It seems our mayor has a bit of acoountability problem. He still does not take any responsibility for his role in the failure of the annexation. What has really occurred is some serious challenges in his abiltiy to lead the City of Huntington? Backroom deals, communication breakdowns, and disrespectful behavior was never a characteristic of Huntington's proud and successful politicians of yester years.

Speaking as a guy that lives in Fort Wayne, Huntington's mayor looked like a giant douche on tv. Yelling and carrying on like nobodys business. It also appears that the people opposed to it were pretty much closed minded complainers. Good for all parties involved that it came to an unsuccessful end.

This community is in trouble.

Let the citizens speak for hours, share their concerns, and then the politicians will still find a way to design their very own Harrison Square debacle.

Why was the Mayor even at the Council Meeting - he's the executive branch of government. He should have waited to see what the council would do (pass or no pass), then either approved or vetoed the council's decision (which should have only taken place after public comments and a vote).

Someone needs to have a government refresher course in my opinion.

For once JUSTICE has been done! I hope that this teaches Updike a valuable lesson! He put his wants and needs before the good people of Huntington! Now if we can have the tax situation overturned that the Mayor's wife passed we will be doing great! The Republican council of Huntington should have brought it to the people for a vote! The average property tax from what I understand will be 400.00 more a year! Some people cannot afford to pay this much personal property tax! The republicans have always blamed the Democrats for raising taxes but here is the real proof! Huntington needs a fresh change!

Hey jimbob...take that refresher course yourself...Huntington is a 3rd class city where the Mayor presides over the council meetings.

The LOIT was a much bigger travesty than the annexation. The annexation probably makes some sense but needed to be "sold" to those citizens as to how they would benefit other than free garbage pickup. The LOIT effects everyone county wide and was put into place because the "shortfalls" were based upon being able to increase each department levy a full 4% from 2008. Pucker up Huntington because without changes in spending mentality, your property taxes will return to previous levels next year until the 1% circuit breaker kicks in starting 2010. By then I'm sure the Council will increase the LOIT to the full 1.25% vs. the 0.35% "kiss" you get starting Oct 1.

I agree with you .
This town is about as corrupt as Chicago , when Al Capone was alive . He just has a different name nowadays and this guy's got a wife that helps him on the Council as well .

Count your lucky stars! My area of Fort Wayne was annexed 2 years ago and i have YET to see a city vehicle in my neighborhood...never....ever. Not even a street cleaner (and what is snow removal??). And the best {sarcasm} part is.. my taxes went up 57% as well as the cost of trash pick-up, even though I'm still with the SAME company that picked it up before!
