Frank Girardot: Add Bell to the list of four-letter obscenities

There are 23 comments on the Pasadena Star-News story from Jul 21, 2010, titled Frank Girardot: Add Bell to the list of four-letter obscenities. In it, Pasadena Star-News reports that:

Call Bell what it is. A place where the state Department of Education notes that 2,993 out of 3,115 high school students are "socioeconomically disadvantaged." A town the size of Beverly Hills, but a densely populated city where one out of five families ekes out an existence in neighborhoods that bear more resemblance to Tijuana than Hollywood.

Very well put, IF Bell had a newspaper such as this and a forum for readers this travesty would never have occurred but it appears there are many communities in the same boat; no newspapers! and the citizens don't care, can't read, glued to the T.V. soccer game drinking beer and beating their 'ol lady every night.
"socioeconomically disadvantaged." does that mean 'Stupid'?

Check out the mayor of Gardena Paul Tanaka and the fact he is an Assistant Sheriff of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department. It is rumoured that he will be the next Sheriff once Baca pulls the plug. Mayor + assistant sheriff. Conflict of interest??????????

I have lived in the City of Bell for 29yrs. I was fortunate enough to attend High School in Montebello. I was also very fortunate to attend UCLA and Graduate with a BA in Sociology in 2000. By no means has the city of Bell resembled Tijuana or will it ever. The city of Bell is by no means the ghetto. I am appalled at the recent turn of events. There are many successful, educated, and intelligent people that reside in Bell. Yes, there should be improvements to the education system and yes maybe there should be a daily newspaper. How is it the fault of the residents what the politicians and leaders in law enforcement have been able to get away with for years. Mr.Girardot have you ever been to the city of Bell? Your images are created from your false imagination. If you ever want the real story on Bell meet at the lovely Starbucks on Gage and Atlantic. Get your facts straight.......If the politicians would have taken a pay cut, the money would have improved the city. As a matter of fact Obama has provided us with Federal money to improve the streets, specifically Gage Ave.

Bell is close to the romantic city of Vernon where the ex-crook manager draws a $1/2 million a year PENSION, funded by CA tax payers- NOT the city. It affects YOU if you live in CA.
City of Industry- dispensed with pesky elections and appointed a mayor for LIFE (Dave Perez, aka the strip-club-king).
This all comes down to voter apathy- they keep re-electing the same people- you watch, not much will change in Bell. The Hisapnic politicians will remind the voters of their skin color in a nice brochure- and the voters will love it and re-elect them.

I thought the eight voters in Vernon (mostly cops on the payroll) kept the Malburgs in control, but that Perez crowd building a Stadium infrastructure with public money takes the cake.

I guess we should all be happy with the $ 400,000K the Whittier city manager takes in to work less than half time.

With oil money on the horizon in Whittier look for the Mayor and his handlers to make hundreds of millions. That will make Bell just a small obscenity, perhaps only a three letter obcenity, Bel.

What is the salary of the city manager in West Covina, or Whittier? Or that for the managers of any of the other charter cities, I hope we would not be surprised.

<quoted text>No it has nothing to do with the people being bad. Human beings follow migration patterns. The lowskilled good paying jobs have left and only lowskilled low paying jobs remain locally. Therefore your community is a reflection of the economic outlook in general. I bet good money it started in 1995 right. Well believe it or not thats when Nafta took effect.
Your right have no problem with any race I have a problem with the people running these small city there all crooks.

Corruption is prevalent in uneducated communities we find proof of this in large American cities during the industrial revolution. Many of these politicians welcomed immigrants with open arms especially illiterate and low educated. These are less likely to be civic minded ie., low political participation. Unfortunately only an increasing middle class consisting of a college educated base can guarantee your city council working properly. The solution includes not just in replacing the council but also in addressing the sociological problems and economic problems that led to a decay of your middle class which has been supplanted by low skilled low payed workers. Please don't engage in anti immigration rhetoric in your response as that is only a symptom of a much larger problem.
