is spending a fortune on a new city hall.

Our leaders logic:

The situation. The police station is not adequate anymore and needs upgrading.

The Solution. We build a new city hall, and give the police the old city hall, that is not suited to a police station and will need alot of remodeling.

The effect. We cannot afford to build something as simple as a sidewalk on the street where the high school is located.

Unbelievable.

You do know that some of the people who complain most about sidewalk proposals are the people who actually live on the street and will have to loose parts of their yards to the right of way not just for the sidewalk, but also drainage? Typically the city listens to those folks first about their own neighborhood. Plus kids have walked through that way for decades now and vehicles are not fundamentally different. So if kids are in any additional danger now it is their fault for not paying attention or what passes for drivers these days who think eating, texting, etc are tasks you should do while driving a huge metal object.

I am aware that the property owner may object to sidewalks, but that is the purpose of a right of way.

It is interesting that you cite "kids have walked through that way for decades now" as a reason to not add a sidewalk and continue to have them share the street with cars and trucks. From your post one can only surmise that sidewalks anywhere are unnecessary and a waste of money.

The reason I cited the comment from the city as to the lack of funds for the sidewalk is due to the fact that our leaders find it necessary to spend millions upon millions of dollars for new offices for those same leaders instead of spending a few thousand for sidewalks for students walking to school in the street.

It will be interesting to see if the new city hall has a sidewalk or if the mayor will have to walk in the street just as those students have to.

bottom line is there is always money to fix streets and sidewalks in the ghetto but never any money for anything else that needs fixed!! same thing applies to the high and middle schools , one takes higher priority over the other. some of you all will say that isnt true, but you know as well as anyone else that it is. thank the lord my daughter only has 4 years of high school left til she goes to college away from hopkinsville. i have lived here all of my life and i have to say it is so sad how things are here anymore. there is nothing here for teens or young kids to do, and dont get me started on the neighborhoods because im beginning to wonder if there is such thing as a good one anymore!! and it seems like there are less jobs and more drugs and welfare... really, really sad!!

Just go out to NovaDell they have reallllll nice sidewalks-That the city maintains. Funny people who can afford a personal trainer and a gym membership get all the nice sidewalks to exercise on and people who cannot afford a gym membership or a trainer get no sidewalks. Funny.

I started this thread to draw attention to the fact that the city cites lack of funds for the reason to not build sidewalks on Kaufman Drive. A location where any other city would understand the need for sidewalks and step up.

I also want to point out the fact that the city is spending millions of dollars on a new city hall that is not needed.

It is a prime example of misplaced priorities and it is a shame that our leaders are so out of touch that they find it necessary to spend money on themselves rather on where it should be.

The sidewalks are just one small example.

The mayor has proposed his budget and it includes $1,250,000 for the walking trail, after it was announced that there was no funds available for sidewalks on Kaufman Drive.

It's too bad that our local leadership cannot see the wisdom in using a sidewalk as a walking trail.

This is just another example of misplaced priority in Hopkinsville and a major waste of money that we really don't have.

The walking trail = the water park.

A gigantic waste of money that very few even want.

There was nothing here for my generation either...Nothing changes in Hoptown....If you want your child or children to be involved and have something to do here, that would be sports, music, church, 4H..etc.
I agree there is NOTHING to do here......But, I live here and have adjusted to the lack of entertainment. The sad part is Hoptown won't change....Its difficult to backtrack to the 70's when the city had the chance to see this town grow...but Clarksville, TN was open minded and look how it has grown since the 70's!!
I don't want to bash the city I live in but there are times I get very annoyed~Your correct in the public assistance......Its a shame the ones that really need it get bypassed because others know how to buck the system.

My opinion is: What Kemp wants Kemp gets!!

I agree we do not need a new City Hall.....We needed a NEW POLICE Dept....

Go look at the neighnorhoods with sidewalks, I live in one myself. For some reason people don't know that they're supposed to use them to walk on! I'd say 95% of the "walkers" here in mine walk on the street and leave the sidewalk alone. I guess maybe they're afraid of wearing it out? Then they get mad if cars try to drive down the street and they have to move out of the way.
I agree that ALL neighborhoods should have sidewalks. But the nice people that decide to walk around in the neighborhoods need to use their heads and plant their feet on the sidewalks instead of out in the roadways!
