To add insult to injury, Arco charges $.45 to use their machines. Did that get refunded?

I just Googled "ATM skimming" and found that the same thing has happened in about a dozen cities across the country in recent days. There's some useful information in the a couple of the articles.

This site has pictures of the ATM with and without the device. It helps to know what to look for. http://denver.yourhub.com/Westminster/Stories...

And this article has some really good tips for anyone who uses a debit card. http://denver.yourhub.com/Westminster/Stories...

It looks like the Police and FBI have their work cut out for them in order to track down the manufacturers who make the device (as well as the equipment that creates the phony debit cards) and go after the website operators who sell the equipment to the criminals.

ARCO store owners can't be fooled by these guys if they understand their technology well and check the atms regularly since these guys had to be able to place their devices over the card reader slots in order to get the information. That means the store owners didn't check the ATM's and did not notice the device having been placed over the slots.

The worse is yet to come if my experience is any indication.

I suspected the same thing: the attendant was copying card numbers and making false charges then pocketing the cash each day.

Several years ago a $40 gas charge showed up on my card from Mobil. I could easily prove I was in San Diego the day before, the day of and the day after the charge.

I complained to Mobil. Four phone calls and three letters.
All they did was repeatedly just send me statements with the $40 amount and then started adding fees and late charges when I refused to pay. Finally they sent it to a collection agency which repeatedly sold it off to other collection agencies because I wouldn't pay.

After five years it is finally gone off my credit report.

Good luck.

Yup just another illegal immigrant taking advantage of the hard working folks in the much too lenient good ole US of A. It's so easy for illegals to become criminals here... because they just get a slap on the hand and they get deported.

I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago but by an employee at Dominos on Torrance Blvd. The employee was very nervous, swiped my bank card a few times and said the machine wasn't working so he had to use the machine in the back. I suspected he was up to something but could not stop him since he was behind the counter. Next day, all kinds of charges were showing up on my account. Went to the bank the next day to warn them but he was already charging away.

But using cash required one to walk maybe 20 feet then speak to an actual person and nobody likes to talk to actual people when buying things anymore.

Personally, I use cash to allow me to interact with my fellow semi-humans. It's also an excuse to buy a lotto ticket.

I honestly believe people like this should be given the death penalty as a deterent to others who are as "enterprising".

Call me crazy but think about the thousands of law enforcement, bank and consumer hours these people have wasted.

Death penalty. Or I'd love to see one irate theft victim catch one of these guys and put a slug in his brain. We should be so lucky.
