When the shelbyville plant negotiated their contract did they bargain neutrality for the rest of the martinrea facilities? if they did it would make access by the union a whole lot easier.

voting a union in is not always about money ! Sometimes it's about being treated like a human being. Companies always make threats to close down if a union is voted in , it's another scare tactic to use against employees. Not long ago unions we're regarded as ra thing of the past but with so emany companies doing this sort of thing the are making a resurgence. Corporate America is to blame for this you have to make a profit to stay in business too bad they can't think of any other way to be competitive than to cut benefits. I hope the union wins by a landslide!
I agree with the person against the union. I just recently started working for a company with a union and it is not all that it is said to be!!!!!! I personally feel like I am paying dues for NOTHING!!!!!

Lots of young people feel like that, they want that extra cash to waste on things like new video games and junk food. But when you are getting close to retirement and see a nice pension, enjoyed years of quality time with your family thanks to vacation, and made a lifetime of a living wage that allowed you to save money to live your elder years out in comfort, you will be glad you had that union there!

You pay for that little bit of retirement with your dues every month...you would certainly come way out ahead if you just bank the dues! And what if you do not work there that long it is just gone! And get real every factory has vacation time...your going to have to sweeten it up more than that...they may be young but not stupid !

Jane is an HR drone from a local factory here. She doesn't even have a proper degree to do her job. So it would be best to not listen to her advice. She will find out how much her corporate loyalty will pay off when they ditch her for a younger and nicer looking useful idiot in a few years.

does your work place have an overtime pay scale?

does you workplace offer health insurance?

does your workplace normally have a 40 hour workweek?

does your workplace offer paid vacation time?

does your workplace offer breaks during the shift?

It does? Congratulations. You have benefitted from Unions, whether your shop is represented or not. Would you like to keep and perhaps expand some of these benefits? Beast support Organized Labor. It is unlikely that the companies and political organizations who oppose workers having a real voice and are working so very hard to dismantle unions will continue to provide these things if unions die out. Just sayin'.

Can not believe anyone would believe that you have to PAY a union every month to get breaks something that in required by law...do not know of any factory in town that does not offer health care...some better than others even tho they do not have a union...every place has a 40 hour week...maybe more some people like overtime...guess you are lazy person and do not want it....and every factory gives you breaks something else that is required by law...so I guess that you like thinking that you have to pay union dues to get this when you do not have too....sounds like you are the one who is really stupid!

As usual you miss the point Janie. The only reason any company offers anything other than slave wages, unsafe working conditions and the opportunity to grow old and die with the last word heard on earth is the boss hollering "next". Is that working men and women stood up and formed Labor Unions. They demanded the boss provide a living wage, time to rest and recuperate from their labor, a workplace with adequate lighting, and safety procedures and machinery guides to reduce maiming accidents. None of these things would exist if not for Labor Unions negotiating from positions of relative strength to implement changes in the workplace and through collective voting power in elections, get these same improvements made law to apply to all workplaces, organized or not. The ratification bonus negotiated in the most recent contract at the plant. I'm employed paid for my union dues for the entire length of the contract with money left over. Belonging to the union has yet to cost me a dime, actually; the company pays for it. So, next time you go on your break, or use your health insurance, thanks a union brother or sister, somewhere. They worked and fought and even died to get those things for you.

Sorry you have not even came close to making me believe that a union in a Hopkinsville factory pays off...maybe if you work at the post office or somewhere but not in a factory here...you need to go to GM or Ford for that. We have all that you brag about except union dues. We even have ac and heat and it is a factory here!! We even have "lights" ha...oh and we get profit sharing and it does not go for union dues..did I forget to mention that we do not pay those? Oh and when we go to break we do not have to bow down to a "brother or " sister" we just go! So you keep on paying your dues ...oh wait your company pays that for you out of your bonus! Sounds like your company may be just a little in cahoots wit your great "union"!!

Jane, why don't you disclose the truth that you are anti-union because you are paid to be?

These are the sort of people who want you to be concerned with dues while they make backroom deals with the city or county to keep part of your payroll taxes in their coffers as a form of extortion to keep them from moving! Yes, they don't ask to keep their own money. They want to keep a portion of the taxes you payout of your own check! So instead of your taxes going to the city or county government, the company keeps the money they are supposed to pay you! If the city was really concerned with an honest payroll tax break they would just let you keep the money yourself and use it in the local economy, but corporations have learned how easy this extortion works.

Jane won't admit it but she won't deny it either!
She keeps acting like she is getting something special for regular things like paid holidays that I get every year. I get them without having to wait 2 weeks before the holiday to find out if the boss thought he got sucked him off enough to think you finally deserve it too.
She is just jealous that she has to pinch every penny doing an "important" office job, while knowing that unionized employees doing "menial" work below her are bringing home so much more every week (assuming she even gets paid every week!)

Do not know where you get the idea that I work in a office..far from the truth! We do get paid for holidays and we do not have to worry about getting laid off before the holiday so the company does not have to pay us for the holiday like you probably do......that is probably why you are so filthy talking..sorry sometimes it sucks to be forced into a union! I am positive that we probably make as muck or more than you do without having a union thank God! I know that you are stuck in a union plant and there is not anything that you can do once they take over but I do not understand why you want to bash plants that are not union! You must be on the union board for your company and get the extra perks like trips and being off the floor a lot. I would be willing to bet that if you ask the working people on the floor that do not have that luxury they would speak different story about how great the union is for them! Wish that we could help you so that you would not be such an angry person but once you make the big mistake of believing the union people and voting them in you are just stuck with them! Does not take long to find out they just fed you a bunch of lies and you never see them again. You are just left paying dues every month when you could be banking that money every month..sorry you were that desperate to believe their lies...better luck next time!

Everything Jane says is a lie, yet she has the gall to call someone else a liar? She admits she has never worked at a union facility, yet makes outrageous claims about union places. Who says a union even has to be at a factory? The post office and UPS are union! There are several government and civilian military jobs that are union. Even nurses and teachers have unions in some places too. Why are you so obsessed with factories?
Hardly anyone has bashed any other jobs that are not union, if anything people have constantly told how good they have it under a union on here and YOU have done all the bashing, YOU have posted nothing but vitriol and anger, YOU have posted all the lies!
P.S. "banking that money every month"? Do you get a check only once a month? Maybe that means you don't even have a job....
(I know it's useless to ask you any questions, because you refuse to answer or just use it as a springboard for more lies. I just do it to let you dig a larger hole for yourself)

Janie makes the point for organizing in the workplace over and over. Every benefit she enjoys was won for her in other places through collective bargaining. Employers have to approximate similar wage structures and benefits in order to prevent their employee's from demanding a seat at the table and negotiating for themselves such things as monetary packages, rates of work, health and safety standards, work rules, disciplinary actions, etc. Additionally companies enjoy having employees "at will", meaning they can terminate employment at any time for any reason, or no reason at all. Janie is enjoying the benefit of other's efforts with no contribution in securing them. It is simply another form of welfare. She will continue to collect this welfare until such time as unions no longer set the standards and the power reverts from collective bargaining to the exclusive property of the employer. Then we'll all be at the mercy and whim of his generosity. I'll willingly continue to pay my dues of 2 hours straight time a month to ensure my collective bargaining agreement provisions and even to provide some small fraction of those provisions to Janie and other workers who choose to be "at will".
