Today I was saddened to learn that a 69 year old woman was hit and killed by a truck as she crossed Central Ave. http://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/pol...
This intersection is notorious for accidents because it is a perfect storm of failure.
First, this intersection is extremely busy. There are a lot of cars and many drivers fly down Merrick Rd at high speed.
Second, we have a left turn arrow that doesn't last long enough. The left turn arrow to turn from Merrick Rd onto Central Ave lasts about 3 seconds, which is not enough. For this reason, people often turn as the arrow disappears and end up crashing into oncoming traffic or in this case, a person.
Third, we have pedestrian walk signs that don't appear unless the pedestrian presses the button on the pole. Many people don't realize this, so they end up standing there for several minutes with a 'do not walk' sign and they think the light is broken or they get tired of waiting and cross when they shouldn't. This disrupts the flow of traffic and leads to people being run over like the lady this morning.
I hope someone in the local government will see this message and look into improving the safety of this intersection. There have been more accidents in the last couple of years than I can count and this morning there was a death. The woman who got hit could have been anybody's mother or grandmother. This can happen to anyone and if left as is, it will happen again. Please fix this intersection now! Th

This intersction has been a "Hail Mary" play to cross for the last 50 years and has only gotten worse.
If you think it's bad now just wait until the Super Walgreens is built on that very corner.
I know for a fact that the Walgreens bid was shot down by the Inc. Village of Valley Stream because the intersection was dangerous about 15 years ago and seriously wonder how and why the new Walgreen variance was resently passed?

"Third, we have pedestrian walk signs that don't appear unless the pedestrian presses the button on the pole."

Who cares? Do you know that people get ran over or hit by cars because they look at the traffic lights instead of the pedestrian walk/don't walk lights?

I personally hit someone while I was at work, and I work for a big named company. It was pretty bad. EMS and NYPD came and took the women and her cousin to the hospital.

She sued my company and got a nice fat doughnut as a check because it was found she crossed the intersection while she had the ''don't walk'' and I had the green light.

She probably is going to be hurt for awhile, all because DIDNT LOOK.

I have no sympathy for Peds that don't look or "try to run" to make it, because the bottom line is, if I ran a red light, I would be crucified. So when when you run a red light, don't try and put the blame on someone else.

Jaywalkers and green light crossers are annoying but ultimately they have the right of way always because they can't kill you with their bodies while you CAN kill them with your car. I'm not condoning crossing at the wrong time, I'm just saying that the crosswalk light at that intersection doesn't work unless you press the button but if you don't know that, you will assume the light is broken and cross at the wrong time....I've seen it happen many times. Maybe she shouldn't have crossed when she did but the whole intersection is set up to fail. Every week there is some accident or an injured pedestrian at that intersection. Something's got to change soon!

On December 11, 2014 my twelve year old nephew Zachary Ranftle was struck and killed by a car walking to memorial junior high school on W Merrick rd and S Franklin ave in Valley Stream.

On December 3, 2014 14 year old Mohamed Tarek was struck and critically injured coming home from Elmont high school near Central ave and Salem rd. A non student related pedestrian Danalee Daley was struck and critically injured at the same intersection as Tarek.

I have started a petition to get valley stream schools and streets that can be a potential threat crossing gaurds. I would like to ask for everyones help. please read, sign, and share this petition with residents of Valley Stream NY and neighboring towns of Nassau County. Together we can make sure all children cross safely and get to and from school without harm. Every signature helps and counts. Every signature that leads to victory is also a signature that could be saving another child from injuries or death. Thanks again for all the kindness and support.
