Gore was not the only president candidate to lose an election by winning the popular vote but not the electoral vote. Grover Cleveland lost to Benjamin Harris in that manner. Thank God gore didn't win.

This is a ridiculous idea. The founders made this system on purpose to ensure that all states would have some input and some value to potential candidates. If you make this change, California, New York and a couple other states are all that would matter to candidates. Under the current system, candidates must relate to a variety of groups such as the south, the midwest, the southwest etc.... regions with different interests rather than just a couple of areas with huge populations. This was intended to prevent one major group from running over all minority groups. The electoral college is a great system in a republic that values everone's voice being heard.

Come on you people who disagree with TempNewMexican. Like it or not, the loser of the popular vote has been made president two times our history.

Consult any U.S. History textbook if you are in doubt about this!

There is much evidence to show that the electoral college was only proposed due to the lack of a method of counting every vote in the 18th century.

It's not as if the founding fathers proposed it as an ideal method of deciding a leader!

Also, it's only been the case in our history two times that the winner of the popular vote lost a presidential election...

Darn! How come I did not know that the Founding Fathers knew all about Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Mussolini and their election to office. I mean, I knew that the Founding Fathers were far-sighted, but I did not realize that they were seers who could look into the future. What I wonder is how they saw that these leaders were elected (since they were not).

I have said the popular vote should be the one that matters. However it should not be the nationwide popular vote, it should be the states. If you win the states popular vote, you get the states "Electoral" votes. That way the popular vote matters and but Cali and NY dont decide who is president. One thing that pissed me off during the last election was NM's votes. The WHOLE state was red except two little blue dots. Can you tell me where they were?

I see nothing wrong with the Electoral system. A two party system needs revamping. A viable third party needs to emerge. Then from all the candidates, the top two vote getters should runoff in each party. Thus, Three would be candidates for the Whitehouse. Out of those three, if no one gets 51% of the popular vote, then the top two runoff. Our Election process is to short and doesn't allow for all Citizens to vote, while the Campaigning drags and drags. The electoral system would take affect after two candidates emerge.

working on it. My advice:

Finish your high school first. Go to college, get a graduate degree and keep learning throughout life. Support public education, museums and libraries. Stay away from religious fanatics, anti-science hucksters and Fox News.

You can achieve - America is the land of opportunity for those that put in the effort.
