Coyote sightings on the rise

Full story: Long Beach Press-Telegram

The name coyote comes from the Aztec word coyotl. Adult coyotes measure 23-25 inches high at the shoulder and are 3.4 to 4.3 feet long.

I'm more than a little tired of hearing that, "it's their habit that we are infringing upon".

That hasn't been true for AT LEAST 3/4 of a century.

It USED to be their habit. It belongs to us, our children and our pets now. That ship sailed a long, long time ago.

A wild animal that threatens me, my kids or my pet is guilty of committing a capital offense. I am unsympathetic to its plight after that.

I was awake at 4:30 a.m.and heard a noise outside Monday night. I went outside to check on my cat and was more than surprised to see a pack of 3 coyotes running down my lakewood street. What was
surprising was that Lakewood has not been alerting residents that coyotes may indeed be on the rise: my family has owned our Carson Park (Palos Verdes at Harvey)home for 55 years and this is the first I've heard of coyote problems on
my street! Your list of sugestions is good: I walk in my neighborhood on a daily basis and see
a lot of room for improvement in the area of trash disposal. Coyotes who are getting more bold
are a public safety problem and seeing 3 outside my house was scary.(I had a friend whose little dog as ripped off its leash as it was being walked
right outside its condo in Oceanside and if they
are getting increasingly aggresive it is necessary
for residents to be informed and protected!) I told one of my neighbors about my sighting right
after she had been reading a letter to the editor
in your paper regarding coyotes by San Martin park
who also said there needed to be coyote warnings!

I have no fear. I ride my bike down the SG River at night and they run away from me fast. They are scared of humans.(they know we cannot be trusted) But when it comes to small pets and small kids well all I can say is Darwin is at work so be smarter than the coyote. If not well they they're gonna get you!

Quite frankly you should be much more up in arms about domestic killers like pit bulls and LB gang members...get real

I live in Signal Hill near Sunnyside Cemetary, the past year and half I could hear on different nights coyote yelping as they do when they catch a pray. Tonight at 11 pm I open my front door to see a coyote crusing down my street in the street. I live off Willow between California and Atlantic. It is not me I am worried about, it is my little dogs in my yard when I let them out to pee. Coytote can can easily jump 6-9ft fence. Mine is a 4 ft. picket. Coyotes can go after babies, cats peoples pets, not bikes with big people on them. jeez

Coyotes deserve to live and roam. Just keep your pets supervised or indoors.

Its a jungle out there. Just think of Coyotes as "small animal terrorists" and then you will act accordingly...lol

As you destroy their normal habitat, they will do whatever is required to assure their continued survival. Thank goodness that the reign of the Human is close to completion. Humans are the ONLY species that serve no favorable purpose to the planet. It was an interesting experiment!

To my surprise and amazement, on September 6, 2010 at 10PM while walking my guest to their car, we saw a full-size coyote walking on the sidewalk coming towards our direction. I live on Eddington Drive in Carson, CA. After we shouted, the coyote crossed to the opposite side of the street, walk a few feet further, then crossed onto middle of the street going south on Eddington Drive. The coyote was about 3 feet high, 3 to 4 feet long, grey with white pointed ears. It was headed in the direction of the Del Amo Park, as well as the revine that runs through Carson. I called Animal Control and they said to call the dept. of Argriculture. (I didn't); tried to report it to the Carson Sheriff's dept, but the wait was too long. Told some of my neigbors, and they thought I may have seen a dog. I advised them to be aware and to be careful.

Calling the Sheriff? oh thats funny. Hell in Lakewood they would not show up in a timely fashion even if the coyote killed you. But really folks. Coyotes fear people a lot. Leave them alone. They are cleaning up all the stray cats for us. Good job coyotes! When the food goes away they move on.

We live in Lakewood a block away from you. Me and my wife see them often. usually early in the morning around 4am when we're leaving for work. I've never seen more than one. Yes they will eat your cats and little dogs if they catch them.

City coyote's don't yelp after a kill. They are a little smarter then that. Alot of people think they hear coyote's but unless it sounds like a baby crying, it's usually a domestic. People make that mistake alot. I grew up listening to them in arizona. when they are close to homes they travel very silently. I'm not saying they are not neer your house they probaly are. They usually travel by alone or with one more. They are smart. They use one as a diversion while the other makes the kill if their in pairs

well I dont know about us being in their habitat for I never before saw one until my dog was attacked earlier this month and Ive lived in Carson all my 22 years. And my family and neighbors were just as shocked. Others might say oh be smart about it but when I went to let my dog out to pee that night I didnt expect a coyote to come from the top of our fence (8ft). The only thing that stopped it from killing my dog was when i threw my flashlight when i heard my dog scream and I saw it as it was running away and jump the fence. All in a matter of 10 mins. I called the dept of agriculture no answers and the other number animal control gave me wanted me basically to pay them 250 dollars to come when i had to already pay the vet 1000 dollars. So those of you may think oh its common sense but when youve never seen them till now how are you suppose to know. please be more considerate....

I noticed this too. I am in signal hill and last week saw 2 coyotes come out of the bushes sniffing for my dog since we just came from that area. I think there are less wild animals for them to eat now so they are searching in neighborhoods. They kind of look like skinny grey dogs and are easily frightened off. It was kind of cool seeing them actually but I used chicken wire to fence off the trail they took since it was 3 times that they came out that way.

I stay on coltman in carson and my dogg was attackted last night by a coyote, my mom woke up and ran upstairs and tried to wake me up but i was sleeping to hard, she got it to leave by beating on the window and turning on the light, i had no idea that there were sitings in carson this year, or that coyotes could even jump that high. my girlfriend told me that she had seen a pack of 3 coyotes like a month ago when getting on the fw after leaving my house one day, but i thought she was jus talkin crazy, and when my mom was trynna wake me up, i thought she was trippin also, but after googling it and seeing this page, i know its real, more than likely its the same pack that is bein seen bekuz the sittings are not often, she is very hurt and breathing hard at times with swelling under her neck, i plan to take my dog to get treated tomorrow but if its like 1000.....we will probably jus put her to sleep, its sad bekuz now i want to KILL a coyote anyone around here who i tell will think im craz...... i feel bad that my dog got attacked and we might have to kill her, bekuz thats like me getting robbed and shot and then have to go spend life in prison afterwards..... its pretty messed up

To Eric Im sorry to dog about your dog. I hope they made it okay. since it was late I rushed her to an emergency vet in lynwood. but thats about the cost of any vet when they have to xrays and antibotics.its soo expensive.
