Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

Highways in West Michigan are in rough shape right now, thanks to the winter weather pounding the area has gotten throughout the day.

If the authorities were aware of significant power behind this storm, why did they not shut down the roads ? We all have been living here long enough to know how bad it gets, especially in this area where this accident took place. I understand that people need to use common sense but I am also sure had the authorities shut down the roads , this and many more accidents would've been avoided and lives saved.

They have told people to stay home and stay off the roads but people just don't listen.

Is this a new accident? Or the one that is being reported at other channels as 35 vehicles, 12 semis and one death? Not much info here.

But I have an SUV.
I paid thirty thousand for my SUV and now they're selling it for 12k???
Anyway, I bought this so I could drive fast in the winter and not worry about snow and ice.
I don't see why people don't just get out of my way? I drive real fast, right up behind them so they know to get out of my way and some of them don't take the hint that I'm better than they are.
I paid for my right to not let the weather make me slow. If the roads might make an accident then the government should tell people that there might be trouble. Either get out of my way or things will get ugly.
I hope everyone is alright and they learn to buy bigger vehicles so they don't have to worry about snow and ice.

A lot of people are going to be out anyway, because if they don't go to work, they will lose their job and they need every cent to make ends meet. Businesses won't except snow day for excuses. AND if they do, you still lose time/money. Its a lose-lose situation for alot of people.

I mean better in a good way, you know because I have more money than they do. I didn't mean that in a disrespectful way to all you other drivers that can't afford to drive fast in the winter.

Sorry that it might have sounded bad.

Back in the 70's, Allegan County road crew decided to stop plowing 131 highway because they couldn't keep up with the blowing snow. They quickly found out that was a HUGE mistake. The snow was drifted across the highway as tall and deep as the overhead bridges from 100th st. to Wayland exits. The highway ended up being shut down for 4 days while they brought in special equipment to remove the snow on the roadway. It was like driving through a tunnel; I wish I had pictures of it. Nobody would believe it unless you drove through that area once it was opened. They soon planted trees along that area to prevent that from happening again or not as bad as back then; but blowing snow can pile up quickly.

The big problem is keeping people off the roads, and slowing down the ones who don't stay home. It's not only SUV's who think they can fly by everyone.

I have family driving in from Detroit right now. I've tried to get them to find a hotel and wait it out, but they want to see how far they can get. Please pray that they arrive safely!

I looked up idiot in the dictionary and saw your picture. What kind of stupid remarks are those anyway?
I drive an SUV at a reasonable speed in the snow and all the jerks in the small cars pass me.
That's why I carry a tow strap. Pull the little cars out of the ditch after they passed me and make some extra money.
Get a life.

Yes, it sure was like that! The highway sits low compared to the high embankment on both sides; so it was very easy for the blowing snow to just fill up the highway. That's why no matter how much it keeps blowing, the plow trucks need to keep up with it and not stop.

Looking at the roads on the news just now; I can't understand why so many vehicles are on the roads in the first place. I'm sure some truckers are trying to get home for the holidays.

Thanks for the memories with the pic!

I believe 4WDs' comments were meant to be tongue-in-cheek (as in sarcasm to make a point).

And by the way, I just HAD to risk life and limb and everyone else's life and limb to make it to that pre-Christmas sale...

NICE 4WD! I can only hope that if you ever need help on the highway, the "little cars" pass you by as they honk their horns!

An SUV is not going to help when you cant see when you have white out conditions.

I feel bad for people that are told to come to work or be written up today, like retailers. Retailers would rather make a profit than care about the safety of the employees.

Weird, I haven't heard one plow go by all day long on the main street. Our side street is so thick, wondering if I'll even be able to make it to the main street. Even that is worse than one would expect. I just think they arent doing the job they should, and yes, I factor in the weather and the amount of blowing and drifting snow today, but why no plowing? Everyone knows the government isn't as efficient as they once were. They need to do those budget cuts with providing service because they have co-workers they dont want to see lose their jobs because they run low on money. Because that might mean if their co-workers lose jobs, they might have a grievance and expose them for being an unnecessary worker as well. A snowball effect they dont want to see happen. Have them fill out log sheets and lets find out who's doing what and how often.

Thats so true that the main problem is way too many people driving around who simply dont have to but they insist that they do! They do not HAVE to no matter what stupid reason they give.
I didnt have anywhere to go today, I knew it was coming, I got anything that I wanted or needed yesterday when it was beautiful out and today I just stayed in an relaxed.

I just read about a civil suit being brought against a retail store in Concord, NH. This is one of the towns hit hardest by the major ice storm that went through new england on the 12th of December.

The retailer is being sued by 3 employees for being negligently put in danger by having to report to work or risk losing their jobs. Two of the employees were involved in accidents due to ice and one of the employees slipped in the parking lot and broke her arm.

Those 3 out of 5 employees were fired for not reporting to work.
