Swim club says safety prompted decision

Full story: The Morning Call

Second camp leader, also turned away from pool, says she rejects racism claim. July 11, 2009 -- The head of a private swim club on Friday defended its cancellation of the memberships of dozens of minority children, saying safety, not racism, was the reason.

If you own a pizza shop and some black and hispanic people come in for pizza, and one or two of your other customers make a racist comment, does that make you, the owner of the pizza shop, a racist????? I don't think so. Any time a minority doesn't like the situation they cry racism, its getting so old. I would like to see any public pool, on any given day, with their normal guests, have to all of a sudden at one time accommodate 65 kids from a day care. Yes the owner made a mistake to want to help this kids out, but it was a mistake made out of kindness, not racism. The day care/camp only had around 6 adults from my recollection. I thought there should be 1 adult for every 6 kids, I thought that was the law, maybe I am mistaken. If it is the law, the day care was short on adult supervision. Right there is a safety issue. There were only 4 life guards on duty at the time. I think things turned chaotic really quick and the pool was not prepared to handle the situation. Not racism, just an under-estimation of the situation. If there was a private club with only black people, and 65 white kids came and crashed the party, do you think not one black person would make a comment like "cracker" or "white bread". Give me a break with your racist sheet already!

65 kids who can't swim and are only permitted in about 1/3 of a public pool (meaning there are people other than those 65 kids too) doesn't sound like a safe or fun situation to me. I certainly wouldn't want to be a 16 year old life guard responsible for all those kids. It's possible the owner of the pool originally agreed to this because he assumed that more kids could swim. This isn't rasicm, it's common sense. Why would they even want to swim in that type of situation. I'm sure they will sue and put this poor man out of business. I hear they already have a lawyer.

This story will die because the pool club is supported by people who voted for, and who donated money to, Obama.

If this is a Jewish or Quaker club, the story will die even faster. Belive me, Joe knows!

Funny how the story keeps shifting, now it's a "safety issue." I'd have a lot more respect for these idiots at the white club if they'd just fess up for once and admit they don't want different people there. I'm just tired of hearing and seeing the knots they tie themselves into trying to avoid being seen for what they are. I wish people could have heard the cnn interview with the little kid who was in tears over this. I felt so sad for him and all the other kids who have to endure crap like that. Where did our feelings of empathy go?

"Meanwhile, the director of another camp that also had its membership canceled said she believes the club's explanation that numbers, not ethnicity, was the reason.

''It was definitely an overcrowding issue,'' said Joanne Rosenthal of Storybook Children's Center of northeast Philadelphia.''It was obviously more than they were used to dealing with.''

Rosenthal said at least half of her 25-member group was made up of racial minorities, and their money was also returned after one visit. But she said she thought the group had been treated ''extremely fairly.''"

Where did our feelings on common sense go Patty???? Not everything is black and white as you seem to think. The story does not keep shifting, but the reporting of the story has been made more clear. The day care/camp wanted to make it seem like it was all about race, not so. Now that the club has been able to give its side of the story more facts are coming out. People like you should NEVER be permitted on a jury, one side is the only side in your mind.

I wonder what would happen if all the white people at Dorney Park would get out of the wave pool and just cross there arms in protest? They would probably be called racists & asked to leave the park. Its always a double standard when it comes to racism. I have nieghbors who are black & nieghbors that are latino. Both good hard working people. Its ashame some can give all a bad reputation.

If I was a member of a private club and one day, weeks into the season, a bus load of 65 kids jumped into the pool where my child was swimming, and made it unsafe for my child due to overcrowding, unruliness, whatever, I think that I would protest too. Just because people got out of the pool and crossed their arms, doesn't necessarily mean they were like "hey you black kids, we don't like you and get out of our club". Maybe they were looking at the life guards like WTF dude, this isn't safe. Maybe they were upset with the management of the club. Maybe they were like "where are all the adults that should be supervising these kids"? So, if I get of a pool and cross my arms in disgust over the un safeness of the situation, I will be labeled a racist? Whatever stone face. I hate to bring it to everyone's attention but white people are now the minority and are being discriminated against everyday. Look what happened with the "white" fire fighters and their promotions. White fire fighters lost their promotions due to the color of their skin. Sonia Sotomeyer sided against the white fire fighters. Sotomeyer is a racist, but because she is not white, no problem. You are right when you say "Its always a double standard when it comes to racism".

Here is why you are wrong....the owner of the daycare stated that the swim club returned her check without any explanation...no note, no phone call...no nothing. If the true reason the check was returned was a simple overcrowding issue or a safety issue, the club certainly would have included a note of explanation with their apologies.
Since only the check was returned, I think that speaks volumes about the club's motivations. Club management is either incredibly and utterly incompetent without the most basic of commonsense or they are so incredibly arrogant that they felt they didn't need to explain.
Quite frankly, this whole situation and how it was handled smacks of pure racism. I bet you the lawyers are lining up to persue this case.

The same thing happened to two other day cares see quotes from this article below. Why are these other day cares/camps not crying racism??

"Meanwhile, the director of another camp that also had its membership canceled said she believes the club's explanation that numbers, not ethnicity, was the reason.

To Raz and the other degenerates who responded like Raz. There is a problem when children have to be subject to remarks like "why are those black children here?" Those chldren are in daycamp, not jail. Or do some of you think the tears on the children's faces were fake? Things are bad enough in this country. Why the adults who run this country and who are suppose to be good examples so screwed up? What does this show the children of all races in this country? Hey pin head(s) wake up! This is not about racism against one group of people. Racism affects every race (group)in this country. These are children we're talking about regardless of their race. Every race of people in this country has an exclusive club or group. In the case of the swim club, the daycamps check was returned without explanation. The story changed more than once. If the shoe were on the other foot how inderstanding would you be?

I agree that children should not have to hear adults make comments like why are black kids, or white kids, or hispanic kids here, but that does not make the OWNER of the establishment a racist, just because customers/members say nasty things, or may be a racist, or just an idiot. How do we know for sure an explanation was not given? The other day camp/care that had black kids also had their check returned but said they were given an explanation of over crowding. Do you think the swim club has a problem with black children from one day care, but the black kids from the other day care are fine, and were treated fairly, as the day care reported? These black kids are OK, but those black kids are not, come on. Just because one idiot made a racist comment does not justify calling the whole club racists. As a white person I have experienced racism, the very first time as a 6 year old. I made a black friend at school and went to play at their house one day. We were outside and a black boy that also went to school with us said to me "what do you think your doing in OUR neighborhood". Your kind doesn't belong here. I didn't fully understand at that age, but I knew it made me feel lousy and I told my mom I would NEVER go to play in that neighborhood again. She explained just because one black person was a jerk didn't mean all black people acted that way. So your right when you say Racism affects every race (group)in this country. I still believe that the club could not handle the numbers and this was the reason (the ONLY reason) for canceling the membership. If one or two jerks made insensitive or racist comments that is on them, not the club. It would be like saying all black people are just like the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

It's a PRIVATE club people. Private property does NOT fall under civil rights laws. Look it up! They can allow or deny or revoke the active priveleges of anyone they want or whom they deem improper or not in the best interests of the club. Member or Lease'e it's all the same. You don't fit the membership qualifications you are asked to leave and they were given a refund in full. What's the problem here except for rabble rousers and outside agitators who desire to stir up trouble??

The story hasnt "shifted" at all. I heard the story when it broke, and saftey was the issue. As the owner of the swim club said..."we knew that there were minorities in these daycares, if we were racist, we wouldn't have taken their money." Duhhhhh Makes sense doesn't it?
