Knock it off. Matt Kempkes is a great guy who doesnt deserve this. He had never done anything to anyone.

As for Cumro he was the man. To bad thing didnt work out very well at Lincoln North Star.

How many Hooters-Tablerock-Stieniuar graduates have gone into coaching and have championship teams? And Kempkes is a nice young man.
is he coaching now

i really like cumro BUT like callahan in oakland, cumro walked into a system that gave him a championship. i will ask this, where is he coaching now and what is their record?

and does coaching high school teams to a championship somehow prove your worth in the profession of teaching? i can tell you are from falls city cause your priorities are screwed.
yeah

Matt Cumro was at FCSH, University of Texas, and North Star. Don't know where he is now. I believe he was an assistant coach for three boys state championship teams and has never got the FCSH girls to the title game. Yeah he was in a good situation but he was still a good coach.

Matt Mezger teaches at LSW and coaches at Lincoln Southeast. I believe he is the JV coach and is doing well. He's under a great head coach right now.

Russ Plager helped at UNL and is an assistant at North Star. Teaches at an elementary school in Lincoln.

Kelly Herrick is a teacher at Superior and there head volleyball coach. Their team is pretty good.

I believe HTRS has produced a few other teachers in the last few years that aren't coaching (Jessica and Kate McKim). I know they have a few that are close to being done.

I'd suggest Ron Storant winning BOTH the mile run and the two mile run in the 1973 Nebraska State Track Meet.

This of course was not a team accomplishment. No scapegoats or alibis. No false praise for coaching. No debate over officiating. And, probably before your time.

No offense, but the 94 season was pretty good with a 7-2 record, and the 93 and 95 seasons were ok with 4-5 record.

June your, the fll of 1974 season also ended 7-2, ranked 6th by the World Hearld and won the Southeast Border Conference in the last year of its existence.

IF a few individuals hadn't been f-ing around on Halloween night, it's conceivable we could have been Johnson-Brock the following night, making it........eh 8-1 with the only other loss being SE Consoldiated.

Four and five isn't worth the "ink" to type it.

I'll still stand by Storant making a clean sweep in distance running at the state meet. That said, he wasn't undefeated. DV's Phil Fritz, with his arm in a cast, beat Storant in both the Peru Invitational and the Concordia Invitational in Seward. Ronnie lacked a kick and Fritz knew how the play the game.

Ronnie also doesn't have the school record in the mile run. Last I knew, it belonged Jay Hagerman, class of 1967. My dad won the state class B (Central City) mile run in 1949. He didn't have his school record either.

Chuck Jaro's record (perhaps now broken) in the 100 yard dash was highly wind-aided, making it somewhat bogus.

To reiterate, with the exception of relays, track & field is an individual rather than team sport. The glory and blame have a single focal point.

Lastly, Phil Fritz's nephew came home from Iraq the wrong way. Unfortunate.

4-5, huh?
that was a long time ago

First, I voted for TRS over FCHS. I can't forget that night. There were thousands of people packed into one of the smallest fields in the state. FCHS thought they had it won and were chanting 88 (for the 88th victory). Then in overtime Dave Mezger came through with the interception. That place was electric that night. It did stink that a championship wasn't won that year, but they ended up ranked 2nd.
Speaking of Matt Cumro and Matt Mezger. I played with both of them and I'd probably give an edge to Mezger. Cumro was good, but I think he always had a better supporting cast with the Jasa's, Tyler Binder, Mike Hunzeker, Jake Robinson, Dave Mezger. That team should have won State that year in Bball but ended up runner up. Where as that 2000 team was only 5 guys. If I remember the championship game correctly they only substituted like one time.

Yeah but what about the bench players that came in and sparked the run in the East Butler game(I think it was the East Butler game). I agree that Matt Cumro had a better supporting cast but who's to say what would have happend if the 2000 semis hadnt happened the way they did. i am neither from Humboldt or TRS and i don't want to offend anyone so if i am way off course I appologise

Yes Barnett did get a dui in 2004. Who hasn't got one? If you haven't consider yourself lucky. Sealing thing? Where are you people coming up with these things? From what I know he is selling cars for Anderson's in Grand Island and doing very well. I just had to add my two cents because I don't think you guys know what you are talking about. I vote for the younger Jasa brother.

How about Jim Gilbert becoming the state's all team leading rusher with over 2800 yards rushing in the 1985 season.

Gottula at the 1992 State Track Meet. 38 pts / State Runner Up by one guy is by far the best individual performance.

Another tr-s athlete you have to keep in mind is todd binder. the kid just wouldn't give up, no matter the circumstances. 1000 yard rusher in football, averaged over 20 ppg in basketball (one of the most clutch players I have ever seen) and placed either 1st or 2nd in the mile and 2 mile at state track. If all HTRS athletes had his work ethic, we could have been state champs in almost any sport several years running. Stays involved by running the local FCA and coaching basketball, and he's one of the nicest guys you could ever meet
