to it and will not notice when it is set off for a real emergency. Other cities do a monthly testing of their sirens and it works well for them, so why do we need the siren sounding daily? I'm not here for the mud slinging but I will say that the siren does not need to become dormant again. A once a month testing will be just fine, that way everyone can get what they want. Flame me if you must, but that is the way I see it.

For me it is a reminder of the History of the town. It makes us different from every other town. If I am outside and it sounds it says, all is right with the World, silly maybe but for a moment all is good. And we do get used to it going off, but if it sounds at a different time, everyone knows something is wrong. I just hate to lose this one reminder of what we had here in Huntington.

Somehow I had missed this thread until now. The one word title without Huntington is I think maybe is the reason many have missed it.

Lamar Tinsley had a great sense of and appreciation of Huntington HISTORY AND TRADITION.
When he was elected Mayor I was one of many that asked him to restore the siren sounding at noon. He told me it was on his list of things to do, and he did.

To address preacher Denby's (alleged) complaint about it disturbing his sermon. His sermon SHOULD be completed by noon so church families could be getting together for Sunday Dinner.

There are programmable timers that can be set to do all kind of things everyday or only on certain days. That includes the option to NOT SOUND THE SIREN ON SUNDAYS.
Now with that problem solved, lets get back to sounding the siren each noon except Sunday. Once a month is not a sufficient test, but the daily sounding isn't about testing as much as it is about restoring a past tradition that many of us grew up with and still enjoy.

And the protocal for sounding a "DANGER" signal is a warbling or up/down multiple sounding, not a one time sounding.

This is more of the reason that citizens raised and schooled in Huntington and/or with a generational connection and a deep appreciation of Huntington's past should be running for Mayor and councilperson.

AND citizens should be sure and support and vote for them.

No one that doesn't meet this criteria should ever be elected to city council.

Yikes! I didn't ask about the siren! Does anyone know what the problem is with the siren? It has been over a month and there has been no "monthly testing" being done either. You know the Federal Government isn't real happy about their suggestions not being followed, especially with Hurricane season here.

I made id a point to be sitting in Brookshire parking lot from 11:45AM to 12:15PM on Mon 8/27/12 to see if it sounded, and it didn't.

I was disappointed.

It seems the City Council and BM have decided that having the siren work on a timer daily is beyond their abilities, and they don't want to confuse us poor simple minded Citizens who can't tell the difference in a noon sounding and an emergency 3 soundings. So they are saving us from the confusion. Don't you feel relieved we won't be having all that stress of not knowing which siren means what. I mean for how many years did the siren go off not only at noon but for fires and emergencies? I guess we just can't handle all that thinking now a days, let's see one for noon, two for fire, and three for emergency. Yes that's just too much for us simple folk. And the siren is another thing no one calls them and complains about so call Willie Ricks, Andy Spivey, Keith Malone, Frank Harris, Lamar Denby, and Mayor Woolbright. Let them know you have noticed the absence of the siren.

Just wanted to bring the Siren back into the conversation. This one situation shows the Citizens of Huntington just how much the City employees and Council care about the City, it's History, and it's people.
