Shame on the Houghton Lake school board for not putting the well-being of our children first! That the school boards time is spent placing the leadership of HLCS on paid admistrative leave with no real reason or explanation to the parents/tax payers. Change is happening in America! It is very apparent in Wisconsin where the unions will not be making the decisions and is a sign of changing times. Kevin Murphy is not afraid to make changes, hold teachers and administrators accountable and put our children first. HLCS has had many fine teachers, but many of whom stayed to long. What if teachers & administrators reviews were published in the Resorter as Kevin Murphy's have been and then 2 months later they were put on leave with no explanation? If the school board can take the time to investigate Mr. Murphy, I am sure they can take the time to investigate principles & teachers that have had multiple comments or complaints made against them. Monday night should be very interesting. HLCS have had enough issues and problems over the last ten plus years. The school board may be surprised with “school of choice” and what parents are prepared to do if this problem is not resolved in the right manner. Is the school board prepared for the tsunami they have created and prepared to make the right decisions and put our kids first? Kevin Murphy is the right person to lead our school district, make the right changes and put our children first.

I'm very disappointed that HLCS has found it's way into the negative spotlight once again. It's disturbing to know that some people in our district seemingly only want us to appear in the negitive spotlight. I say that because the same day the suspension of Mr. Murphy was in the news, Houghton Lake Nation Junior Honor Society did something wonderful. They raised money through candy grams and selling Bobcat paws to purchase a Food Truck and feed this community. There was no mention of that anywhere in the news. We have a great community here with a number wonderful teachers and administrators. It is a shame that a few bad apples have to spoil the bunch.

There are elementary school children that are still afraid to use the bathroom at Collins because they were told that there were cameras put in there to keep an eye on them! Nothing was done about THAT! I find it hard to believe that Mr. Murphy has done anything to that extent to deserve suspension...and if he has, why don't we know what it is????!!!!!!
I agree. Mr Murphy has always appeared a polite, caring man. He has had to deal with the uncaring union and did so with due etiquette. You gave a good example of what goes on at Collins. The only thing that doesn't is good education!

When we moved to Houghton Lake, I was very leary enrolling my child at Collins due to the negative feedback I was getting about a few teachers at Collins and certain school leaders. I decided to enroll him and became an involved parent within the classroom. When Kevin and Mary Murphy were hired by the school board and the school year started I was immediately impressed with all the positive change that was occurring within the school because of them. I was happy with my decision. The Murphy's are very involved within the school and the community and I can't imagine what it would be like without them. I am REALLY interested to know WHY such a drastic decision was made to put him on an investigative leave. I hope the school board hears what the community as a whole has to say instead of a few people who were out to get him from the get go.

I fully support education and I am a former educator. However, I do not support teachers just because they have a number years (or perhaps too many years) under their belts. The educators who cannot except change in leadership need to realize that there are thousands of new and highly talented teachers in training that are hungry for a chance to make a positive difference in the lives of children.

What is going on behind closed doors in this investigation is an outrage and when we finally know what is going on I know Mr. Murphy will be just fine. However, he may not want anything to do with this school system of dinosaur teachers and administrators who cannot accept change and will fight tooth and nail to defend what they think is their school. Shame on them!

The education world is quickly changing its dynamics of what was once guaranteed job protection under MEA Union rights. We are again facing teachers who feel entitled not to teach but to RIDE out their years until a late retirement.
These teachers need to wake up to what is going on around us in various states in which collective bargaining rights are being changed for the better to offer a more fiscally balanced approach to education.

We are first and foremost concerned with the way the board has handled our superintendent. There are far more good teachers than bad in all of our buildings. Let's remember that! Mr. Murphy was doing a great job making sure it stayed that way. Stay focused and strong and the good will prevail. First things first people. Show up at the board meeting tomorrow and go from there.

On topic... you are on point!

We need to make this meeting tonight effective. It is not about issues with Pam, it is about our issues with the Board and their handling of Mr. Murphy. Come and support those efforts... once succesful with that, Pam's days are numbered. She has upset too many people too many times and a tiger can't change it's stripes!

We need to be rational, united and strong... too much emotion will hurt the case!

I agree, the big issue is the board in which Pam hides behind. They are supposed to help us not hurt us so it make sense to start with them...good point.

So what if Mr. Murphy did do something that needs discipline. Is this really the proper way to handle this situation? Is this the way other administrative complaints are handled? I think the BOE needs check the bylaws that are posted right online and start abiding by the law. I'm not sure they are really clear on their responsibilities, they have made that clear. Get Mr. Murphy back on the job and quite drawing negative attention to our schools BOE!

