HIGHER TAXES COMING FOR HUGO;
Hugo Oklahoma already has the highest tax rate of any state municipality. Towns with higher tax burdens tend to have higher unemployment, crime rate, alcohol abuse, drug problems, advanced teenage pregnancy with lower academic test scores. Hugo's tax rate currently consist of 10% CITY SALES tax, 5% state income, 28% federal, THAT'S 43%, before personal & PROPERTY TAX is figured in. This amounts to over 50% of income going out for taxes. Look at all the closed businesses, abandoned houses, burned out homes, this is what higher taxation leads to. Robbing local businesses and homeowners out of hard earned monies for community projects will never work. The state and federal programs in existence, will fund these projects if properly tapped by skillful people. When you tax everything a person has, your left with nothing. The person leaves this community. Look around at what you have in Hugo. Less is never more. This community is taxed out.

Who can vote on Sep. 10th? Will this be just for the citizens wthin the city limits?

If so we will see how smart the residents for the city are. we cannot afford a higher tax, all these taxes that are voted in for a limited period of time then when the time is up they are not taken away. So what if the school building is old, so are the tax payers, I say fix the leak before trying to re-plumb the system. We have some major leaks in the system and we need god stewards of the tax payer money.

Attention to all voters.... Hugo gets to vote on this, I hope all the voting citizens of the city are smart enough to realize that passing this will drive business else where, as the people cannot afford to have another tax increase. citizens of Hugo get your thinking cap on and vote this one down the tube again, to help save our struggling little town.

Everyone thats reading this topic needs to understand how passing of this bond will effect them. I am a Landlord with several rent houses. Yes it will effect my
bottom line. Anyone owning OR renting will pay more. I would have to increase rents. If you don't get out and vote this will pass. WHY. Because when folks fail to vote for whatever reason then about 350 voters make the decision that effect us all.

The type of person attracted to bureaucracy unfortunately is also the type to most likely be a democrat. This town has always been run by a democrat mentality. Run business out of town? Just tax the rest harder!

What are they doing with the tax money they receive now? The occasional road?

We need to get rid of the hundred year old mentality with which this town is run.

thanks to Old timer and eee for your in put, Hugo needs a lot of things but higher tax is not what they need. The city needs new business (s) that's a service where people will spend their money and thus generate tax for the city and then the city needs a lesson in how to spend money wisely.

American Home Builders Association estimates building cost of $85.00 a square foot ,
for the average USA home built in 2013.
"Reed Construction Data" The Average cost for New High School $144.72 a Square foot.
Hugo High School Classroom Wing building cost $225,00 a square foot.
The "HUGO WING" consist of only class rooms no Kitchen or dinning area.
The contractors also mentioned a "FLAT ROOF" for the "HUGO WING HIGH SCHOOL".
THE contractor also guarantees roof not to leak, 20 year warranty.
No monies are to be spent on the High School gym, where some ventilation is a must,
with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees regularly.
No funds will go to the existing High School building although parts of this Grand old fortress
are still to be used. The old flat roof needs repair from years of neglect. The last estimate in 2010 was $50,000 for repairing the roof. The 1970 add on area consisting of several classes,
dinning area, and gym will still remain in use for years to come with no funds available for
repair or up-keep. The Old high school building will be left in place, with no children
no repairs. With all the boarded up, burned out houses surrounding this area it takes little
imagination to see what will come to this Majestic Historical building.

Yes, the school is in the shape it's in due to neglect. Why should we not believe the same neglect will happen with the new building? I noticed too that all of the very recent descriptions fail to mention the "safe room". Are they once again trying to pull one over on us? Don' t trust them. Vote NO.

After this years tornado outbreak the talk quickly turned to Saferooms for schools. Channel 9 OKC reported that for new schools to add Saferooms the cost would be around 700k. If that holds true, it is a lot of $$$ for a poor community.

Really you can't sacrifice a few extra dollars per month to put our children into a new school... I graduated there In 2007 and trust me 6 years later its still a shithole and even worst now... Ppl if u can't give your community 2 to 10 dollars a month for the kids you are one pitiful person... How about not buying a carton of cigarettes that month or maybe not eating out one or two nights that month and bam!!!! Your community has a school that is considered nice... Good job Shane keep pushing ppl.. ppl like me has your complete support!!

I graduated from there a long time before that and guess what? It was in bad shape then too. What does that tell you? No matter what, the school board and the school administration will not take care of what we (the taxpayer) have to pay for.

The roof leaks for one reason and one reason only.... they won't fix it. If they CAN but WON'T fix what they have, what does that say about how well they'll take care of a new building?

In response to Disappointed. First of all I do not smoke never did, waste of money. Second, a few dollars a month to me adds up, according to the numbers presented to around $112 a month.
Thats more than " a few extra dollars". Why should i carry an increased tax burden above the average just because I own property? Please dont say cause you can afford it. In the 90's we were giving to 32 community clubs and school activities, by the mid 2005 we had to cut that community involvement to 12 because of increased insurance and taxes on property. The tax assessor can raise taxes at a rate of 5% a year if they wish and for this 2nd or 3rd poorest county in Ok they are working on it.
If you have children in school maybe you should pay the greater tax burden instead of me.

One only has to drive down 2nd and 3rd streets which are front and back of the
Hugo High School to realize this is not a safe environment for students.
Other properties of concern is the McEwing Learning center on Broadway which
belongs to Hugo City Schools. Maintaining existing buildings is a must for any school district.
Asking the tax payers for more monies, with no maintance on these buildings and others
for years ,is out of the question. This proposed increase in Property taxes is for years to come. Please give your opinions.

So the schools are in bad condition according to our standards, maybe you should look at the poverty of other countries caused by high taxation and thank God for what we stll have instead of try to drain the working public. Do a self exam of your own income and see if you are a tax payer. Tax payers dont wont another added burden.

From the information put out by the pro-Yes crowd, the new school will cost 5.4 million. There is currently 1.7 million in hand from the sales tax with another 4 million expected to be raised. If the bond is passed for 1.4 mil the school will borrow from the City against the 4 million expected to be received.

Ok, so why have a bond issue at all? Use the 1.7 they have and borrow against the 4 million. Why do they even need an increase in our property tax? 1.7 mil and 4 mil is 5.7 mil, more than than they say they need, all without a bond issue.

What am I missing? Surely they're not trying to pull a fast one on us, even if it looks like they are.

Vote NO.

No alot of us cannot afford a few extra dollars a month. Maybe if the city and county employees would drive their vehicles off duty, and if they would quit wasting money on a stupid Circus Museum, we might could have better schools. I know of two empty schools in Hugo now, why not split them up into those two schools. I mean Hugo wastes so much money it is pitiful look they have a sub station for the fire dept. that they never use, we have a seperate place now for the ambulance authority now and for what reason I don't understand, they air flight every one out now. And it is not just 2 to 10 dollars a month it is already 10 cents on the dollar every time you go to the store. If you and Shane want it so bad donate your own money every month and leave mine alone. If they would have kept up on the maintenance it would not have gotten that bad.
