My guinea pig just died of kidney failure and I was feeding him Kaytee foods. Does anyone else have a guinea pig/food problem like this?

We just lost two healthy guinea pigs in 12 hours. They've been eating the Animal Farm Bonanza Bounti-Buffet For Guinea Pigs made by Hartz. I'm wondering if their deaths are related to the food.

We have had our guinea pig for many years. On Sunday we bought some new Timothy Complete Guinea Pig Food by Kaytee and he was dead by Tuesday. This is a different feed by Kaytee than we normally use. Kaytee said they wanted us to send the feed to them so they can test it. I was reading about acetaphin(not sure of spelling) but is derivative of folic acid used in cancer drugs and rat poisoning and has been showing up in pet food and causes kidney failure.

To those of you who lost your guinea pigs after feeding them Kaytee, what were the symptoms when they were getting ready to pass? Mine was paralyzed and could not move his lower body. I thought he had had a stroke. I could feel the electrical impulses going nuts in his lower body. Did you have a vet diagnose the kidney failure and what were the symptoms? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My guinea pig has been ill since the beginning of October. I purchased Kaytee Timothy Hay Complete Guinea Pig Food (I noticed a difference in the color of the food), and 10 days later, my guinea could not have a bowel movement. I rushed her to the vet, and x-rays showed the undigested food in her stomach. He put her on a Lactulose (stool softener) and Cisapride (motility) medications.
I have been dealing with someone at Kaytee who told me there have been no reports on any of their products, and specifically, Kaytee Timothy Hay Complete Guinea Pig Food.
Have you been in touch with customer service at Kaytee? If so, please contact me. I'm in the process of sending back the bag of food for quality testing. I've asked for Kaytee to absord the cost of my vet bills because I discovered two differences in the ingredient list noted on the bag which is different from the ingredient list noted on the Kaytee website. Also, my vet said from the initial visit this type of problem is dietary related. I'm noting the Kaytee customer service email address: customerservice@kaytee.com

Today, our 1 yr old guinea pig was diagnosed with kidney disease. We have been giving him kaytee timothy hay, which after reading this, we're going to remove from his cage immediately. He's alive and has some energy, but is deteriorating. If this hay is the reason, hopefully we've caught the problem soon enough.

I noticed that my rabbit's digestion has been messed up since about the time I switched him to Kaytee Timothy Complete. I had thought it was due to some other things going on (he's been sick and on and off antibiotics for nearly two years). I'm going back to his previous food in hopes that it was the TC. He'd been on Kaytee forti-diet previously for a while. I too noticed the food was a different color from his previous stuff and his poo has been paler and more powdery along with a dark, runny poo. He also no longer eats his cecal pellets. I thought Oxbow made him really thirsty but maybe I should have bought that. My poor little guy.

my ferret was bleeding for a few days rectally after taking her to the vet the vet asked what i was doing diffrent and told her i was feeding her a diffrent food . She told me to look up kaytee foods and to stop her eating this food at once as it would eventually cause her death. Why is this food still allowed to be purchased>>I am also very sorry for anyone who has lost a presious pet due to this jean

To smartass to anser your qustion it dosent matter if it has that in and i would recomend you change your dogs food to either Nature Diet or Burns www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk like i said before do not no nater diet but search in google. you are aiming for human grade food no chemical prevative additives coulrs animal by product and genrally cheap food you c the foods i recoment are not cheap but work out cheap in the long run eg no vet bills to pay you also feed less when feeding a higher qulity food. this is too anyone else who wants info too