Let's start this meeting by saying that we're not going to tell you anything, then I think we should hire a negotiator to do our job, and wrap it up by hiring the Guy that retired awhile ago because he's the cheapest option other than the Guy we're already paying.

i thought that the BOE meeting tonight was nothing but a BIG ASS JOKE. I thought the meeting was to find out whats going on with Mr. Murphy and his place in the school district. Instead it was no new info from the broad on the matter, other then who they can find to replace him... i seen the problem was sitting there at the meeting tonight in the form of PAM AKIN. that is the person that needs to be fired. 7 different superintendent in 10 years what is up with that, no one whats to stand up to the problem and the ones that do get kicked out. i cant wait tell tomorrow when i can talk to my attorney in this matter... FYI PAM's rein like Saddam's is over!!!!!!!

"pops" I think that about sums it up. This was almost a waste of my time other then going to support Kevin Murphy. If my night would have gone better me and my husband were going to be there with picket signs. I think that the BOE is pussy footing around wasting tax payer dollars if it is "none criminal" then I think it should have been resolved by now...Like I said in the meeting, I had a meeting planed with Kevin Murphy that was canceled then I find out it's going to happen with out me and my husband and the biggest issue I had was with the administration at Collins and Mr. Murphy was willing to help out...what has the board done...NOTHING!!!! It's time to stand together as a community and clean house with the BOE and admin's but the only way to do so is to stand together get the word out and DO SOMETHING about it!! I'm not keeping my mouth shut no more...School is about children first and fore most...Not making sure you have the right friends in the business to save your butt when you do wrong....

I want to say that from day one at the start of the 2009-2010 school year I was mortified at Collins. We came from a school on the west side of the state. The principal, teachers, school staff and even bus drivers over there were wonderful!!! But situations bought us up to this area. When I went to sign my children up at Collins, the principal never came out to welcome us say hi meet the new children that were entering her school. She was right there in her office but never said a word. At the open house that year, I walked in the school and the principal was standing there with a few other staff talking with each other, I stood there for a few minutes not knowing that that was the principal waiting to ask where my daughter's class rooms were. They just kept on a talking so I ventured on my own. Hum I thought what great customer service skills these people have. I have bumped heads with the principal at collins more then once. also with bus drivers lunch aides, they seem to be bothered by the children more so then wanting to be there with them. Such a drastic change from the school my children were in the years before. I felt horrible as a parent sending my children there when they would come home with stories about this person yelling and having to whisper in the cafeteria. I made several phone calls to the super and he seemed concerned himself but being his fist year I think he didn't want to make to much out of it. I guess I had the fortune to witness what a great school is like. HLCS has that opportunity to be a great school system I feel they need to clean house. If you are a nobody or don't kiss up to the principal you don't receive her phone call to see what teacher you want for your child and your child doesn't get to witness her nice side. ALL THE CHILDREN should be treated the same. I know of a student that eats lunch with the principal at least once a week. In fact she has even bought this student happy meals from mc donalds just because...Does or did your child receive this privilege?? Maybe we should have her buy all the children Mc Donalds for lunch one day...yeah right...

Tonight the board had an open meeting to provide no additional information to the public about the allegations against the superintendent. Many questions were asked of this board (few that were answered). A vote was taken to hire a interim superintendent and it passed in a 5-2 vote (The vote to suspend was 7-0) Were some of the questions raised tonight a concern to two of the board members, and they were rethinking their original vote or were they just against the former superintendent coming back?

The board President told 9-10 news that it was just allegations that caused the superintendent to be suspended with pay and that it would be irresponsible for assumptions to be made about allegations. But didn't the board do just that when they suspended the superintendent over allegations?

I wonder where the investigation will lead if the "allegations" are found to be false? Will this President demand that the false accuser be made "public information"? I bet the public will demand it and I know I will.

I do believe that this Superintendent has the interest of our children in his heart. We all make mistakes, I'm just not convinced that he did in this case, and that any mistake that he might have made would call for his resignation or dismissal.

If we are all seeking the truth it will be found.

I think Mr Murphy should get an attorney to do his own investigation for him...at least investigate the boards investigation on him...and if the board is not saying anything on behalf of Kevin then why can't Kevin speak on his own behalf...there is a lot to think about...if he wants the public to know what happen he should have the right to don't you think. He has plenty of supporters out there and besides if he did do something "non criminal" there are plenty of others that work for the school that have dirtier hands then him!
